The Sun is in Aquarius from about 20 January to 18 February. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so if your birthday sits within a day of either end, check your actual chart before you claim the sign.

Aquarius is an air sign, the third and last of the three, and its mode is fixed, which means it holds its ideas with a firm grip once it has them. Its modern ruler is Uranus, the planet of sudden change, invention and the breaking of moulds. Its traditional ruler, from before Uranus was found in 1781, is Saturn, and you can still see Saturn in the sign's stubbornness and its love of a well built system. I read both. The Elements and Modes page explains what air and fixed mean in a chart before you learn anything else about a sign.

The nature of Aquarius

Despite the name and the picture, Aquarius is not a water sign. It is air, and the water it pours is knowledge, poured out for everyone.

An Aquarius thinks in systems. Where another sign sees a person with a problem, Aquarius sees the structure that produced the problem and wants to fix the structure. It cares about humanity in the large, even when it is hopeless at remembering a birthday.

There is an otherness to the sign. Aquarians do not quite fit the mould they were handed, and somewhere along the way most of them stop trying to and make peace with being different. People around an Aquarius start wondering whether the drum they march to is really their own.

Strengths

The gift of this sign is the mind. An Aquarius takes in complicated information fast and sees the shape of it when others are still sorting the pieces. It can imagine what does not yet exist and then start building it.

Aquarians are loyal in a way that surprises people who mistook the cool surface for not caring. Once you are in the circle you are in it for life. They put truth above social niceties, which makes them a relief in any room thick with pretence. And they are independent to the bone. An Aquarius does not need your approval to be who it is, and that freedom is catching.

Challenges

The shadow of all that cool clarity is distance. An Aquarius can stand so far back from a feeling, examining it, that the people who love it feel locked outside a glass door. It understands its emotions perfectly well. Having them is the harder part.

Fixed air sets like concrete. Once an Aquarius has decided what is true, evidence to the contrary tends to bounce off. The sign can love its principles more than the people in front of it, so busy with how the world should work that it misses how the person at the kitchen table is actually doing. A streak of superiority lives here too.

The deeper piece is loneliness. The aloofness is often a guard over a fear of real intimacy, and the independence an Aquarius prizes can leave it more alone than it ever intended.

This is a mirror, not a diagnosis. The Aquarius who learns that being moved by a feeling is not a failure of intelligence, and that the better world it wants is built one person at a time, keeps the whole brilliant mind and gains a heart it can actually use.

In love and friendship

Aquarius falls in love with a mind first. Friendship and conversation matter at least as much as passion, and the partner who cannot hold up their end of a two in the morning argument about how the universe works will not last.

It needs a partner with a full life of their own, who respects its need for space and does not read a night alone as rejection. It is drawn to the unusual, the person who thinks sideways and challenges its ideas, and it does best where it can be entirely itself without performing a romantic script it never believed in.

The growing edge is presence. Aquarius has to learn that commitment does not cost it its independence, and that letting someone all the way in is the most radical thing it will ever do.

As a friend, an Aquarius collects people from every walk of life, accepts every one of them exactly as they are, and keeps them for decades.

At work

Aquarius belongs in technology, science, environmental work, social change, community organisations and anywhere a good mind can be set on a broken system. It needs work that lines up with its values, and a job that feels compromised, or that exists only to make money, grinds it down.

It wants a workplace that welcomes the odd idea and lets it decide how to do its own job. Rules that cannot explain themselves drive it out the door. It leads well when the team shares a vision, and less well when the job is managing individual people or playing the politics.

Aquarius as a Moon sign

The Moon is your inner weather, what you need to feel safe and how you respond before you have thought about it. With the Moon in Aquarius, you feel through ideas. An emotion passes through a layer of thinking before it fully lands, so you often understand what you feel before you feel it, and others can mistake that for not feeling at all. What makes you safe is freedom: room to think your own thoughts, to come and go, to be alone when you need to be. Your inner life reaches out to causes and communities, and the personal is sometimes less natural territory than the universal. Your gift is originality. Your shadow is theorising about your grief instead of grieving, and anything that brings you back into the body, a walk, a swim, a dance, is medicine for this Moon. The Moon in the Signs page covers all twelve Moon signs.

Aquarius as a Rising sign

Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it describes the face you show the world and the way you set out. Aquarius Rising comes across as friendly, a little detached, interested in everybody and belonging to nobody. People read you as unusual before they can say why, and they tend to bring you their ideas rather than their feelings. One caution, and it is a firm one: the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs a birth time accurate to within about fifteen minutes. "Sometime in the morning" is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart, and the Rising sign in it may not be yours.

The season of Aquarius

The Sun moves through Aquarius in the dead middle of the northern winter, the cold weeks after the solstice when the light is coming back but the ground does not know it yet. Here in Perth, in the south, it is the hottest stretch of the year, the runs of days over thirty five and the sea breeze arriving like a rescue. The water bearer's sign landing on our thirstiest weeks has a certain logic to it. The Week Ahead posts each Monday carry what the sky is doing in any given week of the season.

Across the traditions

In the tarot, Aquarius belongs to The Star, card 17 of the Major Arcana, a figure kneeling at the water's edge pouring from two jugs under a sky full of light. It is the card of hope after the hard part, and of giving freely without keeping count, which is the water bearer at its best. Aquarius is air and fixed. Uranus is its ruler, with Saturn as the traditional ruler. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view of this sign, which places the dates differently. The links beside this page take you to the card and to the pages for Uranus and Saturn.
