Eight of Cups tarot card, Rider Waite Smith deck

Walking away from what no longer fills you.

The picture

Eight cups are stacked in two rows, five below and three above, with a gap in the top row where another cup could go. A figure in a red cloak, leaning on a staff, walks away from them along a rocky path towards the mountains. Water lies between the cups and the hills. In the sky, a moon with a face looks down, a crescent and a full moon drawn together.

Upright

Eight is effort, movement and mastery. In Cups, the mastery is emotional: knowing when something is finished for you, and having the courage to go.

Look at the cups. Nothing is broken. Nothing is spilled. They are stacked neatly, and from the outside everything looks fine. The gap in the top row is the only sign that something is missing. The figure has noticed it, and is leaving anyway.

This is the card of walking away from a job, a relationship, a home or a way of living that once filled you and no longer does. It is often quiet. No slammed door. Just the slow understanding that you have outgrown this, and that more of the same will not fill the gap.

The moon says this often happens at night, in the part of you that knows before the rest of you catches up. The staff says it will be a long walk, and that you will need support on the way.

Reversed

Reversed, I read this card as blocked, or as delayed.

Blocked is knowing you need to go and not going. Fear, guilt, habit, or the voice that says it is not so bad really. The cloak is on and the feet will not move.

Delayed is the leaving that is coming, and is not due yet. There may be one more thing to finish, one more conversation, one more season to see through.

To tell which, ask what is holding you. If it is fear of the unknown, it is blocked, and the devil you know is doing the talking. If it is something left undone that matters, it is delayed, and you will know when the time comes.

When it turns up

What in your life looks fine from the outside, and what is the gap only you can see?
