The nature of 3

The 3 is the number of bringing into being something that has never existed before. It has a beginning, a middle and an end, which is why the old Pythagoreans saw it as complete, and why fairy tales are so fond of three wishes, three riddles and three doors. In a name it comes from the letters C, L and U, which together spell LUC. Fitting, for the luckiest of the numbers. Its astrological partner is Leo.

The 3 is forever young. Its energy bubbles over, and for the 3 the time is always now. Tomorrow is a long way off. It belongs to the family of 3, 6 and 9, the artistic and inspired numbers, and it is the most emotional of the three. It is brilliant at dreaming up ideas, and it usually needs other numbers to give those ideas a solid shape.

Strengths

Humour, optimism, enthusiasm and a way with words that paints pictures in the listener's head. The 3 is warm, generous and wonderful company, and it has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time, so lucky that it can take luck for granted.

As a Soul Urge, the 3 is the life of the party without even trying, the one who can describe a person or an afternoon so vividly you feel you were there. As a Personality, people see someone charming, quick witted and socially at ease. A 3 Pinnacle is one of the easiest of the long chapters of a life, a time for creative work and enjoyment, and money often turns up to support it.

Challenges

The big one is scattering. There is so much to do and see and try that the 3 starts ten things and finishes none of them. It can have a sharp tongue, slide into gossip, exaggerate, and talk far too much when it is nervous. It can be moody, and criticism cuts it deeply. Underneath all that brightness there are often feelings the 3 would rather not look at, and keeping busy is a very good way of not looking.

A Challenge 3 shows up as trouble with your own voice. You make a joke when the moment asked for sincerity. You have talked about writing the book for years and not written a word of it. The work is to make the thing, finish it imperfectly, and stop believing the inner critic. That voice is only trying to keep you safe from being seen, and what it says about your work is rarely true.

The reverse side

Every number has a reverse side, the same energy turned around.
The 3 is one energy on a scale, and that energy is expression.

1. Lived well, the 3 is the best company in the room. Humour, optimism and a way with words that paints pictures in your head. It is warm and generous, and it turns up in the right place at the right time so often that people call it lucky.
2. Overused, the 3 scatters. Ten things started and none finished. It talks far too much when it is nervous, the tongue gets sharp, the stories grow in the telling and the gossip creeps in. All that busyness is a very good way of not looking at the feelings underneath.
3. Underused, the 3 loses its voice. The book has been talked about for years and not one word is written. The inner critic gets the final say, and the jokes come out exactly when the moment asked for something real.

The chatterbox and the silent 3 are the same energy, one spilling everywhere and one bottled up.
Both are asking you to say the true thing and make the actual thing.
Finish it imperfectly.
The 3 learns more from one finished piece than from ten brilliant beginnings.

Your Destiny number, from your full birth name, is read as what you must do. A 3 Destiny asks you to inspire and uplift people through your own creative expression. Many 3s have so many talents they cannot choose between them, and the answer is often to weave several together instead of giving all but one away.

The growth on this path is emotional truth, letting your work carry the whole of what you feel and not just the cheerful parts. When a 3 Destiny is squashed into a life of conformity, the world turns grey and mechanical, and that lovely gift for words can sour into sarcasm. The remedy is permission: permission to create, and to be fully yourself without waiting for anyone's approval.

In the tarot, the 3 belongs to The Empress, card 3 of the Major Arcana, the great creative force, seated in a garden in full growth. It also belongs to the four Threes: celebration in the Three of Cups, skilled work in the Three of Pentacles, and in the Three of Swords the heartache that lives underneath the sunshine.
