Red Moon belongs to the red family, with Red Dragon, Red Serpent, Red Skywalker and Red Earth. In the Tzolkin the colours take turns: red begins, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. A red sign starts things, and what Red Moon starts is feeling. If your kin is a Red Moon, you were born to notice the weather in a room before anyone has said a word.

The nature of the sign

Water does not argue. It finds the low ground, it rises and falls, it goes where it is going. Red Moon people live that way. Life comes to them as a series of waves, and they have learned, or are learning, that a wave is a thing to be ridden rather than solved.

The sign is tuned to emotion the way a good radio is tuned to a station. A Red Moon picks up the shift in someone's mood across a table, the tension in a house before the door is fully open, the sadness behind a cheerful answer. It is an instrument, and like any instrument it needs looking after.

The teaching of this sign, as I understand it, is that the heart has its own intelligence. The head is a fine thing, and I would not be without mine, but it does not know everything, and a Red Moon is here to remind the rest of us of that.

Who you are

You feel things first and think about them afterwards. You are empathic, intuitive and nurturing, and you care, truly, about the people in your life being well. You have a rich inner world, and often a gift for writing, music or art.

You are also changeable. The Moon has phases and so do you, and the people who love you learn that the mood on Tuesday is not a verdict on the week. You are more sensitive to criticism than you let on, you can be badly hurt by coldness, and you want, more than you would admit to a stranger, to be loved and accepted as you are.

You are the one people ring late at night. You already know this.

Strengths

The first strength is the ability to put words to what others cannot. A Red Moon can say "you are grieving and you have not let yourself" to someone who has spent six months calling it tiredness, and say it so gently that it lands.

The second is the making of safe places. People relax around you. They tell you things, because something in your presence says it is all right to feel here.

The third is imagination. A Red Moon's inner life is deep water, and what comes up out of it carries emotional truth that drier signs cannot reach.

Challenges

The shadow of Red Moon is losing yourself in other people's water. You can become so busy feeling what everyone else is feeling that you no longer know which feelings are yours. I have watched Red Moons walk out of a crowded room carrying a stranger's mood and wonder why they were suddenly so low.

The second trap is using sensitivity as an excuse. "I was too upset" can be true and it can also be a way of not turning up. The work is to tell the difference, kindly, and to turn up anyway when it matters.

The third is self pity, which is what happens to feeling when it goes round in circles with nowhere to flow. The cure is movement: a walk, a swim, a conversation, a page written. Water that moves stays clean.

In love and work

In love you are devoted. You want to be known all the way down, and you want to know your partner the same way. Casual arrangements and emotional distance sit badly with you, and you should not pretend otherwise to keep the peace. You need someone who can receive your feeling without trying to fix it or talk you out of it. For you physical closeness and emotional closeness are one thing.

At work you belong where feeling and care are the job: counselling, teaching, nursing and midwifery, writing, the arts, work with children or animals or the land. You make places feel like home, and that is a skill. You will struggle in a cold, purely rational environment that asks you to leave your heart in the car park.

Your sign across the tones

Your tone is worked out from your kin, and the Thirteen Tones page explains all thirteen. Here is how Red Moon tends to read at three points on that scale.

With a low tone, 1 to 4, Magnetic or Electric for instance, the feeling is fresh and forward. A Magnetic Red Moon knows what it is here to feel and to heal, and draws people who need that. An Electric Red Moon sets feeling in motion, the friend whose tears give everyone else permission.

With a middle tone, 5 to 9, say Galactic, the sign thinks in tides and systems. A Galactic Red Moon sees how one person's grief moves through a whole family, and acts with care for the whole, sometimes at the cost of forgetting its own heart.

With a high tone, 10 to 13, Spectral or Cosmic for instance, the water has learned to let go. A Spectral Red Moon releases old feeling the way a river drops silt. A Cosmic Red Moon has lived through enough tides to know that every ending is a return, and sits with people at the end of things without flinching.

Across the traditions

Red Moon sits in the red family of the Tzolkin, the beginners, beside Dragon, Serpent, Skywalker and Earth. In the Western Astrology section the Moon has a page of its own and another for the Moon in the Signs, and much of what is said there about feeling and the tides will feel familiar to you. The Chinese Astrology and Vedic Astrology sections, with The Animals and The Nakshatras pages, give you two more counts to lay beside this one.
