The Dog
The one who stays. When everyone else has drifted off to something newer, the Dog is still there, still keeping the promise it made years ago.
Recent years: 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and 2018, with the next Dog year beginning in 2030. The Chinese year begins at Chinese New Year, never on 1 January, and New Year falls between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born in January or the first weeks of February of a Dog year you may be a Rooster, and if you were born in those weeks of the year after you may be a Dog rather than a Pig. Check the New Year date for your own year before you read on. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page explains the rule.
The Dog's own element is Earth and its polarity is yang, the outward and active side of the pair. Eleventh of the twelve animals, it belongs to the group I call the champions.
The nature of the Dog
The Dog is loyalty with a conscience. It values faithfulness above nearly everything and it expects faithfulness back. It has a strong sense of what is fair, felt in the body rather than argued in the head, and when it sees unfairness, particularly aimed at someone it loves, something in it stands up.
Dogs are protective. The children, the old people, the friend going through a bad season, the animal nobody else noticed. The Dog is never the bystander. A Dog often knows within minutes whether someone can be trusted, and it is right more often than it is wrong.
Dogs take commitment seriously, which is why they are slow to make one.
Strengths
Reliability first. People lean on a Dog and the Dog holds. Its word is good, its promises survive hard weather, and it does not switch sides when the wind changes. Then fairness, a plain refusal to tolerate cheating or exploitation, and the courage to say so when silence would be easier.
Add the steady presence. Those around a Dog feel safe, and that safety is a gift most Dogs never realise they are giving. In my experience the Dog is the animal most likely to be taken for granted, precisely because it is always there.
Challenges
Watchfulness is the Dog's gift and its burden. Turned up too far it becomes suspicion, the constant scanning for betrayal that can create the very distance it fears. Protectiveness, turned up too far, becomes control: restricting the people it loves for their own good, whether or not they asked.
Strong convictions can set hard. The Dog can be quick to judge a different set of values as a worse set, and its bluntness, meant kindly, lands without the kindness showing. The saddest Dog shadow is staying too long. Loyalty keeps a Dog in a situation that is hurting it, hoping that faithfulness alone will fix the other person.
Framed kindly, the work is trust. Trusting that people may make their own choices and their own mistakes, and trusting that the Dog deserves care as much as it gives it.
In love and friendship
A Dog loves wholeheartedly and for keeps. Its love looks like showing up, remembering, defending, staying. It needs a partner who can match that devotion and who will never test it with deceit, because a Dog that has been betrayed does not forget.
Partners find the Dog steadfast and sometimes a little heavy. The Dog can also carry old wounds from early let downs into new relationships, where they do not belong, and learning to trust where trust has been earned is a lifelong piece of work. Give a Dog a partner who shares its values and honours its loyalty, and you will see one of the most lasting loves in the zodiac.
At work
Purpose, principle and people worth protecting. Dogs do well in law, policing, the military, security, social work, health, public service, anywhere the work serves something larger than a pay cheque. They need clear ethics around them and they wilt where moral compromise is part of the job description.
Dog leadership is built on trust rather than charisma. Colleagues follow because the Dog is reliable, fair and on their side. Ambition, for a Dog, means mattering more than it means climbing.
The five Dogs
Each animal meets each element once in sixty years, and the year element colours the Dog's own Earth. Work it from the last digit of the year, as The Five Elements page explains.
The Wood Dog, 1934 and 1994, is the most cooperative and the easiest to get along with, a team player with the Dog's conscience intact. The Fire Dog, 1946 and 2006, is the most outgoing and the most passionate about its causes. The Earth Dog, 1958 and 2018, is Earth on Earth, the most grounded, patient and dependable of them all. The Metal Dog, 1970 and 2030, is the most principled and the strictest, with a very clear line between right and wrong. The Water Dog, 1982, is the most intuitive and the most flexible, the Dog that can bend without breaking faith.
Friends and rivals
The Dog's two friends are the Tiger and the Horse, four years either side of it. Together they make the champions: brave, direct, loyal to a cause, impatient with pretence. The Dog's one clash is the Dragon, six years away. The Dragon dazzles and the Dog is not dazzled, and the Dragon finds that hard to forgive. A clash is friction, never a curse, and friction can teach. The old texts also pair the Dog with the Rabbit as secret friends. The friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac post works through all the groupings.
The Dog as a month and a day animal
The Dog month runs from about 8 October to about 6 November, and the boundary can move by a day with the year. As a month animal the Dog describes your private self. Whatever your year animal shows the world, inside you take right and wrong seriously, you keep faith with the people you have chosen, and you have a quiet compass that registers fairness and betrayal with unusual clarity. The Month of the Dog post reads the live sky for that month each year, and The Twelve Months page is the reference.
The Dog day cannot be read off a calendar. The day animal runs on a sixty day cycle that ignores the calendar month, so it needs a table or a calculator, and my readings compute it. As a day animal the Dog is your truest self: the faithful one underneath every role, the one who notices and responds, whose promise means something. The Day Animals page has more.
Across the traditions
The month of the Dog overlaps most with the second half of Libra season and the first half of Scorpio season, sitting almost evenly across the boundary between them, so a Dog month birth may carry either Sun sign. The Western Astrology section and The Signs page cover that sky, and the Vedic Astrology section will add the sidereal view when it opens. Different sky, different question, and I read them side by side.
