It is far simpler than the books make it sound. It takes a little practice and a different way of using your eyes, and that is about all.

What you are looking at

You are a spirit being living in a physical body. When your spirit attaches to the body it acts like the globe in a lamp. It lights the body up from the inside.

The glow you see around a person is that light. It is your aura, although what you see is a human filtered view of it, the part of it your physical eyes can pick up.

Pregnant women are often called glowing. Any wonder, when they have their own inner light combined with the inner light of the baby.

So when you learn to see an aura you are learning to see, a little, the spirit in the person in front of you.

How to look

You need to train your vision to look at something and, at the same time, stare into the distance.

Here is the method.

  1. Find someone willing to sit for you.
  2. Put all your light sources behind you, so the light falls on them and none of it shines into your eyes.
  3. Look just over their shoulder, not at their face.
  4. Let your eyes go into the thousand mile blank stare. The look you get when you are daydreaming and staring at nothing in particular.
  5. Hold that soft stare and wait.

With practice you will start to see a ghosting image around the person. Then colour starts to creep into it.

You will recognise the colours. Blue, green, yellow, whatever comes. But they will be shades of those colours you have never seen before.

Practising the look

The hardest part is the looking, and you can practise that without a person at all.

The best way I know is Magic Eye stereograms, the pictures that look like a mess of pattern until your eyes relax in exactly the right way and a hidden image floats up out of them. The way your eyes have to work to see a Magic Eye picture is very close to the way they need to work to see an aura.

If you cannot see the hidden image yet, keep playing with them. It is a lot more fun than staring at a wall.

The energy ball test

Once you have the look, combine it with the energy ball from the Body Energy page.

Do this in a subdued light, with your light source out of your line of sight, ideally behind you. Make your energy ball between your hands, the way that page describes. Then use your new way of looking on the space between your palms.

Look at the ball rather than at your hands. Soft stare, thousand miles away.

What do you see? Whatever it is, take note of it. That is your own energy, and you are looking at it with the same eyes you will use on a person. It is a good way to practise on your own, because the ball is always there when you want it.

Your own colour

Most people have a predominant aura colour, and there is an easy way to get an idea of yours before you ever see it.

Your aura colour influences the colours you find appealing. My own preferences have always been blues and greens, and my predominant aura colour is an aqua green. That is not a coincidence.

So look at your wardrobe. What is the dominant colour in there? When you shop, what colours do you reach for without thinking? That will give you a fair idea of your own aura colour, and it is a nice thing to check against what you see once your eyes have learned the look.

The colours you wear and eat also feed your energy, and there is more on that in the Memory Energy page.

The corner of your eye

There is a second way of seeing that sits right beside this one, and it is worth knowing about.

Your centre vision has a narrower light frequency range than your peripheral vision. The edges of your sight pick up more than the middle does. That is why you sometimes catch something out of the corner of your eye, turn to get a better look, and find nothing there. Turning brought it into your centre vision, and your centre vision cannot see it.

The soft stare and the edges of your vision go together. The same discipline of not turning to look is what lets people see spirit, and the Seeing Spirit page covers that in full. Putting the two together can open up a whole new world of discovery.

What gets in the way

Trying too hard. The moment you sharpen your focus to get a better look, you have dropped the blank stare. Let your eyes stay lazy.

Bad light. A lamp in your eyes or a bright window behind the person will drown out everything else. Light behind you, always.

Expecting a rainbow on the first night. It starts as a ghost and the colour comes later.

Monkey Mind. The voice that says you are imagining it. The way to deal with that is in the Monkey Mind page, and it works for seeing just as well as it works for feeling.

Where this leads

When you do see the glow, remember what it is. You are seeing a little of the spirit in that person.

Practise the look. Let the colour come to you.
