Neptune
Neptune is the planet of the dream, and of the morning after the dream.
It was found in 1846, by arithmetic before anyone saw it, because Uranus was wandering off its predicted path and something unseen had to be pulling on it. A planet discovered by its invisible influence. You could not ask for a better introduction.
What Neptune is in you
Neptune is imagination, longing, compassion, spirit and the place where the edges of you go soft.
It describes what you idealise, where you are most easily inspired and, by the same door, where you are most easily fooled. Neptune is the mystic and the addict, the painter and the daydreamer, the person who feels the room before anyone has spoken. It dissolves boundaries. Whether that is a blessing or a mess depends on what you do with it.
In a chart I look at Neptune for where the longing lives. Everyone has somewhere they want the world to be more than it is. Neptune's sign tells you the shape of that wish; its house tells you where you keep looking for it. Strong Neptune people, with it on an angle or tight to a personal planet, are often artists, healers or carers, and nearly always more porous than is comfortable. The work with Neptune is to keep dreaming and learn the difference between a vision and a fog.
The cycle and the generation
Neptune takes about one hundred and sixty five years to go once around the zodiac, so it spends about fourteen years in each sign. Nobody lives through a full Neptune cycle. Most of us see it move through five or six signs in a lifetime.
Fourteen years in a sign means the Neptune sign belongs to a generation. Everyone born in that span shares it, and it reads as the collective dream your cohort grew up inside: what your whole generation was taught to long for, and later, what it was disappointed by. The house is the personal part. I say this because people take their Neptune sign as a private trait when it is closer to the weather of the years they were born in.
Neptune is retrograde for about five to six months of every year, so about four in ten of us carry it that way. Retrograde is apparent motion only; Earth passes the slower planet and from here it seems to slide backwards. A retrograde Neptune in my experience reads as a dreamer who keeps the dream private, and who trusts an inner knowing over any teacher.
The sign Neptune rules
Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces. Jupiter is the traditional ruler, and I keep Jupiter in the picture when I read that sign. Neptune in Pisces is Neptune at home, and the generation now growing up carries it.
Neptune through the signs
In Aries, Neptune dreams of the hero. This generation inherits a picture of the lone actor who changes history by will, and its spiritual longing comes out as action rather than contemplation. In your own life you are most alive when moving for something larger than yourself, and most disillusioned when the cause proves hollow. The gift is action with conviction behind it.
In Taurus, Neptune dreams of beauty made solid. This cohort is shaped by the idea that the earth and the body are a spiritual path in their own right. In your own life you are most inspired by craft, gardens, food and the slow making of something lovely, and let down when wealth or beauty prove empty. The gift is turning an ordinary meal into something close to a ceremony.
In Gemini, Neptune dreams through words. This generation grows up believing that ideas can save, that the right book opens what was closed. In your own life a body of thought can feel like a doorway, and the letdown comes when the book that was going to change everything turns out to be ordinary. Reading, writing and teaching can be real spiritual disciplines, and also a way of avoiding practice.
In Cancer, Neptune dreams of home. This cohort carries a longing for the safe harbour, the homeland, the mother as she should have been, often because those things were lost or never quite there. In your own life you idealise family and place, and the disappointment comes when the home you return to is smaller than memory made it. The gift is feeling what others feel and making people safe.
In Leo, Neptune dreams of the radiant one. This generation is shaped by heroes of stage, screen and politics, and by the belief that one bright person can carry the meaning of an era. In your own life you are lifted by brilliance, your own and other people's, and let down when the admired figure proves smaller than the image. The gift is a presence that lifts the room.
In Virgo, Neptune dreams of healing. This cohort hopes that careful attention can mend what is broken, and grows up alongside waves of interest in health, food and the ethics of work. In your own life you are inspired by precise work done in real service, and disillusioned when the method you trusted failed the person it was meant to help. The gift is a presence that soothes and clarifies.
In Libra, Neptune dreams of perfect partnership. This generation is marked by romantic idealism and movements for fairness, and hopes that two people meeting can be a holy thing. In your own life you are inspired by relationships that feel like completion, and let down when a partner proves ordinary or fairness runs one way. The right ones become sacraments; the wrong ones teach you to tell projection from meeting.
In Scorpio, Neptune dreams in the dark. This cohort grows up as depth psychology and sexuality come into the open, and finds the holy in the places most people avoid. In your own life you are drawn below the surface, in intimacy, in therapy, in practice that does not flinch, and let down when the depth is theatre. The gift is going where others cannot and bringing something back.
In Sagittarius, Neptune dreams of far wisdom. This generation inherits the hope that traditions can be blended and that travel awakens, and grows up as the spiritual marketplace goes global. In your own life you fall for the framework that explains everything, the teacher who seems real, the country with the answers, and learn when each shows its limits. The gift is holding several traditions at once without forcing agreement.
In Capricorn, Neptune dreams of structures worth believing in. This cohort hopes that institutions and leaders can carry real purpose, and watches closely when they do not. In your own life you are most inspired when the work you are building serves something beyond your own success, and most disillusioned when authority proves corrupt or achievement delivers status without substance. The gift is building things that carry meaning.
In Aquarius, Neptune dreams of humanity joined up. This generation grows up sensing that the whole species might be connected and lifted by new ways of organising and communicating. In your own life you are inspired by movements and networks, by being part of something large with a principle at its centre, and let down when the community proves shallow. The gift is contributing to a collective waking up.
In Pisces, Neptune is at home and the dream has no edges. This cohort carries the most concentrated Neptune there is, arriving as mindfulness goes mainstream and collective grief and awakening run side by side. In your own life the boundary between ordinary and transcendent is thin, a gift and a hazard. Discipline turns this access into work that changes people. Without it the sea takes you.
Across the traditions
In the tarot, Neptune belongs to The Hanged Man, the figure suspended upside down by one foot, calm, seeing everything from the other way up. Neptune rules Pisces, whose card is The Moon. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you to them. Classical Vedic astrology does not use Neptune, and the Vedic Astrology section shows how that tradition reads the same longings through other means.
What have you wanted the world to be that it has not quite managed to be? Sit with the answer. That is your Neptune, and it is not wrong for wanting.
