Kabbalah
Hod, Splendour
The eighth sphere. Splendour, which some books call Glory. It sits at the bottom of the left hand pillar, below Geburah, and the tradition gives it the planet Mercury.
The sphere itself
Hod is the mind at work.
Across from it on the right hand pillar is Netzach, all feeling and desire. Hod is the answer to Netzach the way Geburah is the answer to Chesed. Feeling wants to pour out. Hod gives it a word, a sentence, a plan, a name. The artist needs the critic. The lover needs the part that can think about love. The impulse needs the word that gives it shape, or it stays an impulse.
Mercury sits here, the messenger, the quick one, the planet of language and the market and the clever hand. Hod is thinking, speaking, writing, sorting, explaining, and the pleasure that comes from getting a thought exactly right.
The name Splendour sounds odd for a sphere about the intellect, until you have watched a clear mind lay out a hard problem so that a room full of people suddenly understand it. That is splendour. It is one of the finest things a human being does.
Your name here
If your Kabbalah number is 8, your name lands on Hod. The Kabbalah Numerology page shows you how to work the sum.
Your mind runs. You talk to yourself. You replay the conversation from this morning and work out what you should have said. You take a problem to bed and wake up with it solved. Thinking is one of the real pleasures of your life, and you would be lost without it.
Words work for you. You can explain a complicated thing so that it stays explained. You find the right phrase in the hard moment when everyone else is staring at the floor. You write, speak or teach with an ease that other people have to labour for.
You make distinctions. Two things that look the same show you their difference. Two things that look different show you what they share. This is one of your main gifts and it is quieter than it sounds.
Strengths
Your first gift is clarity. What you think, you can say. What you understand, you can hand to someone else so that they understand it too. In a world drowning in muddled talk, that is worth a great deal.
Your second gift is the sorting mind. You see what others lump together. In any field you work in, your distinctions add real understanding, and people who work with you find their own thinking gets sharper.
Challenges
The shadow of Hod is dryness. Mind that has lost touch with feeling and with the body goes sterile. Analysis with no heart in it, words with no warmth. Netzach is across the Tree for exactly this reason, and a grown Hod has let the heart back into the room.
The second shadow is the critic who never stops. The mind that can find the flaw in anything will, if you let it, and that is exhausting for you and for everyone who lives with you. Point the same faculty at building something and it becomes a gift again.
The third shadow is the commentary that never ends. Some things do not need analysing. Some moments want to be left alone. Learning when to let a thing stand without a word on it is part of growing up on this sphere, and most of us learn it the slow way.
In love and work
In love, a Hod name is interesting, articulate and funny, and the partner who enjoys a good conversation will never run out of one. The risk is that you spend the relationship thinking about it, from a chair slightly to one side. Feelings do not always want to be explained. Sometimes they want a cup of tea and a hand on the shoulder.
In work, you belong among the word workers. Teaching, writing, law, science, counselling, anything where a complex matter has to be made clear and passed on. You are the one who writes the explanation that finally makes sense, and the one who notices that two things in the plan quietly contradict each other.
The tradition also puts the power of the word here, the carefully built sentence, the spoken formula. Whether or not that interests you, the lesson underneath it does. What you say shapes what happens. Choose the words with care and then stand behind them. That is Hod at its best, and across a life the clear thoughts you turned into clear words add up to something far bigger than cleverness.
On the Tree
Five paths touch Hod, each carrying a Major Arcana card, and each card has its own page in The 78 Cards. The Hanged Man comes down from Geburah. The Devil arrives from Tiphareth. The Tower crosses from Netzach, feeling and thinking colliding, and you have met that one. The Sun runs down to Yesod and Judgement down to Malkuth.
The four Eights sit here, one from each suit. The Eights are the rank of skill, speed and the trap you talked yourself into, which is a fair summary of the sphere.
In the Tree of Life Spread, Hod is card 8, on the left, level with Netzach. It shows the thinking, the words, the plans, and the stories you tell yourself.
Across the traditions
The Pythagorean 8 is ambition, money and authority, the executive number, and The Number 8 page describes it. The Kabbalah 8 is the mind and the word. The two systems arrive at different numbers for the same person, so they rarely land together, and when they do a sharp mind drives the ambition and you get an effective leader.
The tradition gives Hod the planet Mercury, and the Mercury page in Western Astrology reads the same quick mind in a birth chart.
What have you explained so many times that you have stopped hearing whether it is true?
