The sphere itself

Put your finger on the middle of the Tree and it lands on Tiphareth.

Everything above it is principle: the Crown, Wisdom, Understanding, Mercy and Severity, the big ideas before they have a body. Everything below it is the working world: feeling, thought, habit and the kitchen table. Tiphareth is where the two meet, and it is the one sphere with a path to nearly every other.

The tradition calls it the Sun of the Tree, and the picture is right. Every other sphere turns around it. Light goes out from it in all directions. If you take it away, the top of the Tree floats off into the clouds and the bottom sinks into the mud.

Beauty here is the beauty of a well made chair or a bridge that holds, where every part is doing its job and nothing is wasted. Harmony and balance, the whole thing hanging together. Pretty is a different word for a different thing.

Your name here

If your Kabbalah number is 6, your name lands on Tiphareth. The Kabbalah Numerology page shows you how to work the sum, and one of the two worked names on that page lands here.

You are a balancer. When two people are at odds, something in you can hold both sides at once without taking either. The peace settles around you because you are not pulling the room in one direction, and you never had to force it.

You have proportion. Your character hangs together. When your life is working, it has a kind of grace to it that people notice and cannot quite name.

You carry things down and up. You bring a high value into a practical decision, and you bring a practical worry back up to the principle that should be deciding it. Most people live on one floor of the house. You use the stairs.

Strengths

Your first gift is real harmony. Warring impulses calm down near you. Parties who could not agree find an arrangement that works. Situations that had looked impossible find a third way, and nobody is quite sure who thought of it.

Your second gift is taste. Your sense of what fits, what belongs, what is the right size and the right weight, produces things with beauty in them. What you make, how you live, how you set a table or lay out a page, all of it carries the inner balance outward.

Challenges

The shadow of Tiphareth is vanity. The appearance of harmony is easy to arrange and the real thing is hard, and a Tiphareth name can settle for the surface. A beautiful front over a basement nobody has been down to in years. The work is to make sure the inside matches.

The second shadow is the compromise that avoids a necessary fight. You like balance, so you reach for the middle position, and sometimes the middle position is simply wrong. Integrity now and then asks you to pick a side and stay there while people are cross with you. A grown Tiphareth can tell a fair balance from a comfortable one.

The third shadow is perfectionism. Life rarely delivers the beauty this sphere points at. Accepting the imperfect result without going sour on the whole business is part of growing up here.

In love and work

In love, a Tiphareth name is warm, generous and easy to be around, and the danger is that you keep the peace at your own expense. You will absorb a lot before you say anything. Say it sooner. A relationship with real harmony in it has had its arguments.

In work, you are the centre people organise around, whether or not your title says so. Mediation, design, teaching, leading a team, anything where parts have to be brought into a working whole. You see the shape of the thing before the others do.

The tradition also puts sacrifice here, and I take it seriously. The beauty people see in a mature Tiphareth came from letting things go. Small claims of the ego, the need to be right, the need to be seen. What is left after the letting go is what shines. It is the work of a lifetime, and there is no hurry.

On the Tree

More paths touch Tiphareth than any other sphere, eight of them, which is what you would expect of the centre. The High Priestess comes straight down from Kether. The Emperor arrives from Chokmah and The Lovers from Binah. The Hermit comes from Chesed and Justice from Geburah. Below, Death runs to Netzach, The Devil to Hod and Temperance down to Yesod. Every one of those cards has its own page in The 78 Cards. Read them as a set and you have the whole story of a heart being made.

The four Sixes sit here, one from each suit, and the Sixes are the rank of giving and receiving, of balance restored after the hard Fives.

In the Tree of Life Spread, Tiphareth is card 6, in the middle of the layout. It is the heart of the matter.

Across the traditions

The Pythagorean 6 is responsibility, home and service, and The Number 6 page describes it. The Kabbalah 6 is harmony and the eye for what fits. The two systems arrive at different numbers for the same person, so they rarely land together, and when they do the care has an unusual grace to it.

The tradition gives Tiphareth the Sun, and the Sun page in Western Astrology reads the same centre in a birth chart.

Where in your life does the outside look balanced while the inside is still waiting for you to come down the stairs?
