By the time I was in my early twenties I was already teaching groups everything from psychic development and meditation to psychometry, mediumship and healing. It is the ability to sense the energies associated with an object.

The story in the ring

Say you have your grandmother's ring. You hold it, you settle, and by holding it you are able to tune into her life.

That works whether she is still alive or has passed over.

The ring has been close to her for years. It has been on her hand through everything she lived. When you hold it, your inner self connects with the information stream that goes with that object, and her story starts to come through to you.

Objects take on energy. I know this from the other direction as well. I cannot wear a watch. It will simply stop after a while, and start working again when I take it off. A lot of people with abilities find something similar, things that stop working or act differently around them. I know some people who make computers go weird. If your energy can stop a watch, it should not surprise you that a ring worn for years has picked up something of the person who wore it.

The flower reading

A very common form of psychometry is the flower reading.

Someone picks a flower and holds on to it for a period of time. Then they hand the flower to the reader, and the reader reads from it.

The flower has been in their hands and has taken on something of them in that time.

Photos

The same thing works with a photograph.

Clairsentience, the ability to sense the vibe in a room, can be developed to the point where you can know a person's mood from a photo. That holds whether the person in it is still living or is in spirit. A photo held in your hands and read this way is psychometry and clairsentience working together.

How it comes through

When you hold an object, what comes is impressions. A feeling. A sound. A smell. A picture in your mind's eye. The Clairs page describes each of them.

The rules I give for reading people apply here as well.

Be the third person observer of yourself. Have no preconceived ideas. Allow impressions.

Never try to interpret. Go with the flow and take in the sense of things you get.

Sometimes an impression will flash up someone from your own past. That is showing you that the person connected to the object has a character very much like that person from your past.

Sometimes it will be an experience from your own life that flashes up. That is a reference too.

When you share it, be true to the feelings that came with it.

Monkey Mind and the object

Monkey Mind will want to join in, and your head will try to read the object instead of the energy in it.

The person who handed you the object can often tell you whether what you got was right. That gives you the follow through to outcome that the Monkey Mind page asks for.

Note the sensation that came with each impression. Keep the ones that were confirmed. Learn the feel of the ones that were your own head.

Asking first

When I talk about practising on people, I say it plainly. It is important to have permission.

The same applies to someone's grandmother's ring. It is their family's story you are reading, so ask first.

Grounding afterwards

Any reading brings you into contact with energy that is not your own, and psychometry is no different. If you do not ground regularly you can build up energies from everything you have connected with, and that tends to show up as erratic things happening in your life.

So ground afterwards. Stand in the shower and let the water run it off you. Walk barefoot on the grass. The Grounding page has the methods, and any of them will do.

Where it leads

Psychometry is a wonderful tool to help you develop your abilities. It gives your inner self something to hold on to while you learn how the information feels when it comes.

With time you will realise you do not need the object at all. You can get the same information without it, and in fact you can get more.

The ring, the flower and the photo are training wheels. They show you that you can do this, and once you know you can, you stop needing them.

I went the same way with tools in general. In my early twenties I was an avid user of tarot. It did not take me long to see its limits, and I moved to using no divination tools at all. Just my sense of things.

What a gift is

In very simple terms, a gift is receiving information or energy from a source not available to the people around you. The source of that information is what defines the gift, and we then label it with a name like medium, psychic, healer or clairvoyant. Psychometry is the name for the times that information comes to you through an object.

Whatever the name, you are not learning something new. You are unblocking the memory of something you already know, and the practice only triggers that memory to surface.
