The Rabbit
The fourth animal, and the one that gets underestimated most. Gentle on the outside, considerably tougher underneath, and reading the room before you have opened your mouth.
Recent years: 2011 and 2023 were Rabbit years, and the next one is 2035. Before that, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963 and 1951.
The year animal begins at Chinese New Year, which falls somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, never on 1 January. The Rabbit year of 1987 did not begin until 29 January, so someone born on 15 January 1987 is a Fire Tiger, the animal before, and not a Rabbit at all. If your birthday is in January or early February, check the New Year date for your year. The Chinese Calendar and the New Year page shows you how.
The Rabbit's own element is Wood and its polarity is yin. The Tiger has Wood too, but the Tiger's Wood is yang and grows straight up through whatever is in the way. The Rabbit's Wood is yin: it bends, finds the gap, and grows around the obstacle instead. Same element, very different plant. The year element layers on top, which is what the five versions below are about.
The nature of the Rabbit
A Rabbit feels the room. The mood between two people, the thing not being said, the atmosphere that changed when someone walked in: the Rabbit has it before anyone has spoken.
They are gentle, tactful and refined, and they like beauty, in a home, in a garden, in a sentence. They would rather have harmony than win. A Rabbit's calm is a choice, and under it is a sharp mind that thinks everything through before it speaks and a core that keeps going through things that would break louder animals.
People mistake the softness for the whole story. In my experience the Rabbit is the one still standing, gracefully, after the storm has passed and the shouting has stopped.
Strengths
Emotional intelligence, first. A Rabbit knows what you feel before you have found the words, and it answers with care. Its tact lets it say the hard thing gently, which makes it a natural mediator.
It is thoughtful and considerate, always aware of how an action will land on someone else. It has an artist's eye and brings beauty wherever it settles. Its loyalty is quiet and deep, and the people close to it are held by a hundred small attentions they may not notice until they are gone.
Challenges
The great struggle is worry. A Rabbit can spend a year fretting about a problem that never arrives. The gentleness can be read as passivity, and some people will take advantage of it. Decisions can stall while every option is weighed one more time, and the chance goes by.
Conflict is avoided, which keeps the peace today and lets the trouble grow for next year. The Rabbit puts everyone else's comfort first and forgets to ask for anything, and then wonders why it feels empty. Sensitivity can tip into taking everything to heart, and caution into a life that is safe and rather small. Perfectionism shows up as procrastination and a harsh inner voice.
The work is simple to say and hard to do: your needs count too. Say them.
In love and friendship
A Rabbit loves tenderly and wants to be understood. It remembers the small things, shows its care through gestures rather than speeches, and needs steady affection and reassurance in return. Without appreciation it wilts.
It is often the one everyone leans on, the emotional carer of the family, and it has to learn to receive as well as give or it runs dry. It wants a partner who is emotionally present, who can talk about what matters, and who does not drag it into constant noise or risk. Passion matters to a Rabbit, as closeness rather than drama. Treat its kindness as something precious and it will stay for life.
At work
Rabbits suit work with care or beauty in it: counselling, social work, teaching, human resources, design, the arts, writing, diplomacy, anything where understanding people or making something lovely is the point.
Their organising ability is better than anyone expects, including the Rabbit. They flourish in collaborative places where their diplomacy is valued and wither in harsh, cut throat ones. Their talents often go unrecognised because they will not advertise them. The ambition is for a good life and good work rather than the top of the ladder, and there is nothing wrong with that.
The five Rabbits
The year's element layers on top of the Rabbit's own Wood. The Five Elements page explains how the two read together.
The Wood Rabbit, born in 1975 or 2035, is doubly Wood, the most generous and the most easily swayed of the five, a grower who needs to learn to say no.
The Fire Rabbit, 1927 or 1987, is the warmest and the most outgoing, with Wood feeding Fire so that the usual reserve gives way to real charm and a quicker temper.
The Earth Rabbit, 1939 or 1999, is the most practical and grounded, with Earth steadying the Wood and giving the gentleness some useful backbone.
The Metal Rabbit, 1951 or 2011, is the most determined and the most private, with Metal cutting Wood, so there is more steel under the fur than anyone suspects.
The Water Rabbit, 1963 or 2023, is the most intuitive and the most easily hurt, with Water feeding Wood, deeply perceptive and in need of calm around it.
Friends and rivals
The Rabbit belongs with the Goat and the Pig, the group I call the peacemakers. The three share gentleness, feeling and a wish for everyone to come out of things well, and they are easy in each other's company.
Its clash is with the Rooster, six years across the circle. A clash is friction, never a curse. The Rooster says the blunt thing and the Rabbit flinches, and the two need patience to appreciate what the other is actually offering. The old texts also pair the Rabbit quietly with the Dog as a secret friend. The post on the friends and rivals of the Chinese zodiac works through the whole pattern.
The Rabbit as a month and a day animal
The Rabbit month runs from about 6 March to 4 April, give or take a day with the year, and carries Wood. Born in a Rabbit month, your private self is refined and sensitive to atmosphere: you notice how things look and feel, you prefer grace to contention, and ugliness in a room or a relationship registers as a kind of pain. It puts diplomatic wisdom under a forceful year animal and deepens the refinement of a gentle one. The shadow is swallowing the truth to keep the peace. The Twelve Months page covers all twelve.
As a day animal the Rabbit is the core self, the one left when the performance stops. A Day Rabbit is the sensitive intuitive: it reads people with real accuracy, it smooths tension by reflex, and it does its best work in calm places. The day animal runs on a sixty day cycle and cannot be read off a calendar, so it needs a calculator, and my readings include it. The Day Animals page has more.
Across the traditions
The month of the Rabbit overlaps most with late Pisces into Aries season in the Western zodiac, the turn of the Western year, which sits nicely with a Wood animal in its growing season. It is a different sky and a different question, and the Western Astrology section and The Signs page cover it. The Vedic Astrology section will give the sidereal view when it opens.
