Energy Work
Memory Energy
You are an energy magnet.
The energy you put out controls the energy you receive. If you have ever fallen in love, you know this already. For a few weeks everything goes right. The lights are green, the right people ring, the boss is in a good mood, and you float through days that would normally flatten you. And you know the opposite too. Lose the job you loved and watch the next fortnight go wrong in ways that have nothing whatever to do with the job. The car plays up. The friend cancels. The letter you were waiting for brings bad news.
None of that is luck. It is the energy you are radiating, drawing its own kind back to you. We attract what we are putting out, and most people are putting out whatever the last thing that happened to them left behind.
The good news is that you can raise it on purpose, and the raw material is already inside you. It is memory.
Why memory works
A remembered feeling is a real feeling.
Your body does not know the difference between the love you felt in 1994 and the love you are feeling now. When you sit with a memory properly, not the facts of it but the feeling of it, your body runs that energy through itself today, and the world outside responds to it today. You are choosing which of your real experiences to broadcast.
Most people do this backwards without realising. They replay the argument, the loss, the humiliation, again and again, and then wonder why more of the same keeps arriving. The method is the same. Only the choice of memory is different.
The exercise: one week
For one week, keep a journal of everything amazing that has ever happened to you.
I do not care whether it was this morning or forty years ago. The tricycle when you were three. The swing at your grandparents' place. A particular birthday party. The first time somebody said they loved you and meant it. A sunrise you happened to be awake for. A dog. The day a stranger was kind to you for no reason.
Write each one down in as much detail as you can. Where you were, who was there, what you could see and smell. And most importantly, write down how it felt at the time, and stay in that feeling for a moment before you move to the next one.
Read the journal when you first wake up, before anything else. Read it again as the last thing before sleep. Add to it during the day whenever another memory surfaces, and whenever something new happens that puts a smile on your face, however small.
By the end of the week you will notice more good things happening, and I mean that literally. You have changed what you are radiating, so you have changed what you attract. Keep writing them down.
I gave this exercise to a group in the first months of Perth Spiritual Learning, in 2020, and the stories that came back the following week were some of the best I have ever had. People who had not laughed in months were laughing. That is what a week of this does.
The way back when you are lost
This is also the road home when you cannot find yourself.
Nearly every student I have ever had arrived carrying some version of feeling lost. A lack of direction, a sense of not belonging, of not knowing what they want. Those feelings come from losing touch with who you actually are, and once that goes, what you want in life goes with it.
The way back is the same journal. Find the times you were happy. Then go one layer down and find the feeling underneath each one. Was it freedom? Was it being loved? Was it being completely absorbed in something? Was it belonging? Those feelings are you. They are what you are here to have more of. Bring them forward into now, deliberately, every day, and the direction you thought you had lost starts pointing itself out.
Other things that raise it fast
Colour. The colours you wear and the colours you eat go into you as energy. Look at your wardrobe and notice what dominates it. Next time you shop, try on something in a colour you never wear and notice how you react, in your body, before your head has an opinion. My own preference has always been blues and greens, which matches the aqua green in my aura, and that is not a coincidence. And eat your greens, because that old saying has more behind it than your mother knew. Natural colour in food carries energy, and a plate of beige does not.
Hugs. A hug from anyone, including a stranger, including an animal, lifts the energy of both people, and a hug when someone is low can turn their whole day. How often do you give them? How often do you get them? Increase both.
Laughter. Humour is vital to your energy growth. If you cannot laugh at yourself on this path you will find it very heavy going, and the people who last longest at this are the ones who take the work seriously and themselves lightly. Even a forced smile changes something. Try one now.
Kindness. Doing something for someone with nothing in it for you raises your energy more reliably than anything else I know. There is a whole exercise on that in the projecting energy page.
The mistakes people make
Writing the facts and skipping the feeling. "Went to Rottnest in 1988" does nothing. "The first morning at Rottnest, the water so clear I could see my feet, and the feeling that nothing could touch me" does everything. The feeling is the fuel.
Stopping after the week. The week is the proof. The practice is for life.
Only reaching for it when you are flat. Read the journal on good days too, so that raising your energy becomes something you do rather than something you do in emergencies.
Comparing your memories to other people's. A small quiet memory that lights you up is worth more than a grand one that leaves you cold.
The daily version
Once the week is done, keep the journal going, and keep it somewhere you can reach. Read it when you are flat. Add to it when you are not. Your best memories are a battery you carry with you everywhere, and most people never once think to plug into it.
