The sphere itself

Look at a drawing of the Tree and you will see a space.

The top three spheres, the Crown, Wisdom and Understanding, sit above a gap the tradition calls the abyss. Below it, the other seven spheres get on with becoming real. Right in that gap, on the middle pillar, some drawings show a faint dotted circle. That is Daath. Most drawings leave it out, and so does the Tree of Life Spread.

Daath means Knowledge, of a very particular kind. Chokmah is the flash of insight. Binah is the understanding that gives the flash a shape. When the two meet properly, something arrives that is neither of them. You know. You cannot say how, you do not need to argue it, and you could not forget it if you tried.

The old writers say it only appears on the Tree when the top three have been brought together in a person. Most of the time it is not there, and when it is, you will not need anyone to tell you. I think of it as the trapdoor in the ceiling.

Your name here

Nobody's name lands on Daath by my method. The Kabbalah Numerology page explains the arithmetic. Every total is reduced to one digit, so the result is always 1 to 9, and 11 does not come up as a Kabbalah number. Pythagorean numerology does keep 11 as a Master Number, and that is a different system, which I come back to below.

So when the Tree speaks of Daath in a reading, it is pointing at a kind of knowing that has turned up in your life, or is about to. Your name stays on its own sphere.

The Daath quality, when I meet it in someone, looks like this. They know things, and the knowing has a different texture from cleverness. They see the small pattern, the middle pattern and the large pattern at the same time, and they can tell you how the three connect.

And they wake people up without meaning to. Sit with one for an hour and your own questions start coming to the surface. It comes off them like warmth off a stove, with no effort on either side.

Strengths

The first gift of Daath is knowledge that can be passed on. What is understood here can be handed to someone else in a way that changes them. Good teaching has this quality. So does a good reading, on a good day.

The second gift is the catalyst. People move along their own path by being near this quality, whether anyone intends it or not. It is what the best teachers have in common.

Challenges

The shadow of Daath is inflation. Direct knowing can tip into the belief that you were specially chosen to have it, and from there to pronouncing on everyone and everything. The grown version knows the knowing comes through you, the way light comes through a window. Humility here is structural. Take it out and the whole thing collapses.

The second shadow is the abyss itself. Daath sits in the gap, and people who touch it go through periods of confusion, dissolution and loss of meaning that feel like something has gone badly wrong. Often nothing has. It is the territory. All the same, nobody should cross it alone. Find people who can sit with you through it.

The third shadow is loneliness at the level of sight. If you see what others cannot, there will be days when nobody can meet you there. Find your peers, even if there are only two of them. Two is enough.

In love and work

In love, a Daath quality is intense and perceptive, and the partner needs room to be ordinary around it. Nobody wants to be understood all the time. Let them have the cup of tea and the crossword, and come down to meet them there.

In work, this quality belongs in teaching, writing, healing, spiritual direction and the quiet kind of mentoring that leaves no title behind it, only changed people. The form varies. The function is always the same. Someone else sees further because you were there.

The work of Daath is the responsible handling of what you know. Carried before the inner work is done, it produces spiritual pride and disorientation. Carried after, it produces the teachers who are remembered forty years later. Do the inner work first. There is no shortcut, which is what you would expect from a sphere that will not appear until you are ready.

On the Tree

No paths touch Daath. None of the twenty two Major Arcana are placed on it, and no rank of the Minor Arcana sits on it. The four Aces are above it on Kether and the four Sixes are below it on Tiphareth, and Daath stands in the empty middle between them, on the straight line that The High Priestess travels from Kether down to the heart of the Tree.

In the Tree of Life Spread it has no card. When I feel a reading has touched Daath, it is usually because the whole middle pillar has lit up with Majors and the sitter already knows what the cards are going to say before I turn them. That happens more than you would think.

Across the traditions

Pythagorean numerology keeps 11 whole as a Master Number, the illuminator, the one who brings a higher truth into the everyday, and the Numerology pages describe it. My Kabbalah method reduces 11 to 2 and lands on Chokmah, so the two systems arrive at different places for the same name. When a Pythagorean 11 shows up in a chart alongside a reading that has touched Daath, I pay attention. Two systems pointing the same way is worth a pause, and three is worth acting on.

The tradition gives Daath no planet, so there is no planet page to send you to. Read Chokmah and Binah instead, because Daath is what happens when they meet.

What do you know, right now, that you have never once been able to explain?

If you would like this read against your own chart, my readings are here.
