Shatabhisha
Shatabhisha is the twenty fourth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Jyotish, the astrology of India. It runs from 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of sidereal Aquarius, the zodiac measured against the fixed stars rather than the seasons, and its ruler is Rahu, the north node of the Moon.
The name means the hundred healers, or a hundred physicians. If your Moon was here when you were born, you were the odd one early and you are the odd one still, and I would like to say plainly that this is the best thing about you.
The deity and the symbol
Shatabhisha's deity is Varuna, lord of the deep waters and of hidden knowledge, the one who sees what is under the surface and keeps it. Its symbol is an empty circle, or a hundred stars.
The empty circle is the one to sit with. It is a boundary with nothing inside it, a space held open, a question that has not been forced shut. Most people cannot bear an open question for long. You can live in one for years, and that is where your discoveries come from.
The core signature
You are not standard issue. Your interests, the way you approach a problem, your sense of what matters, all of it runs off at an angle from the people around you. You noticed this as a child. It has cost you at times, and it is also the whole of your gift.
You work things out for yourself. You do not swallow received wisdom because it was received. You test it, from first principles if you have to, and you are not much bothered whether the answer you reach is the fashionable one.
You are drawn to healing, and usually the unconventional kind. Energy work, alternative medicine, psychic research, astrology itself. The fields the mainstream calls fringe are where your curiosity goes, and in my experience you find real knowledge there, mixed in with the nonsense, and you are better than most at telling which is which.
The emotional life
Your feelings are private. People find you hard to read, and the ones closest to you may say, fondly or otherwise, that you are a bit of a mystery. That is containment. Varuna keeps the deep water deep.
You can be alone for a long time without suffering for it. The solitude that would flatten a more social placement is, for you, the condition under which your best thinking happens. You need it, and you should stop apologising for that.
You have breakthroughs. Insights, healings, understandings that seem to arrive from nowhere, fully formed. They do not come from nowhere. They are the harvest of long research you were doing underwater, where nobody could see it, sometimes including you.
Strengths
Your first gift is healing or discovery that works outside the ordinary channels. What you find, what you mend, tends to come from the edges, and the edges are often where the answer was.
Your second gift is being at ease with mystery. You do not demand that a question be closed before its time. You can hold the unknown without panic, and that holding lets in a kind of wisdom that minds in a hurry for an answer never reach.
Your third gift is depth in solitude. Many of the things that mattered were found by people who could sustain long, lonely investigation, and you are built for exactly that.
Challenges
The first challenge is isolation that stops being a choice. The capacity for solitude can tip over into an inability to connect at all, and that is a loss, however well you dress it up as independence. Keep one or two doors open even when you do not feel like walking through them.
A second is secrecy that has become automatic. Hiding things for a good reason is one thing. Hiding them because hiding is simply what you do is another, and over time it shades into something closer to deceit. Check now and then why a given thing is hidden.
A third is fringe for its own sake. Not every unconventional idea is right. Some are simply wrong and unusual at the same time. Your discernment is good. Use it on the ideas you like as hard as on the ones you do not.
In love and work
In love you need a partner who can live with a locked room or two and not take it personally. You give slowly and you give deep, and the people who wait for it are rewarded. The work is letting someone see the water. You do not have to show them all of it. Show them some.
In work you need unscheduled time. Space to read, study, test and wander, without having to justify the hours to anyone. A life that books every minute of your day will wear your Shatabhisha nature to the bone. Research, healing, investigation, any field with a frontier in it suits you. And find water, the literal kind as well as the reflective kind. Varuna's people do their best thinking near the sea.
Rahu's influence
Rahu is the north node of the Moon, a shadow planet, counted among the malefics, which in Jyotish means hard working. Rahu carries hunger, obsession and the pull towards what is foreign, new and not yet understood. He is the appetite that will not be satisfied by the usual meal.
Under Rahu, Shatabhisha's research has an edge of compulsion to it. You cannot leave the unknown alone. That is the engine of your discoveries and it is also the thing to watch, because Rahu will happily chase a shadow as far as a substance. Keep your feet on the ground while your head is in the deep.
Across the traditions
Shatabhisha lies entirely in sidereal Aquarius, so the Vedic chart reads this Moon through Aquarius's independence and its reach for what is not yet known. In your Western chart the same Moon sits about 24 degrees further along, which places it in Pisces. The Moon in the Signs page covers that Western reading, and the two speak to each other well. The Western Pisces Moon tells you how permeable you are to everything around you. The nakshatra tells you what you are doing with what comes in, which is working it out alone.
What question have you been quietly living inside for years, and what would happen if you let someone in on it?
If you would like your own chart read, my readings are here.
