Capricorn
The mountain goat. Head down, one sure foot after another, looking at a summit the rest of us cannot see yet and quietly certain of getting there.
The Sun is in Capricorn from about 22 December to 19 January. The boundary moves by a day either way depending on the year and where you were born, so if your birthday sits within a day of either end, check your actual chart before you claim the sign.
Capricorn is an earth sign, the third and last of the three, and its mode is cardinal, which means it begins things and takes charge of them. Its ruler is Saturn, the planet of time, structure, limits and earned authority. The Elements and Modes page explains what earth and cardinal mean in a chart before you learn anything else about a sign.
The nature of Capricorn
A Capricorn is building something. It may be a business, a family, a reputation or a body of work, and it may take forty years, and that is fine, because Capricorn thinks in decades where other signs think in weekends.
There is a respect in this sign for structure, for tradition and for the rules that hold a life together. Capricorn has worked out that the rules exist for a reason and that the people who ignore them tend to fall off the mountain.
Capricorns are often called old souls, and in my experience they arrive old and grow younger. The serious child who worried about the family becomes the sixty year old who finally takes up surfing.
Strengths
The gift of this sign is staying power. Where other signs tire and wander off, a Capricorn keeps going until the thing is done, and that alone puts it ahead of most of the field.
Capricorn judges people and situations well. Its realism lets it see a risk clearly without being frozen by it. When a Capricorn says it will do something, you can take that to the bank, and everyone who knows one knows that.
It thinks several moves ahead and plans for them. It leads through competence rather than charm, and people follow because it delivers. It can build something real from very little, and when everyone else is panicking, the Capricorn is the one quietly working out what to do next.
Challenges
The shadow of all that steadiness is coldness, or what looks like it. A Capricorn feels deeply and shows it carefully, and the people who love it can spend years wondering whether it loves them back. It does. It is just not fluent in saying so.
The climb can become the whole life. A Capricorn gets so fixed on the next ledge that it forgets to look around, and arrives at the top with a fine view and nobody to share it with. The sign likes order, and when life asks it to improvise, it can go rigid rather than bend. Trusting other people to do the work is hard, so it does everything itself and then wonders why it is so tired.
And there is a pessimism that dresses itself up as realism: the quiet certainty that the worst will happen and effort is pointless. That one is worth watching, because it can slide into a low heavy mood that has been there for years before anyone names it.
This is a piece of work, not a verdict. The Capricorn who learns that its worth was never in what it built, that being a beginner at something is allowed, and that a little play is a discipline rather than a weakness, keeps all the strength and loses the weight.
In love and friendship
Capricorn does not do casual. When it opens its heart it is already imagining the long haul, and it would rather wait for the right person than practise on the wrong ones.
It loves through reliability. It shows up, it handles what needs handling, it is there at three in the morning when it matters. Grand gestures are not its language. The partner who notices that the bins are always out and the car is always serviced will understand exactly what is being said.
What a Capricorn needs is someone with their own goals and their own backbone, who respects its need for privacy, and who can make it laugh and drag it away from the desk now and then. Learning to say the feeling out loud, more often than feels comfortable, is the growing edge in every Capricorn relationship I have seen.
As a friend, a Capricorn is the one you call when something has actually gone wrong. It will not flap.
At work
Capricorn is built for careers that reward patience and competence: management, finance, government, engineering, architecture, property, administration, and anything where authority is earned over time. It does well in traditional organisations with clear lines, and just as well running its own business, provided the business is meant to last.
It is least happy in chaos and in workplaces where politics beats merit. Give a Capricorn a clear goal and people who pull their weight, and then get out of the way.
Capricorn as a Moon sign
The Moon is your inner weather, what you need to feel safe and how you respond before you have thought about it. With the Moon in Capricorn, you feel privately and carefully. By the time you say anything about a feeling, you have usually already processed it and decided what to do. What makes you feel safe is competence and the knowledge that what needed doing has been done. Many Capricorn Moons were the serious child, responsible beyond their years, and carry a quiet belief that love must be earned through usefulness. Letting yourself be loved for simply existing is the deep work of this Moon. Your gift is steadiness: you are the one people call when it is serious. Your shadow is heaviness, and a practice of lightness is not optional. The Moon in the Signs page covers all twelve Moon signs.
Capricorn as a Rising sign
Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it describes the face you show the world and the way you set out. Capricorn Rising arrives composed and a little reserved. People read you as capable and trustworthy before you have said a word, and they hand you responsibility early. One caution, and it is a firm one: the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs a birth time accurate to within about fifteen minutes. "About 2 am" is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart, and the Rising sign in it may not be yours.
The season of Capricorn
The Sun enters Capricorn at the December solstice and stays through the turn of the year. In the northern hemisphere that is the heart of winter, the shortest day and the slow return of the light. Here in Perth, in the south, it is the opposite: the longest day, the start of real summer, Christmas on the beach and the heat settling in. Saturn's sign holding the summer solstice down here always strikes me as a decent joke. The post called The winter solstice covers what a solstice actually is, and the Week Ahead posts each Monday carry what the sky is doing in any given week of the season.
Across the traditions
In the tarot, Capricorn belongs to The Devil, card 15 of the Major Arcana, which sounds alarming until you look at the card properly: two figures with loose chains who could step away any time they chose. It is the card of the structures we build and then forget we built, which is Saturn's lesson exactly. Capricorn is earth and cardinal, and Saturn is its ruler. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view of this sign, which places the dates differently. The links beside this page take you to the card and to Saturn's own page.
What have you been climbing towards for so long that you have stopped asking whether you still want to arrive?
