Recent years: 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024, with 2036 to come. The Dragon year runs from Chinese New Year to the next Chinese New Year, never from 1 January, so a January or early February birth needs checking. The Dragon year of 2024 began on 10 February, which makes someone born on 3 February 2024 a Water Rabbit, not a Wood Dragon. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page explains the rule.

The Dragon is a yang animal and its own fixed element is Earth. That surprises people. They expect fire from a Dragon. The tradition gives it the Earth of spring, the soil that everything grows out of, and I think that is the whole point of the animal: a vision is only worth having if it can be built.

The nature of the Dragon

The Dragon sees further than most people and believes what it sees. It walks into a room and the room notices. Some of that is confidence and some of it is the permission the Dragon gives itself to think big where other people apologise for thinking at all.

In my experience the Dragon is the one at the table saying "why not" while everyone else is listing reasons. It is creative, original and allergic to settling. It expects a lot of itself, and it expects life to be large.

Underneath the magnificence there is often a quieter question that does not show on the outside. Do I deserve this? The Dragon carries both at once, the grand vision and the private doubt about its own legitimacy. Making peace between the two is the work of a Dragon life.

Strengths

Vision, first and always. The Dragon imagines what is not there yet and then has the nerve to go after it.

Courage. It goes where others hesitate and it tends to come back with something.

Generosity. For an animal with this much presence, the Dragon gives freely. It lifts people. A great many people will tell you a Dragon believed in them before they believed in themselves, and they are right.

Challenges

The shadow of the Dragon is the shadow of power. Confidence tips into arrogance. The Dragon decides its vision is the only one worth having and stops hearing anyone else's.

It takes on too much. The expansive spirit says yes to everything and then burns out spectacularly when the pace cannot be held. It follows inspiration without checking the practical ground, and its standards for itself and everyone around it can be impossible to meet.

The kindest thing I can say about all of this is that it is the same gift pointed the wrong way. The magnetism that bends a room toward the Dragon can be used to serve the room or to run it. The Dragon that learns to collaborate loses nothing of its size.

In love and friendship

The Dragon loves on a grand scale and expects to be met there. It wants a partner who can celebrate its brilliance without feeling smaller for it, and who has a life and ambitions of their own.

It is generous, devoted and capable of real tenderness. It also expects a fair amount of accommodation, and it struggles with a quiet or self effacing partner. Dragon relationships are rarely peaceful. They run to intensity, drama and change, and the Dragon needs someone who can ride that and still, when it matters, bring it back to earth.

With friends the Dragon is the one who shows up large: the big gesture, the unexpected kindness.

At work

The Dragon belongs in roles where it can lead, innovate and make a visible difference. Building something from an idea is what it is for. Entrepreneurs, directors, strategists, people in creative work and entertainment, anyone opening a new road.

It leads by inspiring rather than ordering. People follow a Dragon because they believe in where it is going. It struggles badly in a subordinate role or a tightly structured one, and it can lose interest once the exciting part is over and the detail begins. A Dragon with some discipline beside the inspiration is formidable. A Dragon without it starts a lot of things.

The five Dragons

Every animal meets each of the five elements once in sixty years, and the element colours the animal. The Five Elements page explains how the layering works.

The Wood Dragon, born in 1964 and 2024, grows its vision outward, generous and expansive, with a strong urge to build and to lead a team.

The Fire Dragon, born in 1976 and coming again in 2036, is the Dragon at full blaze: charismatic, driven, quick to act and quick to burn out.

The Earth Dragon, born in 1928 and 1988, is the most grounded of the five, and double Earth, which gives it patience and a head for what will actually work.

The Metal Dragon, born in 1940 and 2000, is the strong willed one, principled and unbending, with a vision it will defend to the end.

The Water Dragon, born in 1952 and 2012, is the diplomat of the family, more willing to listen and to wait, which makes its vision easier for other people to join.

Friends and rivals

The Dragon belongs with the Rat and the Monkey, the doers, the three animals four years apart who get things started and get them done. Those are its natural friends. Its clash is the Dog, six years away, which questions the Dragon's grand plans and asks who they are for. A clash is friction, not a curse, and I have watched some excellent partnerships built on exactly that friction. The old texts also pair the Dragon quietly with the Rooster. The post "The friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac" walks through all the groupings.

The Dragon as a month and a day animal

The Dragon month runs from about 5 April to about 4 May, with the boundary moving by a day depending on the year. The month pillar is your private self, and a Dragon month gives you an inner life that dreams at a scale you would not say out loud. The visions are big, the ideas never stop, and alongside them sits a private question about whether you are allowed to be this large. The Earth of the month is what lets the dreaming become building. The Twelve Months page covers all twelve.

The Dragon as a day animal is your truest self, the core under the masks, and it cannot be read off a calendar because the day cycle runs on sixty days. A Dragon day gives a person who, whatever they show the world, is built for something substantial. They inspire others almost without trying, they need a big enough challenge to use what they have, and their work is to stay through the slow middle years that every large thing demands. The Day Animals page has more.

Across the traditions

The Dragon month sits almost evenly across the end of Aries season and the start of Taurus season, the Chinese solar months beginning near the middle of each Western sign. The Aries nerve to start and the Taurus patience to build both suit it. The Elements and Modes page explains the Western four elements, which do not map neatly onto the Chinese five, and The Signs page covers each sign. The Vedic Astrology section will give its own view when it opens.

What is the vision you have never said out loud, and what is the first small piece of ground it would need?
