The Emperor tarot card, Rider Waite Smith deck

Structure, order, and the one who holds it.

The picture

A crowned man with a long white beard sits on a square stone throne carved with the heads of rams. He wears armour under a red robe. In his right hand he holds a sceptre shaped like an ankh, and in his left a golden orb. Behind him rise steep, bare mountains under an orange sky, and a narrow stream runs along their foot.

Upright

The Empress grows the garden. The Emperor builds the fence around it.

He is order, rules, boundaries, the plan that gets written down and followed. The throne is square and made of stone because what he builds is meant to last. The armour under the robe says he is ready to defend it. Aries rules him, the first sign of the zodiac and the ram on the throne, and Aries brings the drive to lead and to start.

When he turns up, the situation needs a firmer hand. Make the decision, set the boundary, put the budget together, take charge. It may be you who needs to be the Emperor, or it may be a father, a boss, or an institution you are dealing with. The mountains behind him are bare, so this card is a little short on softness. That is fine. Some jobs need a builder more than a gardener.

Reversed

Reversed, the Emperor is most often too much or too little. Too much is control, the rules kept for their own sake, the boss or parent who will not listen, rigid thinking that cannot bend. Too little is the missing structure: no plan, no boundaries, nobody taking responsibility, and things falling over because nothing is holding them up.

To tell which it is, look at how things feel. If you feel squeezed, somebody has too much Emperor, and it may be you. If everything is loose and drifting, the card is asking you to pick up the sceptre and set some order.
