Kabbalah
Geburah, Severity
The fifth sphere. Severity, which some books call Strength. It sits in the middle of the left hand pillar, and the tradition gives it the planet Mars.
The sphere itself
Geburah is the sphere of the cut.
Above it on the same pillar is Binah, which gives things their shape. Across from it on the right hand pillar is Chesed, Mercy, which gives and gives and would keep giving until there was nothing left. Geburah is the answer to that. It is the hand that says enough, the pruning saw, the line drawn on the floor.
The old writers put the warrior here, and the surgeon, and the judge. I would add the gardener in late winter, standing in front of a rose with the secateurs, knowing that what gets cut now is what flowers in spring. None of these people are cruel. All of them know that something has to go so that something else can live.
Without Geburah, mercy turns to mush. With it, mercy has an edge, and an edge is what makes it useful.
Your name here
If your Kabbalah number is 5, your name lands on Geburah. The Kabbalah Numerology page shows you how to work the sum.
You carry strength, and most people do not see how much of it until they lean on you. It is a quiet kind of strength. You can apply pressure exactly where it is needed and nowhere else, and you can do it without raising your voice.
You can tell the difference between what should be kept and what should go. That sounds simple. It is one of the rarest things I see in a reading. Most people hang on to everything and hope it sorts itself out.
You will hold a line. The hard conversation, the boundary nobody else will enforce, the no that has to be said to someone you love. You can do it. You should not enjoy it, and mostly you do not, but you can do it.
Strengths
Your first gift is that limits mean something when you are in the room. A family with a Geburah name in it has rules that actually hold. A workplace with one has standards that are more than words on a poster in the kitchen. Consequences follow actions, and everyone quietly relaxes because they know where the edges are.
Your second gift is judgement. When something has to be weighed, kept or ended, your call tends to be right, and people learn to come to you for it. You are the one who gets asked "what do you really think" because they know you will tell them.
Challenges
The shadow of Geburah is harshness. The same strength that serves justice can turn cruel, and it turns cruel fastest when your own old wounds have not been looked at. A severity that comes from hurt is a different animal from a severity that comes from care, and the people on the receiving end can always tell. The work is to know which one is talking before you open your mouth.
The second shadow is rigidity. The part of you that makes form can forget how to bend. Sometimes the rule was wrong, or the moment changed, and the strong thing is to adapt.
The third shadow is the sword that never goes back in the scabbard. When every conversation is a battle and every stranger a possible enemy, you are tired and so is everyone around you. Most things are not a fight. Learning when to put the sword down is where Geburah grows up.
In love and work
In love, a Geburah name is loyal and protective, and it needs a partner who can take a straight answer. You will say what you see. The gift you bring is safety, because you will defend what is yours. The risk is that you run the relationship like a court, with hearings and verdicts. Mercy is on the other pillar for a reason. Borrow from it often.
In work, you belong anywhere a hard decision has to be made and then stood behind. Medicine, law, editing, quality control, and the kind of leadership that sometimes has to let people go. You are the person who makes the decision that had to be made and did not get made for two years because nobody else would. Lived well, your strength is trusted because it is always paired with care.
The whole of your work on this sphere comes to one thing. Hold strength and mercy in the same hand. The warrior without mercy is only a killer. The judge without compassion is only a tyrant. You are neither, and the daily practice is to keep it that way.
On the Tree
Four paths touch Geburah, and each carries a Major Arcana card. The Chariot comes down from Binah, Strength crosses from Chesed, Justice runs down to Tiphareth, and The Hanged Man drops to Hod. Look at that company. Control, courage, fairness and surrender. That is the whole curriculum of the sphere in four cards, and each has its own page in The 78 Cards.
The four Fives sit here, one from each suit, and anyone who has read the Fives knows they are the hardest rank in the Minor Arcana. Loss, conflict, want and worry. That is Geburah doing its work.
In the Tree of Life Spread, Geburah is card 5, on the left, level with Chesed. It shows what has to be cut away.
Across the traditions
The Pythagorean 5 is freedom, movement and change, and The Number 5 page describes it. The Kabbalah 5 is close to its opposite, discipline and limit. The two systems arrive at different numbers for the same person, so a Pythagorean 5 is rarely a Kabbalah 5 as well, and when someone does carry both I find a love of freedom held in check by a real respect for structure.
The tradition gives Geburah the planet Mars, and the Mars page in Western Astrology reads the same energy in a birth chart.
What in your life have you known for a long time needs cutting, and what has stopped you picking up the saw?
