The Number 22
The 4 with the voltage turned up. The 22 is the Master Builder, the one who takes a large vision and turns it into something real that outlasts the person who built it.
The nature of 22
The Master Numbers post in the daily posts introduces 11, 22 and 33. Keep one line from it: a Master Number is not a prize. It is voltage. Here I go further with the 22.
The 4 is the number of foundations, steady work and things done properly. The 4 builds the house. The 22 builds what the town runs on: the business that employs a hundred people, the school, the body of work that is still being read in fifty years.
Look at the shape of it. Two 2s, side by side. The 2 is the number of partnership and cooperation, so the 22 is cooperation doubled. Nobody builds at that scale alone, and the 22 who tries to will fail.
The early decades are usually frustrating. The 22 child has large ideas and none of the practical means to carry them out, and that gap can sit there well into the thirties. The building tends to happen from the late thirties through the fifties. The gift arrives late, after the lessons.
Strengths
A mature 22 can hold a vision steady for ten years and keep turning up to do the work. It understands how large systems really work. Its rarest quality is holding idealism and realism together: seeing what ought to exist, accepting what the world will actually allow, and building as close to the vision as the limits permit.
As a Soul Urge, what you want underneath it all, the 22 longs to have made a real and lasting difference. Sarah, born Sarah Jane Mitchell, carries one. The vowels of her name are A, A, A, E, I and E, which give 1, 1, 1, 5, 9 and 5, and those add to 22.
Challenges
The building can eat the builder. Workaholism is the 22's signature shadow, and grandiosity is close behind, the sense of being the only one who can build this thing.
The other shadow is the vision shrunk to fit. The person settles into a smaller, safer life, and the chart keeps offering the larger work.
So how do you tell whether someone is living the 22 or its root, the 4? A person living the 4 builds well for their own household and team. They are steady, reliable and thorough, and that is a fine way to live. A person living the 22 builds through other people, and the work reaches far beyond them. Ask two questions. Who benefits from what you are building? And could it carry on without you? Most 22s spend years as solid 4s first, and they need to, because the 4's discipline is the scaffolding the 22 stands on.
The reverse side
Every number has a reverse side, the same energy turned around.
The 22 is one energy on a scale, and that energy is building on a large scale.
- Lived well, the 22 holds a vision steady for ten years and keeps turning up to do the work. It understands how large systems really work, and it holds idealism and realism together, building as close to the vision as the limits allow.
- Overused, the building eats the builder. Workaholism sets in, and grandiosity follows, the sense of being the only one who can build this thing.
- Underused, the vision is shrunk to fit. The person settles into a smaller, safer life, and the chart keeps offering the larger work anyway.
With a Master number the reverse side often shows as its root lived anxiously.
For the 22 that root is the 4.
The 22 that has not found its footing tends to look like a worried 4: checking the plan again and again, tightening control, and building small so that nothing can fall down.
It is solid work, and it is the scaffolding the 22 will stand on later.
Ask the two questions from above.
Who benefits from what you are building, and could it carry on without you?

As a Life Path
A 22 Life Path is one of the most demanding and most productive roads in the system. The work is to grow vision and execution side by side, to learn to lead teams, to accept that the big projects take decades, and to choose projects worth the years they will cost.
As a Destiny
Your Destiny number comes from the full name you were given at birth, and it describes what you are here to do and express in this life. A 22 Destiny is a calling you grow into, and it usually comes in three stages: the vision without the means, the long apprenticeship of building the builder, and finally the building itself, often from the forties onward. Execution is usually the half that needs the most work.
A 22 Pinnacle, one of the four long chapters of life, opens the door to large work. Whether you walk through it is up to you.
In a Personal Year
A Personal Year can total 22, but not in every year. In my method the day, the month and the year are each reduced to a single digit before they are added. In 2026 the year reduces to 1, and the day and month together can reach no higher than 18, so no Personal Year that begins on a 2026 birthday is a 22. The next 22 years begin in 2029, for anyone born on 9, 18 or 27 September: 9 plus 9 plus 4 is 22.
When a 22 year does arrive, it carries the 4 year's lessons of work, order and foundations, at a far larger scale. It is a year for laying the base of something big. The Personal Year post in the daily posts shows you how to find yours.
Across the traditions
There is a link to the Major Arcana, with a catch. The Major Arcana has 22 cards, and some decks and writers count The Fool as card 22, placing him at the end of the sequence. In the Rider Waite Smith deck, which is the deck I use, The Fool is card 0, not 22. There is no Minor card for the 22. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you straight to them.
What are you building that will still be standing when you are gone?
