Bharani is the second of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Aries, and it is ruled by Venus. If your Moon was there at birth, read on.

The deity and the symbol

Bharani belongs to Yama, the lord of death and of judgement, the one who decides what must be released and what goes on. Its symbol is the yoni, the womb, the gate through which life comes in and goes out. Put a death god, a birth symbol and Venus in the same room and you have one of the most charged nakshatras in the whole zodiac. Bharani is about the cycles of making and unmaking, desire and discipline, and the weight that comes with both.

The core signature

Your Moon lives at the thresholds. Births, deaths, endings, beginnings, the passage from one shape of life to another. These are your home ground. Some Bharani Moons work with them literally, in birth work, in palliative care, in the rites that mark a passage. Others work with them in therapy, in art, or in relationships that go deeper than most people are willing to go.

Your temperament is sensual and serious about it. This is the deeply feminine Venus nakshatra, and there is nothing dainty in it. Your capacity for pleasure is large, and you understand that desire has consequences. You do not treat passion as a hobby.

You have a strong sense of right and wrong. The Yama signature gives you an inner account book. You know what should be kept and what should be let go, and you can be an exacting judge of other people and a harsher one of yourself.

The emotional life

Your feelings are saturated. Joy goes all the way up and grief goes all the way down, and you do not do either by halves. This is why people feel your presence in a room before you have said anything.

You carry a great deal of creative power. It may come out as art, as children, as a business built from nothing, or as the whole of your romantic life. It needs somewhere to go. I have watched Bharani energy with no outlet turn in on itself and start pulling things down, and I have watched the same energy, given a channel, build something that lasts.

You feel the weight of choice. Deciding one thing closes another, and you know that what is released may be gone for good. That awareness runs under everything you do.

Strengths

You can stand at the great thresholds without flinching. Not many people can hold a room where someone is being born or someone is dying. You can, and that is rare work.

What you make has substance. Whether it is a painting, a child, a company or a marriage, it carries the mark of serious attention.

Your moral clarity is earned. You have seen what holds and what falls away, and when you pass that on, people listen.

Challenges

The shadow is passion misused. Compulsion dressed up as desire, creativity that only destroys, relationships entered for the intensity rather than for the person. The same current that makes Bharani work so powerful does real damage when it runs without awareness.

The second challenge is harshness. Yama's severity turned on yourself or on other people can become cruelty. Mercy, practised deliberately, is the counterweight, and it does not come naturally to this nakshatra.

The third is the wish to control the passages you witness. People who work with birth, death and transformation can slide into believing every outcome is theirs to steer. A mature Bharani has learned that witnessing and releasing are the job, and that not every door is yours to open or close.

In love and work

In love you want the whole of someone. Surface connection leaves you hungry, and you need at least one relationship where the full range of you can be met and matched. You are loyal, intense and not easy, and the right partner knows that the intensity is the point.

At work you are drawn to anything that deals with real stakes. Midwifery, nursing, grief work, psychotherapy, serious art, running your own enterprise. You bring discipline when you choose to, and that discipline is what keeps the passion productive. A structured practice of some kind, whether creative, moral or spiritual, is the thing that holds the Bharani current on the rails.

The ruler's influence

Venus rules Bharani, and Venus is the planet of what we love and what we find beautiful. Here it is Venus with its sleeves rolled up. The love is physical, the beauty is in the raw fact of life coming and going, and the pleasure is taken seriously. Venus also makes the beginning of a Bharani life a long one in dasha terms, because anyone born with the Moon here starts in a Venus period, the longest of the nine, which The Dashas page explains.

Across the traditions

Bharani sits in sidereal Aries, so the Aries in Vedic Astrology page on The Rashis is its home sign. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which puts this same stretch of sky in Western Taurus, so most Bharani Moons have a Western Moon in Taurus. The Moon in the Signs page gives that reading, and the two together, the fire of sidereal Aries and the earth of tropical Taurus, say more about you than either does alone.

What are you holding on to that has already finished?
