Its name means the brilliant one, or the picture. It sits at the very centre of the twenty seven, and I have always thought that fitting for the nakshatra of design.

Deity, symbol and meaning

The deity of Chitra is Vishwakarma, also called Tvastar, the architect and artisan of the gods. The one who builds their palaces and forges their weapons. Whatever the gods need made, he makes it, and he makes it well.

Its symbol is a brilliant jewel, or a perfect pearl. Something that catches the light and was shaped to.

The meaning is form. Chitra is the nakshatra of design, of the eye for structure and proportion, of making things that work and shine at the same time.

The core signature

A Chitra Moon sees form. You think in structure, composition and proportion, whether your material is paint, buildings, music, words, a room, a business or a relationship. You have an instinct for how a thing should be put together so that it works and so that it is beautiful.

You also tend to stand out. Whether or not you work at your appearance, people notice you. There is a natural presentation skill in this placement and a visibility that comes with it. That is part of the design, though it can become a vanity.

And your standards are high. Beauty matters to you and ugliness bothers you more than you can easily explain to people who do not feel it. It shows in your choices about where you live, what you do and who you spend time with.

The emotional life

Your feelings arrive as pictures. You often understand your own state through an image: this mood looks like a certain weather, this relationship looks like a certain building. Visual thinking is how you process, and once you know that, you can use it.

You take pride in quality. The things you make, the life you build, the way you present yourself. You want them to be well designed. Shoddy work is painful to you in a way that more indifferent placements never quite understand.

You can be competitive, especially about the look of things. Chitra wants to be the one whose work people notice. Channelled well, that produces excellence. Channelled badly, it produces a running comparison with everyone else in the room.

Strengths

The first gift is the ability to make beauty. The home you arrange, the image you create, the event you plan, the product you design. People remember them. That is a real contribution to the world, and the world is short of it.

The second is design at the level of whole systems. You see how an organisation, a building or a relationship should be structured. The capacity to hold an entire form in your mind is rarer than most people think.

The third is personal elegance. The way you dress, move, speak and hold a space. Others notice it and some of them copy it. You show by example that an ordinary life can be artful.

This Moon needs a creative outlet of some kind, surroundings that do not offend the eye, and to be seen for what it brings. Investing in beauty is maintenance for a Chitra Moon.

Challenges

The shadow is vanity. The pleasure of being seen can turn into the need to be seen, and the need bends the whole life around it. A mature Chitra has found the kind of dignity that does not depend on anyone looking.

A second shadow is a harsh eye. The discrimination that makes your work good can turn cruel when it is pointed at other people's choices, other people's homes, other people's clothes. Not everyone was given your eye, and most of them are doing their best.

The third is surface over substance. Attention to form can become preoccupation with appearance at the expense of what the form was meant to hold. In my experience the Chitra Moons who last are the ones who made sure the inside matched the outside.

In love and work

In love, you are drawn to beauty and you offer it in return. You want a partner you find attractive and a shared life that looks and feels well made. You are generous with style and attention. Watch for judging a partner by appearance, and for the competitive streak turning a relationship into a performance for an audience that is not there.

In work, you belong anywhere form matters. Architecture, design, the visual arts, fashion, photography, landscape, interiors, branding, and also the structural design of organisations and systems. You need recognition for the distinctive thing you bring. A workplace that flattens everyone into the same shape will make you miserable quickly.

Mars's influence

Mars, Mangala in Jyotish, is the planet of energy, drive and the will to act. It rules Aries and Scorpio. The classical texts count it among the malefics, which in plain language means it works hard and sometimes roughly.

Under Mars, Chitra's eye for beauty has force behind it. It is the drive to build them, to cut the stone, to finish the work. Mars gives this Moon its competitiveness and its courage, and it also brings the sharp edge that needs watching. The architect of the gods also forged their weapons.

Across the traditions

Chitra straddles sidereal Virgo and Libra, the craftsperson and the aesthete. In the Western zodiac, about 24 degrees ahead, the same stretch of sky falls across the second half of Libra and the very first degree of Scorpio. So nearly everyone with this nakshatra has a Western Moon in Libra, and the Libra Moon's love of beauty and balance sits very comfortably with the Vedic reading. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western view.
