The sphere itself

Chesed is the first sphere below the abyss.
The top three, Kether, Chokmah and Binah, are ideas about ideas. Chesed is where the Tree starts to feel like a life, and the first thing it feels is kindness.
Some books call this sphere Kindness for that reason, and others call it Love. I stay with Mercy because the Tree of Life Spread does.

The old books describe Chesed as the good king, the one who rules by giving.
I think of it as the open hand.
Whatever came down from above arrives here as abundance, and the natural move of the sphere is to share it out.
Across the Tree sits Geburah, Severity, whose job is to say when enough has been given, and the two of them argue in every one of us.

Your name here

When your Kabbalah number is 4, your name sits on Chesed.
The Pythagorean 4 is the builder, the one who likes a plan and a straight wall. This 4 is softer and wider, and if you carry both you will know exactly what I mean by the argument.

You are generous without working at it.
Giving is how you love, how you keep your friendships alive and how you take part in anything.
It shows up in the kitchen and the spare room and the lift to the airport, and it also shows up as attention, patience and the assumption that people mean well.

You think big.
You see possibilities where other people see limits, and you are drawn to anything with room in it for a lot of people.

And you want to lift others.
Building something that helps more than yourself comes naturally to you. Nobody taught you that. You arrived with it.

Strengths

Your main gift is proof that generosity works.
You demonstrate, through the way you live, that giving does not empty you out. It tends to come back by a different road, and watching that happen in your life teaches people more than any sermon would.

Your second gift is noticing who has been left out.
In a family, a workplace or a room full of strangers you are the one who sees the person at the edge and brings them in.
That is quiet work and it holds communities together.

When your Pythagorean numbers also carry a 4, the structure of that 4 gives your generosity a container, and the result is someone whose giving is both large and sustainable.
When only the Kabbalah 4 is present, you are more flowing and open handed than the Pythagorean description of a 4 would suggest, and a little less interested in the plan.

Challenges

The first shadow is enabling.
Giving to someone who needed to meet a consequence you have just paid for them. Mercy that stops a person growing has turned into something else, however good it felt to hand over.
Most of us have done it.

The second is scattering.
Generosity without aim, poured out everywhere and landing nowhere in particular.
Learning to give well is the discipline of this sphere, and it is harder than giving a lot.

The third is trusting too easily.
You assume good will, which is lovely, and some people will take that as an invitation.
A little discernment keeps your generosity safe to go on giving. Think of Geburah as your accountant.

In love and work

In love you need someone who can receive.
Chesed people often pair with people who cannot, and spend years giving into a hole.
Choose a partner who says thank you and means it, and who gives back in their own way, even if it is a different way from yours.
You also need one who will tell you no on your behalf when you cannot say it yourself.

In work you belong where expansion and care meet.
Leadership of the kind that grows people, teaching, healing, hospitality, community building, philanthropy in the broad sense of the word.
Anywhere that money or attention needs to flow outward and reach the right people is your country.

The lesson under both is to let Geburah in.
Learn when to hold firm, when to say no, when the kindest thing is a limit.
That is what turns Chesed from naive into mature, and a mature Chesed is one of the finest things on the Tree.

On the Tree

Four paths touch Chesed.
Vav comes down the right hand pillar from Chokmah and carries The Hierophant. Teth runs across to Geburah and carries Strength. Yod runs down to Tiphareth and carries The Hermit. Kaph runs down the pillar to Netzach and carries The Wheel of Fortune.
The Twenty Two Paths page has the whole set.

The four Fours sit on Chesed, one of each suit, the first point of stability in each.
In the Tree of Life Spread, Chesed is card 4, growth and generosity, what is being given to you or what is expanding.

Across the traditions

The Number 4 page describes the Pythagorean 4, the builder and the organiser, and the two 4s make an odd pair. The systems arrive at different numbers for the same person more often than not, so read both and see which one is yours.
The Jupiter page in Western Astrology describes the planet the tradition gives this sphere, and Jupiter and Chesed are very close cousins: growth, faith, generosity, and the risk of too much of all three.

Who have you been giving to who needed a limit from you instead?
