If your Western chart gave you a Taurus Moon or a Taurus Sun, there is a good chance the sidereal zodiac moves it back one sign into Aries. The Sidereal and Tropical page explains why, and the short version is that the two zodiacs sit about 24 degrees apart. In Jyotish the Moon sign, the rashi, carries more weight than the Sun sign, so I start there.

Your sidereal Moon in Aries

Your feelings arrive fast and leave fast. When something touches you, you know it at once and you know it with force. You do not brood your way towards a reaction. You react, and then you find out what you thought.

The gift in that is clarity. People know where they stand with you, and so do you. The cost is that the reaction sometimes runs ahead of the thought that would have softened it, and you are left apologising for words that were out of your mouth before you had checked them.

What you need, emotionally, is room to move. When life lets you act on a feeling, to respond, to start, to push forward, you feel well. When life asks you to sit still with a feeling and wait, you feel penned in, and penned in turns into restless and then into irritable. I have watched Aries Moons pick a fight with a quiet afternoon simply because nothing was happening.

You are emotionally brave. You will feel what other people avoid feeling. A confrontation that would frighten a water Moon is often fine by you. Naming what is wrong, saying the thing that needs saying, showing anger when anger is fair, these come more naturally to you than to most of the zodiac.

Your mind burns through experience quickly. Something happens, you process it, you move on, and you rarely go back to pick over old ground. That is a blessing when it lets you shed what should be shed. It is a loss when the thing needed more time than you gave it, and you only find that out later.

You learn by doing. Being told bores you. Trying something wakes you up, and the trying is how your understanding grows. Your nervous system runs hot, so stimulation feeds you right up to the point where it starts to fray you, and finding that line is work for a whole life.

Three things keep an Aries Moon well. Space for independent action, because smothering relationships, controlling households and heavily structured jobs all rub against this rashi. A physical outlet, because fire does not settle without discharge, and a sedentary Aries Moon is a moody one. And permission to say what you feel when it is fair to say it, because a dammed Aries Moon turns explosive while a flowing one stays clean.

In relationship you are refreshing. There are no games with you and no long silences that have to be decoded. You want a partner who can take your directness and give it back, who respects your need for your own space, and who does not mistake your speed for a lack of depth. The work on your side is the pause. One breath between the feeling and the words saves a great deal of repair later.

At work you are the one who moves when everyone else is still discussing it. You are useful in a crisis and sometimes wasted in a steady job that does not need mobilising. Learn to be patient with slower feelers, at home and at work. What looks like wallowing to you is often just a different pace, and rushing people through their own processing rarely ends well for anyone.

Your sidereal Sun in Aries

The sidereal Sun is read in Jyotish as the fire at the core of a life, the purpose underneath the personality. In Aries that core sits at the starting gate.

You are built to begin. Plenty of sidereal Aries Suns start businesses or movements, and at the level of purpose you are here to bring new things into being, whatever shape they take. The lives that leave you dissatisfied are the ones where you are maintaining rather than making.

You know who you are through what you do. Deferring, waiting for permission, sitting on your hands, these make you feel unreal. Taking action makes you feel alive, and whether the action was exactly right matters less at this level than the fact that you moved. The corrections come through the moving.

People find you direct. You say what you think and you do what you said. There is very little performance in you, and what people see is what they get, which some find bracing and others find abrasive. Working out when to bring the full fire and when a quieter warmth will do is a discipline that takes years.

Your path includes being publicly wrong. The Aries Sun who has never acted boldly and been mistaken has not yet lived into the design. The lesson is the quick admission of error, which the proud version of this Sun finds hard. Admitting the mistake fast is part of bold action, and the mature Aries has learned that.

And you are here to give other people permission. Your willingness to move shows the hesitant ones around you that bold action is a real option. That is one of the main ways this Sun serves the people around it. The restlessness is the thing to watch, the habit of starting and never staying long enough for the slow returns, because this Sun needs both the fire of beginning and the patience of remaining.

Mars and the nakshatras of Aries

Mars is Mangala in Jyotish, a malefic in the classical sense, which means hard working. Mars gives this rashi its heat, its courage and its impatience in equal measure. The grahas have their own page, The Grahas, which explains how a planet's strength is judged.

Three nakshatras fall within sidereal Aries. Ashwini covers the first 13 degrees 20 minutes, Bharani the next, and the first quarter of Krittika sits in the last few degrees before Taurus. Each has its own page in The Nakshatras, and the nakshatra your Moon occupies is the detail I read first in every portrait, so if your Moon is in Aries, find out which of the three it sits in.

Across the traditions

The Western Aries page in The Signs is the pair of this one. The Western sign is measured from the equinox and describes the season, the sidereal sign is measured from the stars, and the two answer different questions. Most people with a sidereal Aries Moon were told they had a Taurus Moon, and the Moon in the Signs page gives that Western reading. Neither is wrong. In my readings both sit side by side.

When did you last wait for permission you did not need?
