Yellow Human belongs to the yellow family, with Yellow Seed, Yellow Star, Yellow Warrior and Yellow Sun. In the Tzolkin the colours take turns: red begins, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. A yellow sign brings something to its full expression, and what Yellow Human ripens is wisdom. If your kin is a Yellow Human, you were born to learn from your own life and to pass on what you learned.

The nature of the sign

Of the twenty signs, this is the one that looks most like us. Dragon, Serpent, Eagle and Storm are forces of nature. Yellow Human is a person standing at a fork in a road, with free will and no guarantee, working out which way to go. That is the whole human condition in one picture, and the sign carries it.

The gift of the sign is the ability to turn experience into understanding. Plenty of people have experiences. Fewer learn anything from them. A Yellow Human cannot help learning. Every mistake becomes a lesson, every lesson a piece of something larger, and over a lifetime that adds up to the kind of wisdom you cannot buy or read your way into.

I have long thought that this is the sign of the mentor, the person you go to when you have already read the books and still do not know what to do. They will ask you three questions and you will leave knowing.

Who you are

You are introspective and intelligent, and you take your own development seriously, perhaps too seriously. You are drawn to the big questions: what a life is for, how to live in keeping with what you believe, what makes people do the things they do.

You are conscientious. You take responsibility seriously and you follow through, and you prefer to understand the consequences of a choice before you make it. You are quiet by inclination, more an observer than a performer, and you have a dry sense of humour that the loud people miss.

You hold yourself to a high standard and you are disappointed, often, when you fall short of it.

Strengths

The first strength is depth. You do not skate. When you take something on, you go all the way into it and come out knowing it properly.

The second is steadiness. You are capable of sustained effort toward something that matters, year after year, long after the quick starters have moved on.

The third is the mentor's gift. People in difficulty come to you, and you can help them see their own situation more clearly because you have done the same work on yourself. What you say comes from having been there.

Challenges

The shadow of Yellow Human is the judge inside. The same standard that makes you conscientious can turn on you, and a Yellow Human can spend years quietly punishing itself for being human. The irony of that, given the name of the sign, is not lost on me and should not be lost on you.

The second trap is isolation. Introspection is a good tool and a poor home. You can disappear so far into your own head that the people who love you cannot find you.

The third is perfectionism pointed outward, demanding of others what you demand of yourself. Most people are doing their best with what they have. So, I would gently suggest, are you.

In love and work

In love you are real. You do not play games and you do not do casual well, and you should not pretend otherwise to fit in. You want depth, and you want a partner who is also interested in growing, who will do the inner work alongside you rather than leave it all to you. You need room to think, and a partner who takes your silences as rejection will struggle. You show love in actions and constancy more than in words, and it is worth telling the person you love that this is how it comes.

At work you belong where understanding is the product: teaching, counselling, psychology, research, writing, healing work of every kind, anywhere you can help another person see further than they could alone. Mentoring suits you down to the ground. You will wither in a job that rewards mindless compliance or that has no room for the question "but what is this for?"

Your sign across the tones

Your tone is worked out from your kin, and the Thirteen Tones page explains all thirteen. Here is how Yellow Human tends to read at three points on that scale.

With a low tone, 1 to 4, Magnetic or Lunar for instance, the wisdom is still forming its question. A Magnetic Yellow Human knows early what it is here to understand and bends its life around that. A Lunar Yellow Human lives with the tension between the ideal self and the actual one, and the reconciling of the two becomes its teaching.

With a middle tone, 5 to 9, say Solar, the sign shines a light on purpose. A Solar Yellow Human sees what a situation is for, and what a person could become, with unusual clarity, and must learn not to hold others to a vision they did not choose.

With a high tone, 10 to 13, Crystal or Cosmic for instance, the wisdom becomes shared. A Crystal Yellow Human brings people together around what they have each learned the hard way. A Cosmic Yellow Human has lived a full cycle of choice and consequence and holds the whole of it with compassion, the elder at the end of the table who says little and misses nothing.

Across the traditions

Yellow Human sits in the yellow family of the Tzolkin, the ripeners, beside Seed, Star, Warrior and Sun. The Western Astrology section and The Signs pages will show you where conscience and the long road sit in your own birth chart. The Chinese Astrology and Vedic Astrology sections, with The Animals and The Nakshatras pages, each give you another count, and a Yellow Human will enjoy laying all three side by side to see what agrees.

What have you learned the hard way that you have never yet passed on to anyone?
