Rohini
The garden. The nakshatra where things grow simply because you are standing near them.
Rohini is the fourth of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes of sidereal Taurus, and it is ruled by the Moon itself. In the old stories it is the Moon's favourite wife, the mansion where the Moon lingers, and the astrology agrees with the story. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so this is the Moon at its most comfortable.
The deity and the symbol
Rohini belongs to Brahma, the creator, sometimes named as Prajapati, the lord of all creatures. Its symbol is a chariot, or a banyan tree, the great spreading fig that shelters a whole village under one canopy. Both are images of abundance and of carrying. Rohini is associated with the waxing Moon, the half of the month when things visibly increase.
The core signature
Your Moon is fertile. That is the plainest way I can put it. Gardens grow under your hand, projects prosper under your attention, and people open up in your company. It is not a figure of speech. I have known Rohini Moons who could not keep a plant alive, but they were rare, and they usually had a houseful of thriving children or a business that would not stop growing to make up for it.
Your temperament is warm, sensual and in love with beauty. Food, music, touch, a well made room, a good bottle shared slowly. You enjoy the physical world without guilt, and that ease is a large part of why people like being near you.
You have charisma, and you did not ask for it. People are drawn to you and cannot always say why. Sometimes the attention is more than you wanted. It arrives anyway.
The emotional life
Your feelings run deep and steady. You are hard to knock off balance, and your emotional floor is more settled than most placements can manage. In a crisis other people lean on you, often without noticing they are doing it.
You know what you want. Your desires are clear, and because your wants and your abilities tend to line up, you usually get there. A Rohini life is visibly shaped by what its owner loved and went after.
You are loyal. Marriages, friendships and family bonds tend to last a long time around you, and the staying is a pleasure. You are not looking for the exit.
Strengths
You make things flourish. Children, gardens, homes, enterprises, friendships. Whatever you tend, grows. This is the generative gift of the whole zodiac and you have it in full measure.
You are warm without working at it. People leave your kitchen table feeling more alive than when they sat down.
You are an anchor. Your settled strength holds the people around you who have less of it, and you hold it without drama.
Challenges
The shadow is stubbornness. Roots are wonderful until the ground changes, and a Rohini Moon can refuse to move long after moving was the right thing to do. Relationships and situations you love can outlast their healthy form because letting go feels like a betrayal of the love.
The second challenge is possessiveness. What you love, you want to hold, and holding can slide into control. The mature Rohini has learned that real love includes letting what you love stay free, and that is a hard lesson for this nakshatra.
The third is too much of a good thing. The capacity for pleasure can tip past enjoyment into consumption. Food, wine, comfort and spending become a way of numbing rather than nourishing once the line is crossed, and you are the only one who can see where the line is.
In love and work
In love you are affectionate, physical and in it for the long run. You want a home that feels like a home and a partner who will still be there in thirty years, and you will do a great deal of patient work to make that happen. Your lesson in love is the open hand. Hold lightly and the person stays by choice.
At work you need something to grow. A business, a garden, a classroom, a family, a body of creative work. You also need beauty around you and regular contact with the earth. A life lived entirely under fluorescent light slowly drains a Rohini Moon, and a weekend in the garden refills it faster than any holiday.
The ruler's influence
The Moon rules Rohini, and the Moon rules the Moon's own home here, which is why this nakshatra is so often called the most fortunate of the 27 for the emotional life. The lunar quality doubles up: receptive, nurturing, cyclical, tidal. Anyone born with the Moon here starts the Vimshottari dasha in a Moon period of ten years, and The Dashas page explains how that works.
Across the traditions
Rohini sits in sidereal Taurus, so the Taurus in Vedic Astrology page on The Rashis is its home. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which puts this same stretch of sky in Western Gemini, so most Rohini Moons have a Western Moon in Gemini. That surprises people, because the Rohini character is so earthy, and it is a good example of why I read both zodiacs rather than choosing. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Gemini reading, and the Taurus page in The Signs gives the Western view of the sign Rohini lives in.
