Scorpio is a water sign, the fixed one. Its modern ruler is Pluto, and its traditional ruler, the one astrologers used for two thousand years before Pluto was found, is Mars. I use both. Water gives Scorpio feeling that runs deep and private. Fixed gives it a grip that does not let go. Pluto gives it the business of death and rebirth, and Mars gives it the nerve to go through with it.

The nature of Scorpio

Scorpio sees under the surface. Whatever is being said in a room, a Scorpio is reading what is actually going on, and is usually right. This is the sign with the least patience for pretence in the whole zodiac. Small talk is tolerated. Dishonesty is not, and a Scorpio can smell it from the next room.

There is a magnetism to this sign that people feel before they can name it. It draws some people in and unsettles others, and Scorpio is generally fine with both outcomes. Underneath the still exterior the feeling is intense and constant. A Scorpio does not have shallow emotions. It has deep ones, kept behind a door, and the door opens for very few people.

The word I keep coming back to with Scorpio is transformation. This is the sign that goes down into the hard material of a life, grief, rage, desire, power, loss, and comes back up changed. Most Scorpios I have read for have remade themselves at least once already, and they know it.

Strengths

Loyalty, insight, determination and courage of a particular sort. Once a Scorpio commits to a person or a cause, the commitment is total. There is not much middle ground. The people a Scorpio loves get a protection that is close to fierce.

The insight into human nature is remarkable. A Scorpio reads motive and character with an accuracy that borders on uncomfortable, and rarely gets a person badly wrong. The determination is the fixed quality at work. Where other signs leave when a project or a relationship gets hard, Scorpio digs in, works on it and comes out the other side stronger.

The courage is the courage to look at the shadow, in themselves and in other people, without flinching. In a crisis, an illness, a death in the family, the Scorpio is the one who stays in the room. That is a rarer gift than it sounds.

Challenges

The intensity has a shadow, and the shadow has names: jealousy, possessiveness and control. A Scorpio can love someone so hard that the loved one starts to feel watched rather than cherished. The need to know everything can crowd out the trust that makes knowing unnecessary. Secrecy, which starts as self protection, can become isolation, and the Scorpio ends up longing for closeness behind walls it built itself.

Scorpio does not forget, and does not forgive easily. A hurt from year one can still be felt in year twenty. The same insight that reads people so well can be turned into a weapon, because a Scorpio knows exactly where it would hurt. The temper, when it finally comes, is rarely small.

Let me frame all of that as a mirror rather than a sentence. The grudge is carrying poison and waiting for the other person to die. The control is fear that love will leave if it is given room. The work of this sign, and it is real work, is to find out that letting go does not mean losing, and that being known fully is where the power actually lives.

In love and friendship

Scorpio plays for keeps. There are no casual relationships here, or not for long. A Scorpio wants a partner who can match the depth, who will go into the hard places with them, and who is brave enough to be fully known. Privacy matters at the same time. The Scorpio paradox is a longing to be seen completely by someone who also respects the locked rooms.

Physical closeness is important in this sign, and is how commitment is often expressed. Once trust is given, the Scorpio becomes your fiercest defender. The challenge in love is to loosen the grip a little and discover that a partner given freedom does not simply vanish.

As a friend, Scorpio has few close ones and keeps them for life. If you are one of them, you can tell a Scorpio anything and it will never be repeated.

At work

Scorpio belongs in work that reaches hidden truths or brings about real change. Psychology, counselling, investigation, research, surgery, finance, healing in all its forms. A Scorpio is drawn to roles with influence, and wants that influence so that something actually changes.

Routine bores this sign into the ground. Micromanagement is intolerable. What a Scorpio needs is autonomy, work that stretches both the mind and the feelings, and colleagues who are competent and straight. Give a Scorpio a problem nobody else wants to look at and they will come back with the answer.

Scorpio as a Moon sign

The Moon in a chart is your emotional life, what you need to feel safe. A Scorpio Moon feels everything all the way through, and feels what is underneath what is being said. What makes this Moon feel safe is truth. A half truth feels more dangerous to it than a hard truth, because the half truth means something is hidden, and hidden things register as threats. The old texts call the Moon in its fall here, meaning comfort and surface ease are harder to come by, and that is fair. The same difficulty is what gives this Moon its depth. The shadow is brooding, the long memory and going silent when hurt. The growth is to say what is happening inside, especially in the hard moments, to the few people who have earned it.

Scorpio as a Rising sign

The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it is how you meet the world and how the world first reads you. Scorpio Rising comes across as intense, private and watchful, with a gaze people remember. Others often assume you are harder to approach than you are, and some are a little wary without being able to say why.

The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs your birth time to within about fifteen minutes. "Late at night" is not good enough. A chart built on a guessed time is a different chart.

The season of Scorpio

The Sun is in Scorpio as the northern autumn deepens towards winter, the leaves down and the nights drawing in, which is where this sign picked up its association with endings. Here in Perth it is late spring. The days are warm, the wildflowers are finishing and summer is close enough to smell. I rather like Scorpio arriving in our spring. It reminds me that the sign is about what grows after the clearing, not just the clearing. The daily post "The season of Scorpio begins on Friday" marks one such arrival.

Across the traditions

In the tarot, Scorpio belongs to Death, card thirteen, which frightens people until they learn it is the card of the ending that makes room for the next thing. Scorpio is a water sign in the fixed mode. The Rashis pages in the Vedic Astrology section give the sidereal view, where the dates and sometimes the sign itself are different.

What have you held onto past the point it was serving you, and what might grow in the space if you let it go?
