Western Astrology
Libra
The Sun is in Libra from about 23 September to 22 October. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so anyone born within a day of either end should check their actual chart rather than take the date on trust.
Libra is an air sign, the cardinal one, and it is ruled by Venus. Air gives it a mind that lives in ideas and conversation. Cardinal gives it the urge to start things, which surprises people who think of Libra as passive. Venus gives it the love of beauty, harmony and other people.
The nature of Libra
Libra sees both sides. Give a Libra an argument and they will show you the merit in the opposing view before you have finished making your own, and they will do it without any wish to score a point. The sign is built to find the fair middle, and it does this so instinctively that it often does not know it is doing it.
Harmony is a need for Libra, the way order is a need for Virgo. A Libra in a room full of tension feels it in the body, and will set about smoothing it before anyone has asked. Beauty matters in the same way. A Libra is fed by a well made room, a good meal that also looks good, music, clothes that fit. People call it vanity. I call it the Venus rulership doing what Venus does.
The symbol is the scales, the only one of the twelve that is not a living thing. I have always thought that was a clue. Libra is less about what it is than about what it weighs, and the weighing is the point.
Strengths
Fairness, grace, intelligence and a real interest in people. The Libra ability to hold two opposing views without needing to crush one makes this the natural mediator and negotiator of the zodiac. A Libra can analyse a knotty situation with clarity and still remember that there are humans inside it.
The sense of justice is strong and not at all soft. A Libra will speak up for the underdog even when it costs them socially, and that surprises people who have only seen the charming side. The social gift is real too. A Libra makes people feel heard, handles delicate moments with tact and brings a bit of elegance to the ordinary.
Because Libra is cardinal, it also starts things, usually things that involve bringing people together. The partnership, the committee, the dinner party, the peace talks. Libra convenes.
Challenges
Indecision. The same mind that sees every side cannot always land on one, and a Libra can sit between two options long after everyone else has gone home. People who need a firm call from a Libra get frustrated. The Libra gets frustrated with itself.
The deeper difficulty is self erasure in the name of peace. A Libra can suppress its own needs and opinions so thoroughly to keep things pleasant that it ends up not knowing what it wants. The front stays easygoing. Underneath, a list of unspoken frustrations grows. Conflict is avoided so hard that people learn they can take advantage, and sometimes do. There is also a pull towards being liked over being truthful, which can fill a life with pleasant relationships that lack depth.
Framed kindly, this is a sign that has to learn its own needs count as one of the sides being weighed. Once it does, the scales actually balance.
In love and friendship
Libra is a romantic in the old sense. Courtship matters, the art of connection matters, and a Libra gives steadily and loyally to the people it loves. This is a sign that comes into its fullness in partnership, and most Libras know it.
The risk is disappearing into the other person. A Libra can absorb a partner's tastes, opinions and friends so completely that when a relationship ends they are not sure who is left. The good Libra partnership is with someone who makes them think, who values the same care they bring, and who understands that a Libra needs both the couple and a wider circle of friends to be well.
As a friend, Libra is the one who remembers how you like your coffee and who will tell you, gently, when you are being unfair.
At work
Libra does well wherever people need to be brought together or something needs to be made beautiful or fair. Law, mediation, counselling, design, diplomacy, human resources, anything that turns on reading a room. A Libra needs a workplace with some grace to it. Crude, chaotic or cutthroat environments wear this sign down faster than most.
Libra is least effective when asked to make a cold decision with no thought for who it affects, and most effective in a team culture that values its input. Give a Libra a dispute to settle and stand back.
Libra as a Moon sign
The Moon in a chart is your emotional life, what you need to feel safe. A Libra Moon feels through relationship. It knows its own feelings best in the presence of another person, and it makes its choices by weighing who they will affect. What makes this Moon feel safe is harmony in the house and the room. Raised voices, even between other people, settle into it as stress, and many Libra Moons become the family peacemaker young because the alternative is sitting with the tension. The shadow is deferring until resentment builds, and difficulty being alone. The growth is to name what you want out loud and to find yourself when nobody else is in the room.
Libra as a Rising sign
The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it describes how you meet the world and how people first see you. Libra Rising comes across as pleasant, polished and agreeable. People find you easy to be around and often assume you are more relaxed about things than you are. There is usually a care taken with appearance that is noticed.
The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs your birth time to within about fifteen minutes. A rough guess is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart.
The season of Libra
The Sun enters Libra at the equinox, the moment day and night come closest to equal, which suits the scales nicely. In the north it is the start of autumn. Here in Perth it is the start of spring proper, the wildflowers at their best and the weather finally deciding to be kind. The daily post "The spring equinox" covers what the equinox actually is, so I will not repeat it here, and the Libra New Moon has its own post, "The new moon in Libra".
Across the traditions
In the tarot, Libra belongs to Justice, the figure with the sword in one hand and the scales in the other, which tells you the fairness has an edge to it. Libra is an air sign in the cardinal mode. The Rashis pages in the Vedic Astrology section give the sidereal view, where the dates and sometimes the sign itself are different.
When did you last keep the peace at the cost of saying what you actually thought, and was the peace worth it?
