The Number 8
Power, money and authority, and the right use of all three. The 8 is the number that walks out into the world and makes things happen.
The nature of 8
After the quiet inward search of the 7, the 8 turns around and faces the world. It is the number of achievement, business, leadership and material mastery.
Look at the shape of it. Two circles, one sitting on top of the other. That doubleness is the key to the 8: rise and fall, gain and loss, the fortune made and the fortune lost. Complete reversals are always possible with this number, and the 8 is not lucky with money the way the 3, the 6 and the 9 can be. It has to earn what it gets.
The principle underneath the 8 is the oldest one there is. You reap what you sow. The 8 lives closer to the law of karma than any other number and is asked to handle money and power without creating new debts.
As a Personality number, the face you show the world, the 8 reads as presence. You walk in and the room notices. As a Soul Urge, what you want underneath it all, it is a hunger to build something big and the practical sense to get it done.
Strengths
The 8 can size up any situation and see both the large plan and the small details that will make or break it. It is an excellent judge of character and has a gift for spotting what a person could become. If you want to see the true colours of an 8, give it an emergency. It will take charge and have the thing under control before anyone else has found their keys.
Challenges
The 8 meets its lesson from one of two directions, and I see both in readings.
The first is too much 8. Self worth gets tangled up with money, position and control. The 8 works without stopping and measures everyone by what they have achieved. Underneath the drive there is often a quiet voice saying it is not good enough and will not get there in time.
The second is too little 8. The person undercharges, gives away what they should be paid for, and shrinks from responsibility they could carry well. Some of these 8s tell me, laughing, that they cannot even hold down a job.
Both are the same lesson. As a Challenge number, the hurdle you are asked to clear in a given chapter of life, the 8 asks for a relationship with money and power that is neither grasping nor afraid.
The reverse side
Every number has a reverse side, the same energy turned around.
The Challenges section above already shows the 8 from both ends, and this is the same idea laid out as a scale.
The 8 is one energy, and that energy is power in the material world.
- Lived well, the 8 sizes up any situation and sees both the large plan and the small details that will make or break it. It is an excellent judge of character, it spots what a person could become, and in an emergency it has the thing under control before anyone else has found their keys.
- Overused, self worth gets tangled up with money, position and control. The 8 works without stopping and measures everyone by what they have achieved. Underneath the drive is a quiet voice saying it is not good enough and will not get there in time.
- Underused, the 8 shrinks. It undercharges, gives away what it should be paid for, and backs away from responsibility it could carry well.
Both ends are the same lesson.
A relationship with money and power that is neither grasping nor afraid.
The grasping 8 needs to know it is enough already, and the shrinking 8 needs to send the invoice.

As a Life Path
An 8 Life Path walks the road of power and material mastery. Emma, born 6 August 1992, is one: the day gives 6, August gives 8, and 1992 adds to 21, then 3. Six plus 8 plus 3 is 17, and 1 plus 7 is 8. The Life Path post in the daily posts shows you how to find your own.
Most 8s are self made, and much of their early energy goes into building security and the symbols that prove it. The mastery comes later, once the 8 understands that the power was never really its own. It flows through. When the ego forgets that, the reversals arrive. When the 8 remembers, it builds things that last.
As a Destiny
Your Destiny number comes from the full name you were given at birth, and it describes what you are here to do and express in this life. With an 8, money and power will be a theme in your life one way or the other.
The remedy is permission. Give yourself permission to be capable and to do well, without shame. If money is a struggle, start with your boundaries, because the 8's power begins with knowing where you end and others begin. Then give generously, because the 8 that gives is the 8 that keeps.
An 8 Pinnacle, one of the four long chapters of life, carries the same flavour: a season for business, responsibility and recognition earned through steady, repeated effort.
In a Personal Year
A Personal Year 8 is harvest time. What you planted in the years from 1 to 7 comes due, and that works in both directions. It is a strong year to ask for what you are worth, step into authority and face the money paperwork you have been avoiding. The Personal Year post in the daily posts shows you how to find yours.
Across the traditions
In tarot the 8 is Strength, card VIII of the Major Arcana in the Rider Waite Smith deck, a woman gently closing the jaws of a lion. Power held without force is the whole lesson of the 8. (Older decks swap Strength and Justice, so you may see it numbered XI elsewhere.) The four Eights of the Minor Arcana show the 8 at work, from the craftsman at his bench in the Eight of Pentacles to the walk away from what no longer fills you in the Eight of Cups. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you straight to them.
Where are you holding power in your life, and are you holding it the way she holds the lion?
