What Mercury is in you

Mercury is how you think, how you learn, how you talk and how you listen. It is the speed and the shape of your mind: whether you reach a conclusion in a flash or over a month, whether you think in pictures or in lists, whether you say the thing or hint at it. It also covers the everyday traffic of a life, messages, errands, short trips, brothers and sisters, and how you handled school.

When I sit down with a chart, Mercury tells me how to talk to the person in front of me. A Capricorn Mercury wants the point and the plan. A Pisces Mercury wants the picture and will find the point on its own. I have learned to check it before I open my mouth.

Mercury never travels far from the Sun, never more than about twenty eight degrees from where we stand, so your Mercury is always in your Sun sign or one of the two signs either side of it. A Taurus Sun has Mercury in Aries, Taurus or Gemini and nowhere else. When your Mercury is in a different sign from your Sun, you think differently from the way you present, and people who only know your Sun sign will keep being surprised by you.

Mercury's cycle and retrograde

Mercury goes round the Sun in about 88 days, the quickest orbit of any planet. From here it swings out to one side of the Sun as an evening star, comes back past it, and swings out the other side as a morning star, over and over.

About three times a year, for about three weeks each time, Mercury appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Nothing in the sky has reversed. Mercury is on the inside track and moving faster than we are, and as it overtakes us it seems to slide back against the stars, the way a slower train seems to roll backwards when yours passes it. Retrograde is an effect of two speeds, and that is all it is.

What I do with a Mercury retrograde is slow down, reread before I send, back things up and expect a few crossed wires. I do not cancel my life for three weeks, and I would not suggest you do either. The posts Mercury in Libra and Mercury comes home to Virgo show how I write about Mercury on the move, and the Transits and Retrogrades page covers the shadow period and the rest of the mechanics.

About one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde. In my experience they think inwardly first and speak second, and often process something fully before they can say a word about it. It is a style of mind, and a good one.

Gemini, Virgo and Mercury

Mercury rules two signs. In Gemini it is the quick mind, the talker, the connector, the one who knows a bit about everything. In Virgo it is the careful mind, the editor, the sorter, the one who knows a great deal about one thing and can tell you where it is filed. Breadth and depth, from the same planet.

Opposite those two sit Sagittarius and Pisces, where Mercury is said to be in its detriment, and Pisces is also where it is in its fall. All that means is that Mercury's native clarity has to work against the grain of the sign. Those two Mercurys give us most of the preachers, the philosophers and the poets, and a world with only Virgo Mercurys in it would be very tidy and rather quiet.

Mercury through the signs

In Aries, Mercury thinks fast and says it straight. The position is reached before the room has finished gathering its thoughts. This is the person who finally says "let's just do it" and ends the dithering. It learns by doing. The gift is mental courage, naming the problem everyone else is dancing around. The shadow is words out before they have been checked. A half second pause is the whole discipline.

In Taurus, Mercury thinks slowly and for keeps. An idea is turned over and tested before it is adopted, and once a position is landed it stays landed. A concept is not real until it can be touched or done. The voice is often lovely, and many singers and broadcasters have it. The gift is judgement with weight behind it. The shadow is a position built of stone that no evidence can shift.

In Gemini, Mercury is at home and the mind runs at full speed. It holds three or four threads at once and connects things that had no business meeting. It can talk to a child, a tradesperson and a professor in one afternoon. The gift is quickness, and the words other people could not find. The shadow is skimming: a conversation that was interesting throughout and never went anywhere. Depth is a lifetime's practice.

In Cancer, Mercury thinks through feeling. Thought and emotion are braided together, and the memory is long: who said what, how they said it, what you were wearing. It thinks best about what it cares about. The gift is listening, and words that make people feel held. The shadow is speaking around a thing in the hope the other person will guess. Kind it already has. Clear is the thing to grow.

In Leo, Mercury thinks in stories. A situation arrives as a scene with a beginning, a hero and a moral, told with the hands moving. This is the Mercury of the teacher and the storyteller, whose version of events people remember. The gift is persuasion, and the metaphor that makes an idea land. The shadow is a conversation that keeps returning to the teller, and the difficulty of saying "I was wrong".

In Virgo, Mercury is in its other home, and quickness turns into precision. This mind notices the typo and the detail that does not fit, and moves straight from noticing to fixing. The written word is its gift: the instructions people actually use. The shadow is an inner critic that never calls a thing finished, and feedback leaking into relationships that did not ask for it. Good enough to send is a skill.

In Libra, Mercury thinks in company. It reaches its conclusions in dialogue and sees both sides of nearly everything, a strength in judgement and a trial at decision time. It waits for the elegant sentence rather than send the ugly one. The gift is holding two views without collapsing either. The shadow is endless deliberation, and a criticism softened so far that nobody realises it was offered. Courtesy with directness is the destination.

In Scorpio, Mercury thinks like a detective. It does not accept the stated version of events and asks what is being hidden. It says less than most Mercurys and is comfortable with the subjects most people avoid: money, sex, death, betrayal. The gift is seeing through surfaces. The shadow is suspicion that assumes the worst, and a mind that can dissect a partner with surgical accuracy in a fight. Accuracy is not permission.

In Sagittarius, Mercury thinks in broad strokes. It wants the pattern and the meaning rather than the exact fact, and it draws connections across travel, history, faith and science in one conversation. Mercury is in its detriment here, and the trade is depth for reach. The gift is making ideas feel alive to people who would have avoided them. The shadow is loose generalisation, and a conversation that has quietly become a lecture.

In Capricorn, Mercury thinks strategically. It assesses a situation by its long term consequences and will carry a hard question for months while the answer becomes clear. It sees limits clearly, its own and everyone else's, which looks like pessimism and is usually accuracy. The gift is planning several moves ahead. The shadow is coldness with people who need warmth, and "here is why that will not work" said once too often.

In Aquarius, Mercury thinks for itself. It arrives at its own conclusions by routes the mainstream has not found yet. It thinks in systems and lives a few years ahead of the conversation. The gift is originality, and the fresh angle that unsticks a discussion. The shadow is answering a feeling with a theory about the feeling, and mistaking difference for truth. Warmth is work this Mercury has to choose on purpose.

In Pisces, Mercury thinks in images. A reminds it of B, which feels like C, and the hunch is right more often than logic can explain. Mercury is in its fall here, and what makes it poor at logistics makes a poet. The gift is imagination, and an ear for what people mean under their words. The shadow is vagueness where clarity was due, and a memory that keeps the meaning and loses the date.

Reading your Mercury

The sign is the style of the mind. The house is where the mind is busiest. Mercury in the third house talks for a living or wishes it did; Mercury in the eighth would rather research than chat. The house needs a birth time to within about fifteen minutes, and a chart built on a guessed time is a different chart. The sign almost never depends on the time, because Mercury changes sign only every few weeks.

Then the aspects. Mercury in a tight square to Neptune can be a wonderful writer and a hopeless witness. Mercury conjunct Saturn thinks slowly and is very rarely wrong. The Aspects page covers how I weigh those, and The Houses page covers the twelve houses.

Across the traditions

In the tarot Mercury belongs to The Magician, card 1 of the Major Arcana, who stands with every tool on the table and the will to use them. The two signs it rules have their own cards: Gemini is The Lovers and Virgo is The Hermit. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you to them. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view.
