Western Astrology
Sagittarius
The archer. The one with a bag already packed, a question already asked, and a firm belief that whatever is over the next hill will be worth the walk.
The Sun is in Sagittarius from about 22 November to 21 December. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so if your birthday sits within a day of either end, check your actual chart before you claim the sign.
Sagittarius is a fire sign, the third and last of the three, and its mode is mutable, which means it carries fire's energy with a loose grip and a willingness to change direction. Its ruler is Jupiter, the largest planet in the sky and the one astrology gives to growth, belief and good fortune. The Elements and Modes page explains what fire and mutable mean in a chart before you learn anything else about a sign.
The nature of Sagittarius
A Sagittarius wants to know why. Not in the way Virgo wants to know how, or Scorpio wants to know what is hidden. Sagittarius wants the big answer, the one that explains the whole picture, and it will travel a long way, in the body or in the mind, to find it.
There is a hopefulness in this sign that is hard to dent. I have watched Sagittarians lose a job, a house and a partner in the same year and still be the one at the table saying it will work out. Mostly it does. The sign stays young, too. A Sagittarius at seventy still asks the questions it asked at seventeen.
Strengths
The gift of this sign is reach. A Sagittarius sees the bigger picture when everyone else is arguing about the corner of it, and can describe that picture in a way that makes other people want to go there too. That makes the sign a natural teacher, because it loves the subject and wants you to love it as well.
Sagittarians say what they mean. There is no angle, no game, no reading between the lines required. People find that restful once they get used to it.
They are generous to a fault, with time, money, knowledge and encouragement, and they do not keep a ledger. Jupiter has a reputation for luck, and the people it rules tend to live up to it, partly because they are always moving and a moving target meets more doors.
Challenges
The shadow of all that reach is the follow through. A Sagittarius commits in a rush of enthusiasm, means every word of it, and then finds the ordinary work of keeping the promise far less interesting than making it. Over time that costs credibility, and the sign is often puzzled when people stop taking its yes at face value.
Straight talk tips into tactlessness. The Sagittarian says the true thing in the room and only afterwards notices the face of the person it landed on.
Restlessness is the deeper piece of work. This sign can leave a relationship, a job or a city at exactly the point where it was about to become meaningful, because something new caught the light. Excess belongs here too, in food, drink and plans, along with a habit of using the next adventure to avoid sitting with a hard feeling. There is also a preachy streak, which sits oddly on a sign that claims to love questions.
None of that is a sentence. It is a mirror. The Sagittarius who learns that depth comes from staying, and that commitment is a kind of freedom rather than the end of it, keeps every bit of the reach and adds something to stand on.
In love and friendship
A Sagittarius needs room. Freedom is not up for negotiation, and that applies to the inner life as much as to the weekends away. The partner who tries to shrink that room will lose the Sagittarian, slowly at first and then all at once.
What this sign wants is a companion for the road: someone with their own passions, their own curiosity and a sense of humour that matches. Sagittarius cannot love someone who needs it for all their meaning. It loves best when both people are whole and choosing to walk together.
As a friend, a Sagittarius is the one who turns a quiet Tuesday into a story you will tell for years. Jealousy is foreign to it, and it will tell you so plainly.
At work
Sagittarius does well wherever the work means something larger than the pay. Teaching, travel, publishing, law, philosophy, ministry and anything that widens how people see the world all suit it. Put a Sagittarius in a job that repeats the same task in the same way every day and watch the light go out of it.
It leads by making people believe something is possible. It is less good at managing the details once they believe it, and the wise Sagittarian hires a Virgo or a Capricorn for that and thanks them often.
Sagittarius as a Moon sign
The Moon is your inner weather, what you need to feel safe and how you respond before you have thought about it. With the Moon in Sagittarius, what you need is meaning and movement. A routine that never changes, a relationship with no growth in it, a job with no purpose behind it, these feel like suffocation even when they look fine from outside. Your emotional life leans towards hope the way a plant leans towards a window. The shadow is moving on to the next thing before you have fully felt this one, and calling grief a lesson before you have grieved. A Sagittarius Moon does its best work when it builds a practice of sometimes staying put. The Moon in the Signs page covers all twelve Moon signs.
Sagittarius as a Rising sign
Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it describes the face you show the world and the way you set out. Sagittarius Rising arrives with a grin and a question. People read you as open, friendly, a bit larger than life, and often funnier than you intend. You tend to look for the exit in any room that feels small. One caution, and it is a firm one: the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs a birth time accurate to within about fifteen minutes. If all you have is "sometime in the evening", a chart built on a guess is a different chart, and the Rising sign in it is not yours yet.
The season of Sagittarius
The Sun moves through Sagittarius in the last weeks before the December solstice. In the northern hemisphere that is late autumn turning to winter, the darkening weeks before the shortest day. Here in Perth, in the south, it is late spring tipping into summer, the days stretching out towards the longest one of the year and the city starting to smell of sunscreen and cut grass. The Week Ahead posts each Monday carry what the sky is doing in any given week of the season.
Across the traditions
In the tarot, Sagittarius belongs to Temperance, card 14 of the Major Arcana, the angel pouring water between two cups and finding the blend. It is a good match for a sign that spends its life mixing the far away with the here and now. Sagittarius is fire and mutable, and Jupiter is its ruler. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view of this sign, which places the dates differently. The links beside this page take you to the card and to Jupiter's own page.
