Leo in Vedic Astrology
Simha is the Sanskrit name for Leo, the lion, the fifth rashi of the sidereal zodiac. The Sun rules it in Jyotish as in the West, so a Leo Sun is the Sun in its own home and a Leo Moon is the Moon lit from within by solar warmth.
If your Western chart gave you a Virgo Moon or a Virgo Sun, the sidereal zodiac quite likely moves it back one sign into Leo. The Sidereal and Tropical page explains the 24 degree gap. I have met more than one careful, modest Western Virgo who read their sidereal Leo and finally understood why they minded so much about being overlooked. The Moon sign comes first in Jyotish, so I start there.
Your sidereal Moon in Leo
Your feelings run warm and they take up space. You have a big inner life, and it shows. When joy arrives it radiates. When hurt lands, the people near you feel that too.
What you need is recognition, warmth and dignity. You need to feel that you matter, and not in a vain way, in the ordinary way that any living thing needs to feel valued. When your dignity is respected you flourish. When it is slighted the wound goes deeper than less proud Moons would understand, and it lingers longer than it should.
You love generously. When you give your heart it is wholehearted and unrationed, and the people who receive it feel fully received in a way more reserved Moons cannot manage. Your loyalty has weight. The marriages, friendships and family bonds of a Leo Moon tend to be substantial and long.
Your mind files experience as story. Events are remembered as chapters about who you are, what this meant about you, what that revealed. It makes your memory coherent and rich, and it means a slight to your identity gets filed under the same heading as the good chapters and is just as hard to shift.
You express what you feel. Feelings come out of you in words, in gestures, in your face and your posture, and you are readable to anyone paying attention, which is both a gift and an exposure. Attention energises you and being ignored depletes you. That is how this Moon is built. The growing up is in learning to ask for attention plainly rather than manoeuvring for it.
Three things keep this Moon well. Appreciation, regular acknowledgement from the people in your life, because being taken for granted erodes you slowly. A creative outlet, even a small one, cooking for people, singing in the car, dressing the house, because a life with nothing creative in it starves a Leo Moon. And pride in what you do, work and home and relationships you can be pleased with, because living in an arrangement that embarrasses you wears on you more than it would on most.
The shadow is pride that cannot admit error. The dignity that protects your core can harden into a refusal to apologise or to consider that you were wrong. The mature Leo Moon has learned that an apology rightly given confirms dignity. A second shadow is attention seeking that tips into drama when recognition does not come, which exhausts everyone and rarely produces the connection you actually wanted. A third is emotional size that crowds other people out of the room, and honouring the smaller scale of other temperaments is part of maturity here.
In relationship you are warm, demonstrative and loyal, and you want a partner who notices you, says so, and does not punish you for taking up space. At work you are the one who lifts the mood and the one people look to when something needs to be fronted. You do your worst work where you are invisible and your best where your name is on it.
Your sidereal Sun in Leo
The sidereal Sun is the purpose underneath the personality, and in Leo the Sun is at home, so this is the most solar of all the solar placements.
You are here to carry a particular light. You are meant to be distinctive and visible and to contribute what only you can contribute. From outside it can look like vanity. It is purpose. The Sun at the centre of the system does not apologise for its position, and at the level of purpose neither do you. You know who you are through what you make, who you lead and what you leave behind, and a culture of false modesty starves you.
People experience you as warm. You raise the temperature of a room, give attention generously, celebrate other people openly, and leave them feeling more themselves. You are expressive, your voice and your face and your home all carry your signature, and you lead, often without having meant to, because situations that need someone to step forward keep finding you.
Your path is creative output sustained over decades, a body of work with your mark on it rather than one bright early piece. Your path is leadership at whatever scale life hands you, thousands or a family of four, the scale matters less than accepting responsibility for the outcome when others cannot. And your path is warmth given freely. A world slightly better lit because you passed through it is the measure.
The shadow is pride swelling into vanity, where any room that does not orient around you feels like a failed room. A second is grandiosity, promising more than you can deliver. A third is contempt for quieter natures. The mature Leo Sun has found humility without losing dignity, and that is harder than it sounds.
The Sun and the nakshatras of Leo
The Sun is Surya in Jyotish, counted among the malefics in the classical sense, which means hot and demanding. In Leo it rules its own sign, so the solar qualities of radiance, centrality and creative fire run undiluted. The Grahas page covers the Sun in full.
Three nakshatras fall within sidereal Leo. Magha opens the sign, Purva Phalguni takes the middle, and the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni sits in the last few degrees before Virgo. Each has its own page in The Nakshatras. If your Moon is in Leo, find out which of the three it sits in, because the nakshatra is the detail I read before anything else.
Across the traditions
The Western Leo page in The Signs is the pair of this one. The Western sign is counted from the solstice and describes the high heat of a season, the sidereal sign is counted from the stars, and they describe the same lion from different vantage points. Most people with a sidereal Leo Moon were told they had a Virgo Moon, and the Moon in the Signs page gives that Western reading. Both belong in the picture, and in my readings they sit side by side.
When did you last apologise without defending yourself first?
