The Sun is in Taurus from about 20 April to about 20 May. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so if your birthday sits within a day of either end, check your actual chart before you settle on the sign. Taurus is an earth sign, fixed in mode, and it is ruled by Venus. Earth that holds, with a love of beauty running through it.

The nature of Taurus

Where Aries starts things, Taurus makes them real. The Taurus nature is solid in a way other people find deeply reassuring. It does not rush. It considers, it decides, and then it builds, one foundation on top of the last. Nothing about it is flashy and almost everything about it lasts.

Venus gives the sign its other side. Taurus is the most sensual sign in the zodiac, and I do not mean that in the cheap way. It means a refined pleasure in the things you can touch, taste and see: a good meal, a well made chair, a garden in the late afternoon, the weight of a decent coat. Taurus values security, and in my experience that is rarely about fear. It is a plain understanding that a person flourishes when the ground under them is steady.

As a fixed sign it has staying power that borders on the geological. Once Taurus has chosen a path it stays on it, and it would rather finish one thing beautifully than ten things in a hurry.

Strengths

Reliability, before anything else. When a Taurus says they will do something, it is done. They turn up, they follow through, and over years that consistency becomes something close to legendary among the people who know them. Patience comes with it. A Taurus can work toward a distant goal for a very long time without needing a reward along the way.

They have a natural practical wisdom, especially about money and resources. They know what holds its value and what does not. They are generous with the people they love and their gifts tend to be well chosen, often something of quality that will still be in use in twenty years. They make beautiful, comfortable spaces almost without trying. And they have a calm about them that settles a room. People breathe out around a Taurus.

Challenges

The shadow of Taurus is resistance to change. The steadiness that makes them so dependable can harden into something immovable, holding on to jobs, possessions, habits and relationships long after they have stopped doing any good. A Taurus can dig in simply because a position has been taken, and refuse to look at new evidence that would actually help them.

The love of comfort has its own shadow. It can tip into collecting things as a stand in for closeness, or into a self indulgence that avoids anything uncomfortable. There is a possessive streak, with money and property and with people, and it usually comes from a fear of loss rather than from meanness. Taurus can hold a grudge for a very long time and polish it like a stone.

The work is to notice the difference between holding firm and holding on. Taurus already knows how to stay. The lesson is learning when to let go, and trusting that it can rebuild if it has to. It always can.

In love and friendship

Taurus is slow to fall and then falls all the way. It does not do casual romance well and does not really see the point of it. What it wants is a partner to build a life with, someone who values the same steady, everyday love it offers: the cooked meal, the comfortable home, the small rituals that turn two people into a household. Physical affection matters enormously. Touch is how Taurus says most of what it means.

The trouble spots are jealousy and control. A Taurus who feels insecure can go quiet and resentful, or can try to hold the partner a little too tightly. Learning to trust, and to let the other person have their own life, is the growth here. As a friend, Taurus is the one who has known you for thirty years and never once let you down, and who will tell you plainly when you are being an idiot.

At work

Taurus does well anywhere that offers stability, clear expectations and results you can see. Finance, property, building, agriculture, the skilled trades, anything involving the creation or care of physical things. The eye for quality makes them good in food, hospitality, design and gardens, and the patience makes them excellent at craft.

They want a structured workplace with a reliable employer, fair pay and recognition for the work. They are not built for constant change or for aggressive sales environments, and they can struggle in industries that reinvent themselves every eighteen months. Put a Taurus in charge of resources or people and leave them to it. They will still be there, doing it well, long after the restructure has come and gone.

Taurus as a Moon sign

With the Moon in Taurus, the feelings move slowly and run deep. A Taurus Moon does not fall in love in an afternoon and does not fall out of it in an afternoon either. Change costs this Moon more than it costs most people, and that is worth respecting rather than arguing with. What makes it feel safe is tangible: good food, a comfortable bed, familiar surroundings, routines, and people who will still be there tomorrow. Beauty is emotional food for a Taurus Moon, and ugly surroundings wear it down. The shadow is a quiet stubbornness, and a tendency to grip what it loves. The work is learning to change without breaking, and giving yourself the time your feelings actually need.

Taurus as a Rising sign

With Taurus rising, people meet someone calm, unhurried and pleasant to be around, often with a strong, settled physical presence and a good voice. Whatever the Sun is doing underneath, the first impression is steady. One caution. The Rising sign needs your birth time to within about fifteen minutes, because the Ascendant moves into a new sign roughly every two hours. "Some time in the morning" will not do it. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart.

The season of Taurus

In the northern hemisphere Taurus is the heart of spring, when what the equinox started has taken root and the whole countryside is growing. In Perth it is the heart of autumn. The first real rain arrives, the ground softens and the evenings turn cool enough for a fire. Both are seasons of settling in, and I think that suits the sign very well. Taurus is the point in the year where you stop starting and begin tending.

Across the traditions

In the tarot, Taurus belongs to The Hierophant, the card of tradition, teaching and the structures that pass knowledge from one generation to the next, which is what Taurus does with everything it values. Its element is earth and its mode is fixed. Each of those has its own page in The Library, and the links beside this page take you to them. The Rashis pages in the Vedic Astrology section give you the sidereal view of the same part of the sky.
