The nature of 9

The 9 closes the cycle. It holds the eight steps around the circle and the still point in the middle, which is why it is often called the number of wisdom attained. The 9 widens the view from the personal to the whole world. It is the humanitarian and the artist.

It is also an emotional number, and it runs to extremes.

The 9 is also said to attract money and fortune. Add up the letters of MONEY and you get 27, then 9. Add up FORTUNE and you get 36, then 9. Go figure. The catch is that a 9 can make a fortune and lose it more than once in a lifetime.

As a Soul Urge, what you want underneath it all, the 9 longs to make the world a kinder and more beautiful place, and it is upset by conflict. As a Personality number, the face you show, it comes across as confident and outspoken, and some people will take that as arrogance.

Strengths

The 9 is generous, warm and charming, and it sees what people are capable of becoming even when they cannot see it themselves. It is often gifted artistically.

Its great blessing is recovery. The 9 can lose everything and rise again, because it understands, eventually, that endings are where beginnings come from.

Challenges

Letting go is the hard one. The 9 holds on to relationships, grudges and old hurts long after they have stopped serving anyone. It is an idealist, so people who fail to live up to the picture can disappoint it badly, and a disappointed 9 can harden into cynicism.

Family is often tangled. Many 9s feel unloved by a parent, or completely responsible for one, and the father is frequently a strong influence for good or ill. The 9 also takes care of everyone else and forgets to say when it needs help, a hug, or a night off.

One practical note. In my method a Challenge number, the hurdle you are asked to clear in each chapter of life, is the difference between two single digits, and the biggest difference possible is 8. So you will never see a 9 Challenge in a chart I draw. The 9's lessons come to you through the other positions instead.

The reverse side

Every number has a reverse side, the same energy turned around.
The 9 is one energy on a scale, and that energy is completion, the big open heart that knows when something is finished.

  1. Lived well, the 9 is generous, warm and charming. It sees what people can become even when they cannot see it themselves, and it can lose everything and rise again, because it understands that endings are where beginnings come from.
  2. Overused, the big heart runs too hot. The 9 holds a picture of how people ought to be, and when they fail to live up to it the disappointment hardens into cynicism. It takes care of everyone else and forgets to say when it needs help, a hug or a night off.
  3. Underused, the 9 cannot let go. It holds on to relationships, grudges and old hurts long after they have stopped serving anyone. The ending is refused, so the beginning that should follow it never arrives.

Both ends block the same flow.
The overused 9 gives out without taking in, and the underused 9 takes in without ever letting go.
The middle is letting things finish, and letting yourself be looked after while they do.

As a Life Path

A 9 Life Path walks the road of the humanitarian, completion and letting go. You will find how to work out yours in the Life Path post in the daily posts.

This is a life of being finished with things. The 9 meets the full range of human experience so that it can come out the other side with compassion and tolerance. The key is forgiveness, of others and, harder still, of yourself.

As a Destiny

Your Destiny number comes from the full name you were given at birth, and it describes what you are here to do and express in this life. A 9 Destiny is called to love people wisely and actively, not to become the martyr.

People respond far better to a 9 who listens than to a 9 who preaches. Everyone assumes you have it all together, which makes asking for help hard. Ask anyway. For a 9, receiving is part of the healing.

A 9 Pinnacle, one of the four long chapters of life, brings art, philanthropy and the finishing of old business. Emma, born 6 August 1992, has a 9 as her second Pinnacle, which comes from the day plus the year. The day gives 6, 1992 adds to 21 and then 3, and 6 plus 3 is 9. Hers runs from age 29 to 37.

In a Personal Year

A Personal Year 9 is the year of endings and clearing out. Sarah, born 14 March 1987, is in one now. Her day of 14 reduces to 5, March is 3, and 2026 reduces to 1, so 5 plus 3 plus 1 gives 9. It runs from her birthday on 14 March 2026 until her next birthday.

Finish what is unfinished, let go of what has run its course, and clean out the cupboards, literal and otherwise. Save the brand new ventures for the 1 year coming, because anything started in the last months of a 9 tends to lack staying power. The Personal Year post in the daily posts shows you how to find yours.

Across the traditions

In tarot the 9 is The Hermit, card IX of the Major Arcana, an old man alone on a mountain top, holding up a lantern for those still climbing behind him. That is wisdom attained and then shared, which is the 9 at its best. The four Nines of the Minor Arcana sit one step short of the finish, from the wish fulfilled in the Nine of Cups to the three in the morning worry of the Nine of Swords. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you straight to them.

What are you still carrying that finished some time ago?
