Recent years: 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015, with 2027 next. The Goat year runs from Chinese New Year to the next Chinese New Year, never from 1 January, so a January or early February birth needs checking. The coming Goat year begins on 6 February 2027, so someone born on 1 February 2027 is a Fire Horse, not a Fire Goat. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page explains the rule.

Some books call this animal the Sheep and some the Ram. I say Goat, and so does my library. It is a yin animal and its own fixed element is Earth. Yin Earth is the garden soil, receptive and nurturing, the ground that holds what is planted in it and grows it slowly.

The nature of the Goat

The Goat is sensitive, creative and kind. It is tuned to the feelings around it the way other people are tuned to the weather, and it responds with real compassion rather than the performed kind. Its sensitivity is awareness, never weakness, though the Goat is often told otherwise and sometimes believes it.

It is drawn to beauty in every form: art, music, gardens, a well set table, a kind conversation. It lives a little in imagination and possibility and it is happiest when it can make something, whether that is a painting, a meal or a peaceful home. Making is how the Goat breathes.

Strengths

Compassion. The Goat perceives what other people feel and responds in a way that heals. Its presence calms anxious people and makes it safe for them to say what hurts.

Creativity with depth. Goat work carries meaning. It touches people.

Intuition and loyalty. It senses things before they are obvious, and it gives steady care to the people it loves for as long as they need it.

Humility and a quiet optimism. The Goat does not need the spotlight. It believes, underneath everything, that the world is basically good, and in my experience it is very hard to argue a Goat out of that. I have stopped trying.

Challenges

The shadow of the Goat is leaning. It can depend on other people for its sense of worth and let kind hearted habits be taken advantage of over and over. It absorbs other people's moods and loses track of which feelings are its own.

Worry can take over. Decisions get put off for fear of the wrong one, conflict gets avoided until resentment has quietly piled up, and the creative work stays in the drawer because someone might judge it. When life gets hard the Goat may drift away into daydream or whatever else dulls the edges.

Every one of these is tenderness without a boundary. The Goat that learns to say no, to ask for what it needs and to protect its own peace loses none of its softness. It just stops bleeding.

In love and friendship

The Goat loves tenderly and wants real emotional connection with someone it can be open with. It shows love in small gestures and close attention: the remembered birthday, the right word at the right moment, the cup of tea that appears before you asked.

It needs reassurance and consistent affection, and it wilts without them. It struggles with a partner who is cold, critical or emotionally absent, and it does best with someone warm, creative and willing to talk about how they feel. Family matters enormously to a Goat. Its one caution in love is staying too long in something that has ended, out of fear of being alone.

At work

The Goat belongs in work that lets it create or care. Art, music, writing, design, counselling, social work, teaching, conservation, anything that leaves the world a little kinder or more beautiful than it found it.

It needs a supportive, cooperative workplace and does poorly in a harsh, cut throat or creatively cramped one. It is not a natural self promoter and the business side of creative work bores it. Its ambition is gentle: it hopes the work brings someone joy, comfort or beauty. That is a perfectly good ambition and the world needs more of it.

The five Goats

Every animal meets each of the five elements once in sixty years, and the element colours the animal. The Five Elements page explains how the layering works.

The Wood Goat, born in 1955 and 2015, is the most generous and trusting of the five, kind to a fault and happiest with a crowd of people to look after.

The Fire Goat, born in 1967 and coming in 2027, is the braver, livelier Goat, more willing to speak up and more dramatic in its creativity.

The Earth Goat, born in 1979, is double Earth, the most practical and reliable, steady with money and devoted to home.

The Metal Goat, born in 1991, has a firmer spine than the others, strong taste and strong principles behind the gentle manner.

The Water Goat, born in 2003, is the most adaptable and the most easily swayed, charming, intuitive and in need of a few good anchors.

Friends and rivals

The Goat belongs with the Rabbit and the Pig, the peacemakers, the three animals four years apart who would rather keep the peace than win the argument. Those are its natural friends. Its clash is the Ox, six years away, whose blunt practicality can feel to a Goat like being told to toughen up. A clash is friction, not a curse, and the Ox has a few things to teach the Goat about standing firm. The old texts also pair the Goat quietly with the Horse. The post "The friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac" walks through all the groupings.

The Goat as a month and a day animal

The Goat month runs from about 7 July to about 6 August, with the boundary moving by a day depending on the year. The month pillar is your private self, and a Goat month gives an inner life that is softer than the world you have had to adapt to. Compassion comes from a deep well, imagination runs all day, and love shows in a hundred small attentions. The yin Earth of the month lets you hold and tend what you are given. The private voice that questions your worth is not reliable, and mature Goat months learn not to obey it. The post "The Month of the Goat" reads the month as it comes round each July, and the Twelve Months page covers all twelve.

The Goat as a day animal is your truest self, the core under the masks, and it cannot be read off a calendar because the day cycle runs on sixty days. A Goat day gives a person who is soft in the best sense under whatever competent exterior they wear, who responds to beauty as if it were food, and who takes their time because the slower pace is producing depth. Their work is to stay present through conflict and to let the rich inner life become something real. The Day Animals page has more.

Across the traditions

The Goat month sits almost evenly across the end of Cancer season and the start of Leo season, the Chinese solar months beginning near the middle of each Western sign. The Cancer tenderness is pure Goat; the Leo confidence is the part it is here to borrow. The Elements and Modes page explains the Western four elements, which do not map neatly onto the Chinese five, and The Signs page covers each sign. The Vedic Astrology section will give its own view when it opens.
