Leo is a fire sign, the fixed one, and it is ruled by the Sun. That is a tidy way of saying everything you need to know before we start. Fire gives it warmth and appetite. Fixed gives it staying power. The Sun gives it the habit of being the centre of whatever is going on.

The nature of Leo

Leo walks into a room and the room notices. Sometimes the Leo has done nothing at all to cause this. It is simply the quality of the energy, and most Leos learn young that attention arrives whether they ask for it or not.

Underneath the presence is a real generosity. A Leo gives time, money, affection and praise with both hands, and gives it because giving feels good, not because a ledger is being kept. Loyalty runs deep in this sign. Once a Leo has decided you are one of theirs, you will have to work quite hard to lose them.

The fixed quality shows in how a Leo commits. Where Aries lights the match and wanders off, Leo stays and tends the fire. The flame does not flicker with every passing wind. It burns steadily, and that steadiness is one of the things people lean on without quite realising they are doing it.

In my experience the mistake people make with Leo is to read the confidence as the whole story. It is the front of the house. The rooms behind it are warmer and more tender than the front suggests.

Strengths

Confidence, warmth, creativity and courage. The Leo courage is a particular kind. Aries courage often comes from not having looked at the risk. Leo courage comes from a settled belief that whatever happens, the Leo will cope and recover. That belief is contagious, which is why Leos make natural leaders and good teachers. People do things they did not think they could do because a Leo believed they could.

Creativity in Leo is wider than painting or music, though plenty of Leos do both. It is a way of treating life as something to be made rather than endured. A Leo will turn a Tuesday night dinner into an occasion. A Leo will remember your birthday and mark it properly. There is a playfulness here that often lasts a lifetime, and a capacity for joy that is unguarded and unironic.

Leo also follows through. The fixed nature means that when something matters to a Leo, the detail gets attended to and the promise gets kept.

Challenges

Pride. There is no way around that word with this sign. The Leo need for appreciation is real, and when the appreciation does not come, the Leo can withdraw and sulk, or push harder for the spotlight in ways that wear people out. The generosity can quietly turn into a trade: I give to you, and in return you adore me. When the adoration is taken for granted the resentment arrives.

Leo struggles to receive help and to admit weakness. Both feel like cracks in the armour. Criticism, however fair, lands hard, and the Leo that cannot hear it stops growing. At its worst the shadow is vanity, melodrama and a conviction that the Leo way is the only way.

I would frame all of this kindly. The pride is a cover for a soft centre. Most of the Leo shadow eases once the Leo learns that their worth does not go up and down with the size of the applause. That is the work of this sign, and it is good work.

In love and friendship

A Leo in love holds nothing back. They fall completely, give their whole heart, and expect the same loyalty in return. Romance is marked and celebrated. Anniversaries get remembered. The gestures are large because the feeling is large.

The difficulty comes when a partner has a flat week. Leo can take an ordinary bad mood personally and pull affection back when it is most needed. Leos also find quiet partners hard to read, and can mistake a quieter love for a smaller one. Learning that love expressed differently is still love is a big part of Leo growing up.

As a friend, Leo is fierce. If you are in trouble, your Leo friend turns up. They may make a bit of a production of it, but they turn up.

At work

Leo wants to be seen doing good work, and does its best work when the credit is real. Teaching, performance, management, sales, anything that involves standing in front of people and moving them, these all suit the sign. Leos lead by example and by believing in their people out loud.

Put a Leo behind the scenes with no credit and they will leave. Treat a Leo well and they will stay through hard times that would see others out the door. The thing a Leo manager has to learn is to hand praise down the line as freely as they would like to receive it.

Leo as a Moon sign

The Moon in a chart is your emotional life, what you need to feel safe. A Leo Moon feels in bright colours. When this Moon loves, it loves with the whole chest, and when it is hurt, you will know. What a Leo Moon needs most is to be seen and told. The people who love a Leo Moon have to say so, often, and mean it. Left unseen, this Moon goes flat and resentful, because warm recognition is food for it rather than a treat. It also needs somewhere to put its creative fire. A Leo Moon without an outlet tends to make drama where art should have gone.

Leo as a Rising sign

The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes how you meet the world and how the world first sees you. Leo Rising arrives with presence. People assume confidence and warmth before you have said a word, and often assume you are more extroverted than you feel inside. There is usually something about the hair or the bearing that people remember.

One rule I hold to. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs your birth time to within about fifteen minutes. "About 2 am" is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart.

The season of Leo

The Sun passes through Leo at the height of the northern summer, which is where the sign gets its heat in the old stories. Here in Perth it is the other way around. Leo season is the back half of winter, some of the wettest weeks of the year, and the wattle is just starting to think about it. I find the contrast useful. Leo is the fire you keep burning when the sky does not help you. The daily post "The season of Leo begins" marks the Sun's arrival each year.

Across the traditions

In the tarot, Leo belongs to Strength, the woman with her hand on the lion's jaw, which is about as plain a picture of this sign's work as you could ask for. Leo is a fire sign in the fixed mode. The Rashis pages in the Vedic Astrology section give the sidereal view, where the dates and sometimes the sign itself are different.
