Red begins, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. Mirror is the white sign of self awareness. It refines by showing you what is actually there.

The nature of the sign

Etznab is the obsidian blade and the polished surface, and the two belong together. A mirror shows you your face without comment. A blade cuts cleanly through what was in the way. Both are about clarity, and neither one flatters.

The deeper teaching of this sign is that the world you see is a reflection of the one who is looking. What irritates you in other people is very often something of your own you have not yet owned. Mirror people learn this early, sometimes uncomfortably, and the white colour tells you what to do with it: refine. Get clearer. Clean the glass.

Who you are

If you were born under White Mirror, you see through things. You notice when a story does not add up, when someone is performing rather than being, and you are not good at pretending you did not notice. You hold yourself to the same standard. You can look at your own motives and patterns with a clarity most people never manage, and you are drawn to psychology, philosophy and any practice that asks the hard questions about who you really are.

People see themselves in you, whether they wanted to or not. Spend an evening with a Mirror and you tend to go home thinking about your own life. That is a gift, though not everyone receives it as one.

You are direct. You say what is true in plain words, and you can land as tactless when you meant to be helpful. For all that sharpness, you are not well armoured. Criticism gets through to you, even the criticism you can tell is unfair.

Strengths

Clear sight, straight talk and the courage to look at yourself without flinching. You help people see what they have been avoiding, and you do it best when you remember to be kind about it. You are analytical, you spot subtle patterns, and you cannot be bought with a comfortable lie. You are the friend who tells people what they need to hear. In my experience that friend is complained about on Tuesday and thanked on Friday.

Challenges

The shadow of the Mirror is a glass that only shows flaws. Trained on what is wrong, the eye stops seeing what is whole and beautiful, in other people and in yourself. Truth used as a weapon stops being truth and becomes just another way of winning. And the self criticism that was meant to make you better can turn so severe that it freezes you where you stand.

The piece of work for this sign is compassion for the hiding. Everyone hides something, and they usually have a reason that made sense to them once. Your role is to be so plainly yourself that other people feel safe to drop theirs. The clearest mirror in the world is useless to someone who is afraid to look into it.

Seeing clearly includes seeing the good. Say that one out loud when you forget it.

In love and work

In love you bring a rare thing, the ability to see your partner exactly as they are and love them anyway. You are not a romantic by nature and you can seem cool or critical. You need a partner who values truth and who can hear your feedback without reading it as rejection, and you will struggle with anyone who prefers a comfortable illusion to an uncomfortable fact. Intimacy for you has to be real, with no performance in it. You want a partner who will do the inner work beside you, and your friendships tend to form around the big questions and frank talk about where each of you actually is.

At work you suit counselling, coaching, psychology, research and teaching, anything that asks you to see a pattern and reflect it back so someone else can see it too. You excel at analysis and at helping people believe they can change. What you cannot tolerate is a workplace that rewards pretence or punishes people for saying what is so.

Your sign across the tones

Your tone, 1 to 13, is the pulse behind the sign, and the Thirteen Tones page walks through each one. With a low tone, 1 to 4, the Mirror is learning what to do with what it sees. Tone 1 gives it a clear purpose for its truth telling, tone 2 shows it both sides of every reflection, tone 3 speaks the truth quickly and sometimes too quickly, and tone 4 wants to build a framework for understanding what it sees.

With a middle tone, 5 to 9, the clarity carries weight. A tone 5 Mirror has real influence over how others see themselves, tone 6 reflects in fair proportion, tone 7 is attuned to the feeling under the fact, tone 8 lives its own truth without exception, and tone 9 shines a light on the purpose behind the pattern.

With a high tone, 10 to 13, the Mirror is finishing a work of seeing. Tone 10 turns clarity into practical change, tone 11 dissolves the last illusions, tone 12 helps a group see itself truthfully together, and tone 13 understands the whole reflection at once and can finally put the glass down.

Across the traditions

White Mirror belongs to the white family, the refiners, alongside White Wind, White Worldbridger, White Dog and White Wizard. Your kin is one layer of a full portrait. The Western Astrology section reads the planets at your birth, the Chinese Astrology section reads your year animal, and the Vedic Astrology section reads the sidereal sky and your Moon's nakshatra, and each of them will show you a different face in the same glass.

What do you see in other people that you have not yet been willing to see in yourself?
