The Rooster
The one who says it. Everybody in the room has noticed the problem, and the Rooster is the one who stands up and names it.
Recent years: 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 and 2017, with the next Rooster year beginning in 2029. The Chinese year begins at Chinese New Year, never on 1 January, and New Year falls between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born in January or the first weeks of February of a Rooster year you may be a Monkey, and if you were born in those weeks of the year after you may be a Rooster rather than a Dog. Check the New Year date for your own year before you read on. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page explains the rule.
The Rooster's own element is Metal and its polarity is yin, the inward and receptive side of the pair. Tenth of the twelve animals, it belongs to the group I call the thinkers.
The nature of the Rooster
The Rooster is standards walking around in a person. It knows what good looks like, it notices when good is absent, and it will tell you. There is no guile in it. A Rooster says what it means and assumes you would prefer that to the alternative.
Roosters are alert. They see the small thing out of place that everyone else walked past, and they are organised in a way that borders on a calling. Systems, lists, the right tool in the right drawer. Where a Monkey finds the window, a Rooster has already checked the door, twice.
It is also brave. The Rooster will say the unpopular true thing in a room full of people who would rather not hear it, and it will wear the cost.
Strengths
Integrity first. A Rooster's word holds, and its actions match what it says it believes. Then precision and follow through: the fifty small decisions nobody asked it to make, each one made properly, which is the whole difference between work that is adequate and work that lasts.
Add courage, ambition and a work ethic that most of the other animals find faintly alarming. Roosters lead by competence rather than charm, and people follow because the Rooster is usually right. In my experience a Rooster's loyalty is a quiet thing. It shows up as being there, again, on time.
Challenges
The great Rooster difficulty is truth without kindness. The Rooster thinks it is being helpful. The person on the receiving end thinks they have been pecked. Perfectionism is the second difficulty, a standard nobody can reach, applied to others and most savagely to the self.
Strong opinions can harden into certainty, and certainty into the belief that the Rooster's way is the only way. And here is the Rooster's own secret: for all its bluntness, it is thin skinned. It takes a suggestion as an attack and hears criticism far louder than it ever delivers it.
Framed kindly, every one of these is a strength turned up too far. The work is mercy. The same eye that sees the fault can learn to see the effort beside it.
In love and friendship
A Rooster loves seriously. It commits, it shows up, it fixes things. Its love language is reliability, and it expects the same level of care in return. When a partner falls short the Rooster goes quiet and keeps score, and the partner finds out months later that a ledger has been running.
What a Rooster needs is someone who can take plain speaking without bleeding, and who is willing to say what they expect out loud. Roosters do poorly with the indirect and the easily wounded. The relationship may be short on romance in the soft focus sense, but it is long on substance, and the Rooster who learns to deliver its truth gently is a partner for life.
At work
Responsibility, precision, clear expectations. Roosters flourish in management, engineering, accounting, medicine, law, the military and police, anywhere accuracy matters and accountability is real. They want authority to put their systems in place, and they want the result to be noticed.
They struggle where the brief is vague, the standards keep shifting or the culture rewards charm over competence. The Rooster's challenge at work is the one it faces everywhere: to raise the standard without demoralising the people who have to meet it.
The five Roosters
Each animal meets each element once in sixty years, and the year element colours the Rooster's own Metal. Work it from the last digit of the year, as The Five Elements page explains.
The Wood Rooster, 1945 and 2005, is the most flexible and the most willing to work in a team. The Fire Rooster, 1957 and 2017, is the showiest and the most driven, the Rooster that actually crows. The Earth Rooster, 1969 and 2029, is practical and patient, the quiet achiever of the five. The Metal Rooster, 1981, is Metal on Metal, exacting, principled and very hard to move. The Water Rooster, 1933 and 1993, is the most thoughtful and the easiest to talk to, with the sharp edges softened by Water.
Friends and rivals
The Rooster's two friends are the Ox and the Snake, four years either side of it. Together they make the thinkers: careful, deliberate, slow to commit and immovable once they have. The Rooster's one clash is the Rabbit, six years away. The Rabbit feels every blunt word as a wound and the Rooster cannot see what the fuss is about. A clash is friction, never a curse. The old texts also pair the Rooster with the Dragon as secret friends. The friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac post works through all the groupings.
The Rooster as a month and a day animal
The Rooster month runs from about 8 September to about 7 October, and the boundary can move by a day with the year. As a month animal the Rooster describes your private self. Whatever your year animal shows the world, inside you have standards, you think in categories and systems, and chaos disturbs you more than you let on. Your private work is craft. The Month of the Rooster post reads the live sky for that month each year, and The Twelve Months page is the reference.
The Rooster day cannot be read off a calendar. The day animal runs on a sixty day cycle that ignores the calendar month, so it needs a table or a calculator, and my readings compute it. As a day animal the Rooster is your truest self: the one who does the job properly when nobody is watching, who keeps the promise, whose inside and outside match. The Day Animals page has more.
Across the traditions
The month of the Rooster overlaps most with the second half of Virgo season and the first half of Libra season, sitting almost evenly across the boundary between them, so a Rooster month birth may carry either Sun sign. The Western Astrology section and The Signs page cover that sky, and the Vedic Astrology section will add the sidereal view when it opens. Different sky, different question, and I read them side by side.
Who in your life deserves to hear what you have noticed about them that is going right?
