The Tiger
The third animal, and the one nobody argues with. Courage, heat and a heart that is nearly always in the right place, even when the timing is not.
Recent years: 2010 and 2022 were Tiger years, and the next one is 2034. Before that, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962 and 1950.
The year animal begins at Chinese New Year, which lands somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, never on 1 January. The Fire Tiger year of 1986 ran right through to 28 January 1987, because the Rabbit year did not begin until 29 January, so someone born on 20 January 1987 is a Fire Tiger, whatever the calendar on the wall said. If your birthday is in January or early February, check the New Year date for your year. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page shows you how.
The Tiger's own element is Wood and its polarity is yang. Wood is the element of growth, the young tree pushing up through whatever is in the way, and yang is the outward, active charge. That is the Tiger in one line: growth with force behind it. The year element layers on top, which is what the five versions below are about.
The nature of the Tiger
A Tiger walks into a room and the room knows. Tigers have a presence they did not ask for and could not switch off if they tried.
They are brave. They go where others will not, physically, emotionally and in argument, and they say the thing everyone else was thinking and nobody would say. They live by conviction and they will not trim their values to fit in. They feel everything at full volume and show it, which some people find thrilling and some find a lot.
Underneath the heat is a protector. A Tiger will stand between you and the thing that is coming for you, and it will take on an injustice simply because it is there. In my experience Tigers are at their very best when somebody weaker needs them.
Strengths
Courage, obviously, and the energy to back it. A Tiger has reserves that carry it through things that would flatten most people. It leads by example rather than instruction, and people follow because the life it is living looks worth living.
Its passion is catching. Commit a Tiger to a cause or a person and everything around it lifts. It is principled, it sees the new way through rather than the approved one, and its loyalty, once given, is total. Earn a Tiger's trust and you have a bodyguard for life.
Challenges
The great struggle is impulse. A Tiger moves before it has planned, driven by heat rather than thought, and it does not love being told so. Advice lands badly. Independence can shade into refusing help it badly needs.
The intensity can flatten gentler souls, and the directness wounds more often than it means to. Patience is thin, and when things do not go to plan the Tiger gets short, or loud. Pride is a real weight: admitting a mistake feels like weakness, so it is avoided, and the mistake grows.
The quieter shadow is leaving. When the first fire goes out of a project or a person, the Tiger can walk, and the people left behind feel it. The work is restraint, and learning that the pause before the charge is not cowardice.
In love and friendship
A Tiger loves with the whole of itself. It is generous with time, energy and heart, fiercely protective, and it expects the same devotion back. It wants a partner who can meet its intensity and admire its boldness without asking it to be smaller.
Control is poison to it. Restrict a Tiger and you will get resentment and, eventually, an empty chair. Give it room inside the relationship and you get fierce loyalty and a life that is rarely dull. Partners who are emotionally distant will struggle. The ones who can hold the fire and still say what they need tend to be loved for life.
At work
Tigers want independence, action and a reason. They suit the uniformed services, emergency medicine, crisis work, starting a business, activism, the performing arts, anything where courage and quick decisions count and there is something to protect or champion.
They are good under pressure and good in front of people, and they build things from nothing. Rigid hierarchies, or jobs with no purpose beyond the pay, wear them out fast. They take the calculated risks others avoid, and more often than not the risk pays. Their ambition is about impact first, though the money usually follows.
The five Tigers
The year's element layers on top of the Tiger's own Wood. The Five Elements page explains how the two read together.
The Wood Tiger, born in 1974 or 2034, is doubly Wood, the most cooperative of the five and the best at bringing others along, a grower who can share the credit.
The Fire Tiger, 1926 or 1986, is the hottest, the most dramatic and the most generous, with Wood feeding Fire so that the energy almost never runs out, and the discipline sometimes does.
The Earth Tiger, 1938 or 1998, is the steadiest and the most practical, with Earth holding the Wood so the courage comes with a plan attached.
The Metal Tiger, 1950 or 2010, is the sharpest and the most competitive, with Metal cutting Wood, so the will is formidable and the edges can be too.
The Water Tiger, 1962 or 2022, is the calmest and the most perceptive, with Water feeding Wood and softening the roar into something that listens before it leaps.
Friends and rivals
The Tiger belongs with the Horse and the Dog, the group I call the champions. The three share heat, honour and a readiness to fight for what is right, and they understand each other at a glance.
Its clash is with the Monkey, six years across the circle. A clash is friction, never a curse. The Tiger charges and the Monkey dodges and laughs, and each can drive the other to distraction until they learn to enjoy the difference. The old texts also pair the Tiger quietly with the Pig as a secret friend. The post on the friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac works through the whole pattern.
The Tiger as a month and a day animal
The Tiger month runs from about 4 February to 5 March, give or take a day with the year, and carries Wood. It is the first month of the Chinese solar year, opening at the Start of Spring. Born in a Tiger month, your private self is awake: you want things, you form your own opinions whatever your outer behaviour says, and you are braver privately than you look. It puts grit under a gentle year animal and doubles the force of a bold one. The shadow is the reactive outburst that breaks what patience would have kept. The Twelve Months page covers all twelve.
As a day animal the Tiger is the core self, the one left when the performance stops. A Day Tiger is sovereign: its decisions are its own, constraint suffocates it, and when it finally moves it moves fast. The day animal runs on a sixty day cycle and cannot be read off a calendar, so it needs a calculator, and my readings include it. The Day Animals page has more.
Across the traditions
The month of the Tiger overlaps most with late Aquarius into Pisces season in the Western zodiac, which surprises people who expect the Tiger to land somewhere fiery. It is a different sky and a different question, and the Western Astrology section and The Signs page cover it. The Vedic Astrology section will give the sidereal view when it opens.
