That animal is real and it is a fine place to start. It is also about a third of the picture.

I read Chinese astrology through the Four Pillars tradition, which the Chinese call Ba Zi, and I use three of the four. Your birth year gives you an animal and an element. So does your birth month. So does your birth day. Three animals, three elements, and the person sits somewhere in the middle of them.

The system I use

The twelve animals run in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. I say Goat rather than Sheep or Ram, and Pig rather than Boar, and the pages here do the same. Each animal is paired with one of five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water, and each of those is either yin or yang. Twelve animals and five elements give sixty combinations, which is why the full cycle of years takes sixty years to come round.

The three pillars I work with each answer a different question. The Year Pillar is how the world sees you, the animal everybody knows. The Month Pillar is your private self, how you operate when nobody is watching. The Day Pillar is your truest self, the one underneath the masks. In my experience the day animal is where a reading gets interesting, because almost nobody knows theirs and it very often explains the bit of them that the year animal never did.

A calendar before a horoscope

Chinese astrology is a calendar first. The year is the weather everyone lives in. 2026 is a Fire Horse year, and that describes the mood of the year for all of us, the way a hot dry summer describes the mood of a town. Your own animal is your character inside that weather. Nothing in it is a sentence. A Rat in a Horse year is not doomed and a Horse in a Horse year has not won anything. They are simply standing in different weather.

One rule trips up more people than any other. The Chinese year begins at Chinese New Year, which falls somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, never on 1 January. If you were born in January or early February, there is a real chance your animal is the one before the one you have been told.

How this section is laid out

The pages run in the order I would teach them.

Learning Chinese Astrology is where to begin: what the system is, what it is for and how to find your way into it. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year explains why the year moves and sorts out the January and February question properly. The Five Elements and Yin and Yang are the two layers that sit on top of every animal, and they are worth reading before you read about yourself.

Then the three pillars. Your Year, Month and Day Pillars shows how the three fit together and what each one is for. The Twelve Months walks through the month animals in calendar order, starting with the Tiger month in early February. The Day Animals takes each of the twelve as a day animal, the quiet core most people never meet.

The Animals gives each of the twelve its own page, the Rat through to the Pig, with its nature, its strengths, its five element versions, its friends and its one clash, and how it reads as a month and a day animal as well as a year. Use those pages the way you would a good field guide, once you know which animals you are looking at.

The daily posts

The Chinese year runs through the daily posts all year. The Year of the Fire Horse post set the tone for 2026 when the Horse month arrived in June. The friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac post explains the four groups of three and the six clashes, and the pages here point to it rather than repeat it. The monthly series, The Month of the Goat, The Month of the Monkey, The Month of the Rooster and The Month of the Dog so far, reads the live sky each time the month animal changes, and The Twelve Months page is the reference it leans on. Every Monday, The Week Ahead carries a Chinese astrology line for all twelve animals.

Where to start

Find your year animal, and check it against the New Year date for your birth year if you were born before late February. Then work out your element from the last digit of the year. Read the page for your animal and notice what fits and what does not.

Then come back for your month and day. That is where you stop being a placemat and start being a chart.

You will be your own teacher. All I will do is help you remember what you already know.

If you would like your own chart read, my readings are here.
