Western Astrology
Pisces
The two fish, swimming in opposite directions and tied together by a cord. One is in this world. The other is somewhere else entirely, and Pisces lives in both at once.
The Sun is in Pisces from about 19 February to 20 March. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so if your birthday sits within a day of either end, check your actual chart before you claim the sign.
Pisces is a water sign, the third and last of the three, and the last sign of the zodiac altogether. Its mode is mutable, which means it carries water's feeling with a loose grip and the ability to take the shape of whatever holds it. Its modern ruler is Neptune, the planet of dreams, dissolving and the sea. Its traditional ruler, from before Neptune was found in 1846, is Jupiter, and Jupiter's faith and generosity are still plain in the sign. I read both. The Elements and Modes page explains what water and mutable mean in a chart before you learn anything else about a sign.
The nature of Pisces
A Pisces feels the room. Walk in carrying a bad day and the Pisces will know before you have sat down, and may well start carrying it for you without either of you noticing the handover.
This is the sign of the mystic and the dreamer, with a foot in the ordinary world and a foot in the one beneath it. Pisces senses the currents under the surface of things, and much of the art, music and poetry that stops people in their tracks has a Pisces somewhere near it.
Being the twelfth sign, Pisces carries a little of all the others. In my experience that is why Pisceans can seem to understand anyone, and why they so often lose track of where everyone else stops and they begin.
Strengths
The gift of this sign is intuition. A Pisces hears what is under the words and understands people at a level they have not reached themselves. It can sit with someone's pain without rushing to fix it or make it smaller, which is rarer than it sounds.
Its compassion is real and it sees the good in people, often before they see it. It adapts to almost anyone and almost anywhere. Its creativity comes from a deep well, and it can imagine a world kinder than this one clearly enough to make other people want to help build it.
Challenges
The shadow of all that openness is that nothing keeps the water out. A Pisces absorbs other people's moods until it cannot tell which feelings are its own, and ends the day drained without knowing why. It says yes when it is already stretched thin, because the no feels unkind.
When the world gets too loud, the sign reaches for the exit. That can be a book or the ocean, which is fine, or it can be the bottle, the screen or a fantasy life more vivid than the real one, which is not. Mutable water can also look unreliable, because what Pisces committed to on Tuesday depends on how Pisces feels on Thursday.
The deeper piece of work is the martyr. The Pisces story can become one about a person to whom things happen, who gives too much and is always misunderstood, and that story is comfortable in a way that keeps the person stuck. The bills and the forms tend to go untended while the dream is being tended.
None of this is a sentence. It is a mirror. The Pisces who learns that compassion begins at home, that a boundary is an act of self care rather than selfishness, and that the world needs its presence more than its sacrifice, keeps all the depth and finally has somewhere dry to stand.
In love and friendship
Pisces loves as a merging. It wants a partner it can join with in body, in heart and in spirit, and it will give the whole of itself to the right person. That is the beauty of it and the danger of it in the same sentence.
It needs someone who respects its sensitivity and its need for quiet, who has depth, and who offers enough solid ground that the Pisces does not float away. It is drawn to the wounded, and has a habit of choosing people who are unavailable or who need more rescuing than loving.
The growing edge is staying yourself inside the relationship. Real love does not require a Pisces to vanish into the other person, and it is allowed to want things.
As a friend, a Pisces is the one people bring their grief to, and the one who remembers exactly how you felt that day when you had forgotten yourself.
At work
Pisces does well wherever feeling and imagination are the job: art, music, dance, writing, counselling, psychology, nursing, social work, healing of every kind, and spiritual teaching. It needs the work to mean something, and it cannot give itself to a cause it finds hollow.
It wants a workplace that values intuition alongside the spreadsheet, and colleagues mature enough to see sensitivity as a strength. Cutthroat or purely profit driven environments wear it down fast. It is at its best when someone else handles the logistics and it is left free to do the creative or the human part.
Pisces as a Moon sign
The Moon is your inner weather, what you need to feel safe and how you respond before you have thought about it. With the Moon in Pisces, you feel everything. Yours is the most permeable of all the Moons. You pick up the mood of a room, a partner, the evening news, and often cannot tell afterwards which of it was yours. What makes you safe is solitude, water, music and dreams, and regular time alone so that your system can sort what it has gathered. You may have vivid dreams and moments of plain knowing, and learning to trust those while telling them apart from projection is part of the work. Your gift is a compassion few can match. Your shadow is drowning, and practical containers, early nights, less news, a few trusted people who can tell you whether a thing looks the way it feels, are what keep you afloat. The Moon in the Signs page covers all twelve Moon signs.
Pisces as a Rising sign
Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it describes the face you show the world and the way you set out. Pisces Rising comes across as gentle, dreamy and a little hard to pin down, with eyes that seem to be looking at something just behind you. People confide in you within minutes of meeting you and are never sure why. One caution, and it is a firm one: the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs a birth time accurate to within about fifteen minutes. "Early hours" is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart, and the Rising sign in it may not be yours.
The season of Pisces
The Sun moves through Pisces in the last weeks before the March equinox. In the northern hemisphere that is the tail of winter, the thaw and the first green, the season ending at the spring equinox. Here in Perth, in the south, it is the end of summer sliding into autumn, the heat finally breaking and the light going soft and gold by five. The last sign closing the circle in the weeks before the equinox is fitting, since Aries picks it up again at the equinox itself. The post called The spring equinox explains what an equinox actually is, and the Week Ahead posts each Monday carry what the sky is doing in any given week of the season.
Across the traditions
In the tarot, Pisces belongs to The Moon, card 18 of the Major Arcana, the path between two towers under a moon that lights everything and shows nothing clearly. It is the card of intuition, dreams and the things that live under the surface, which is Pisces to the letter. Pisces is water and mutable. Neptune is its ruler, with Jupiter as the traditional ruler. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view of this sign, which places the dates differently. The links beside this page take you to the card and to the pages for Neptune and Jupiter.
