The Hanged Man
Major Arcana, card 12. Astrology: the element of water, and Neptune.

Hanging still. The world seen upside down, and seen more clearly for it.
The picture
A man hangs upside down from a wooden beam shaped like a T, with leaves growing on it. He is tied by one foot. His other leg is bent behind his knee so the two legs make a shape like the number four, and his hands are behind his back. He wears a blue tunic and red leggings. Around his head is a golden halo, and his face is calm.
Upright
Look at his face. He is in no hurry and no distress. He has chosen to hang there, and the halo says he is seeing something the rest of us are missing.
When the Hanged Man turns up, things are on hold, and pushing will not move them. This is the pause between one chapter and the next. Water and Neptune go with this card, and both are soft, deep and slow. They ask you to stop swimming against the current and float for a while.
The gift is the new view. Hang upside down long enough and the whole world looks different. A problem you have been staring at for months can make sense in a moment once you stop trying to solve it the old way.
Reversed
Reversed, I read the Hanged Man as too much or too little. Too much is the pause that has become a habit, the waiting that turned into being stuck, or the martyr who keeps sacrificing and calls it patience. Too little is refusing to stop at all, wriggling on the rope, forcing a result the moment will not give.
It can also be blocked: the new view is there and you will not look at it. To tell which, ask how long you have been hanging. If it has been a very long time, the card asks you to cut yourself down and move. If you have been fighting every quiet moment, it asks you to go still and let the view turn over.
When it turns up
What would you see if you looked at your situation from the other way up?
