Kin 3 is Blue Night with tone 3, and the sign returns every twenty days through the count, each time wearing a different tone.

The nature of the sign

Red Dragon begins. White Wind speaks. Blue Night goes down into the dark to find out what is really there.

Akbal is the night, the cave, the dream you wake from with something you did not have before. It is the fertile dark that everything grows out of, and the Maya did not treat it as something to be afraid of. Seeds do their first work underground. So does this sign.

I call it the transformer of intuition, and the word transform is the key. Blue Night takes fear and turns it into understanding. It is the sign of the person who has been to the bottom of something and come back with a lamp.

Who you are

You feel life at full volume. Beauty can bring you to tears and so can injustice, and you have long since given up pretending otherwise. You are drawn to what is underneath: the motive behind the words, the wound behind the behaviour, the meaning behind the dream.

People tell you that you understand them in a way that is almost unnerving. You see what they have not said. That comes without effort, because it is simply how you are built.

You need solitude the way other people need coffee. Time alone is how you process what you have taken in and find your way back to yourself. The people who love you learn that your withdrawals are maintenance.

Strengths

Depth. You are not satisfied with the surface of anything, and that makes you a natural at any work that asks what is really going on. You encourage the people around you to be real, because you cannot stand anything else, and your friendships tend to be the ones people describe as life changing.

You are also brave in a quiet way. Walking into the dark, your own or someone else's, takes a courage that does not look like courage from outside. In my experience the Blue Night in a room is often the one who says the thing nobody wanted to name, gently, and then stays to help with it.

Challenges

The same depth that lets you see so much can pull you under. Blue Night's shadow is the spiral: the fear that feeds on itself, the low mood that settles in, the thought that goes round and round in the small hours. The way out is nearly always the body and other people. A walk, a meal with a friend, something made with the hands. Thinking harder only feeds the spiral.

Boundaries are the other piece of work. You absorb what other people feel, and if you are not careful you end up carrying it for them. Learning the difference between your feelings and theirs is a lifelong practice for this sign, and it is worth every bit of the effort.

And a word about the inner life. Some of it feeds you. Some of it is a place to hide. Blue Night learns, slowly, to tell which is which.

In love and work

In love you bring real depth and real care for who your partner is becoming. You are loyal and you are devoted, and you are hopeless at pretending to feel what you do not feel. Dishonesty in a relationship, yours or theirs, makes you ill. Physical closeness matters to you most when the heart is already open.

You need a partner who respects your solitude and does not panic when you go quiet. Give you that, and you give back a kind of understanding that most people only read about.

At work you belong where human nature is the subject: counselling, psychology, energy work, art, research into the things mainstream medicine has not got round to yet. You wither in places that value speed over meaning and discourage anyone from asking why. You thrive where there is a mystery to go into and someone waiting for what you bring back.

Your sign across the tones

Every Blue Night also carries one of the thirteen tones, and the tone changes how the sign is lived. The Thirteen Tones page covers each one in full.

With a low tone, 1 to 4, the dreamer is still learning the shape of the dark. Tone 1 Blue Night knows what it has gone down to find. Tone 2 feels the pull between the inner world and the outer one and has to learn to live in both, and tones 3 and 4 give the inner life a voice and then a form.

With a middle tone, 5 to 9, the sign has found its footing. Tone 6 Blue Night, in the library's own example, uses its sensitivity to the dark to help other people find their balance rather than losing its own. Tone 7 hears the faint signal under the noise, and tone 8 understands how one person's healing spreads through a whole family.

With a high tone, 10 to 13, the dreamer is ripening. Tone 11 sees through the fear itself and lets it dissolve. Tone 12 brings its depth to a group, and tone 13 Blue Night, kin 143, is the one who has walked the whole cave and can sit calmly in the dark with anyone.

Across the traditions

Blue Night sits in the blue family, the five signs that transform what the white signs have refined. If you know your Western chart, you will find a kinship with the water signs, Scorpio and Pisces most of all, and with the twelfth house, and the Western Astrology section covers both. The Chinese Astrology section and the Vedic Astrology section each describe the inward, intuitive nature in their own terms, and the Vedic nakshatras in particular have a lot to say about dreams.

What has your own dark taught you that the daylight never could?
