White Dog
The tenth of the twenty day signs. The Maya of Yucatan called it Oc, and it is the dog in the plainest sense: the one who walks beside you, who knows your step on the path before it sees you, and who does not leave.
White Dog belongs to the white family, with White Wind, White Worldbridger, White Wizard and White Mirror. In the Tzolkin the colours take turns: red begins, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. A white sign takes something that already exists and makes it finer, and what White Dog refines is loyalty. If your kin is a White Dog, you were born knowing what it means to stand by someone.
The nature of the sign
Anyone who has lived with a dog knows it never needed to be taught devotion. It is simply what a dog is. White Dog people are like that. Loyalty is the ground they stand on, and they are often surprised to learn that other people experience it as a choice.
The sign carries faithfulness, companionship and a kind of knowing that comes in through the nose rather than the head. A White Dog knows when something is off in a room, in a deal, in a friend, long before it can say why.
The teaching of this sign is about where loyalty should point. Devotion is a powerful thing, and like any power it can be given to the wrong master. The life work of a White Dog is learning to give it to people and causes that keep faith with its own integrity.
Who you are
You are faithful, intuitive and quick to pick up the emotional state of the people around you. You are at your best when you have someone to walk alongside.
You are straight with people, and dishonesty in others unsettles you more than almost anything. You like to know where you stand. A vague friendship, an unspoken arrangement, a "we'll see" where a yes or no was wanted, these make you anxious, and you will keep returning to the question until it is answered.
You are playful. People forget this about White Dogs because the loyalty is so visible, but there is a pup in there who likes a game, a joke, a run on the beach. You are also capable of real gravity when the moment asks for it.
Strengths
The first strength is reliability. When a White Dog says it will be there, it is there, and in a world where that has become rare it is worth more than gold. People build their lives around you.
The second is support without judgement. You can stand beside someone through a divorce, a diagnosis, a bankruptcy, and never once make them feel smaller for it. You understand that friendship asks something of you, and you give it.
The third is the nose. Your sense for people is good, and when you trust it, it saves you and the people you love a great deal of trouble.
Challenges
The shadow of White Dog is loyalty that has turned into dependency. You can stay in a friendship, a job or a marriage long after it has stopped being good for you, because leaving feels like betrayal and betrayal is the one thing you cannot do. Ask yourself a hard question now and then. Am I staying because this is right, or because I am frightened of what happens if I go?
The second trap is expecting your own level of devotion from everyone else. Most people are not White Dogs. They love you in their own way, and when it does not look like yours, it is not always a failure of love.
The third is being taken for granted, and sometimes taken advantage of. Your nose knows when it is happening. Listen to it.
In love and work
In love you are one of the quieter signs. What you will do is turn up, every day, for forty years, and remember the small things, and in my experience that outlasts any sonnet. You need a partner who shows up for you as steadily as you show up for them. Betrayal cuts you deeper than it cuts most, and for you physical closeness lives inside commitment.
At work you belong where dedication matters: medicine, nursing, teaching, social work, animal care, any role where people depend on you and you can see that they do. You are a natural team player and you do well in a place with clear roles and shared values. You will not last long somewhere dishonest, and no salary fixes it.
Your sign across the tones
Your tone is worked out from your kin, and the Thirteen Tones page explains all thirteen. Here is how White Dog tends to read at three points on that scale.
With a low tone, 1 to 4, Magnetic or Self Existing for instance, loyalty is purpose and structure. A Magnetic White Dog knows exactly who and what it is here to stand by. A Self Existing White Dog builds the frameworks, the family routines and the standing arrangements that let devotion last.
With a middle tone, 5 to 9, say Rhythmic, the sign is the balancer in a group. A Rhythmic White Dog senses when a friendship or a team has tilted out of true and quietly puts it right, often without anyone noticing it was done.
With a high tone, 10 to 13, Planetary or Spectral for instance, loyalty grows up. A Planetary White Dog turns devotion into something built, a household, a practice, a working team that holds. A Spectral White Dog has learned the hardest lesson of the sign, how to let go of a bond that has run its course without calling it betrayal.
Across the traditions
White Dog sits in the white family of the Tzolkin, the refiners, beside Wind, Worldbridger, Wizard and Mirror. The Western Astrology section and The Signs pages will show you where loyalty and steadiness sit in your own birth chart. The Chinese Astrology section has a Dog of its own among The Animals, a different count with a different meaning, and the Vedic Astrology section and The Nakshatras pages give you another again.
Who have you stayed loyal to who has not returned the favour, and what would it take to say so?
