It is the first of a pair. Uttara Phalguni, the next nakshatra along, completes what this one begins, and the two share a symbol between them.

Deity, symbol and meaning

The deity of Purva Phalguni is Bhaga, the god of good fortune, prosperity and happiness in marriage. Bhaga is the one who hands out the share of good things that is yours.

Its symbol is the front legs of a bed, or a hammock. Rest, pleasure, the place you lie down with someone you love.

The meaning follows. Purva Phalguni is the nakshatra of enjoyment. Romance, celebration, creative play, and the dignity of rest. Yes, dignity. This placement knows that a life with no pleasure in it is not a well lived life, whatever the hard workers say.

The core signature

A Purva Phalguni Moon understands enjoyment properly. Rest is not laziness to you. Romance and celebration are part of a good life. You knew that before anyone taught you.

Your temperament is warm and generous. You like giving: gifts, attention, affection, a party for no reason. There is nothing strategic in it. It comes from a feeling of plenty inside you.

You also have a natural artistic sense. You may never pick up a brush, but it shows in how you dress, how you set a table, how you arrange a room, how you tell a story. Your presence is itself a kind of art, and people enjoy being near it.

The emotional life

Your feelings run warm and social. You come alive in good company, around a well laid table, in places where pleasure has been thought about. Isolation and austerity drain you faster than they drain the more monkish placements.

Love matters to you. Both the ordinary love between two people and the larger love affair with life itself. Your relationships tend to be where you do your growing.

And you need play. Adult life with no play in it feels like deprivation to you. One of the best things about this Moon is that it can take life seriously without taking it grimly.

Strengths

The first gift is the capacity for real enjoyment. Your pleasure in good food, good company and good love is catching. You remind the people around you that life is supposed to include joy, and most of them have forgotten.

The second is hospitality. The tables you host, the gatherings you create, the welcome you extend. People remember them for years. I have met a few of these Moons in my time and I can still tell you what they served.

The third is creative delight. What you make, whether it is a meal, a room, an event or a relationship, carries a grace that others notice.

This Moon needs beauty around it, creative expression of some kind, and rest. The hammock is not decoration. A life of unbroken work with no leisure in it burns a Purva Phalguni out faster than it burns out the harder placements.

Challenges

The shadow is indulgence that turns into numbness. Pleasure chased past the point of enjoying it becomes consumption, and consumption leaves you full and empty at the same time. A mature Purva Phalguni has found the line between savouring something and grabbing at it.

A second shadow is laziness dressed up as self care. The love of rest can slide into avoiding work that was actually yours to do. Knowing when to lie in the hammock and when to get out of it is the whole discipline of this placement.

The third is vanity. Too much attention to how you look, where you stand, who is admiring you. Enjoying being attractive is fine. Needing to be admired all the time is a hunger that nothing fills.

In love and work

In love, this is one of the most romantic Moons in the whole wheel. You are affectionate, attentive and generous, and you want the same back. You are also drawn to the courtship, the early glow, and you may find the settled years harder than the beginning. That is where the next nakshatra along has something to teach you.

In work, you need to be creating something that gives pleasure. Hospitality, design, performance, the arts, anything where delight is the product. You also need a workplace that is not ugly and colleagues who can laugh. A grey office with no windows is a slow punishment for this Moon.

Venus's influence

Venus, Shukra in Jyotish, is the planet of beauty, love, comfort and the arts. It is a benefic, one of the kindly planets, and it rules Taurus and Libra.

Under Venus, Purva Phalguni's enjoyment becomes refined. The good things are chosen with taste. Venus also gives this Moon its charm and its ease with people. The work of Venus here is to keep pleasure connected to love, because pleasure on its own goes stale and pleasure shared does not.

Across the traditions

Purva Phalguni sits in the heart of sidereal Leo. In the Western zodiac, which runs about 24 degrees ahead, the same stars fall in the middle stretch of Virgo. So most people with this nakshatra have a Western Moon in Virgo, which surprises them, because Virgo has a reputation for work and this Moon has a reputation for rest. Read both. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western view, and the two together describe someone who takes pleasure seriously and does it well.

When did you last rest without feeling you had to earn it first?
