The name means the listener. If your Moon was here when you were born, you are the one people tell things to. You probably did not apply for the job.

The deity and the symbol

Shravana's deity is Vishnu, the preserver, who keeps the order of the world going by never taking his attention off it. Its symbol is an ear, or three footprints, for the three strides Vishnu took to measure out the worlds.

I like that the symbol is an ear. Most of astrology is about what a person puts out. This nakshatra is about what a person takes in, and what they do with it afterwards. Preservation starts with paying attention.

The core signature

You hear what other people miss. The shift in someone's voice, the thing they did not say, the real meaning sitting under the words they chose. These reach you without effort, and I suspect you have no idea how unusual that is. You assume everyone hears it. They do not.

You are drawn to wisdom that has been handed down. Teachers, traditions, the books that have lasted. What was said before by people who knew matters to you in a way it does not matter to placements that only want to be original. You would rather receive something true than invent something new, and the world needs more of you than it has.

Whatever you end up doing for a living, the listening runs underneath it. Counsellor, teacher, translator, musician, broadcaster, or simply the friend everyone rings at eleven at night. The function is the same.

The emotional life

You understand feeling through hearing. Where other people read a room by looking, you read it by listening, and a conversation that others experience as ordinary chat lands on you as rich material. You come home from a dinner party knowing things about the guests that they do not know they told you.

You remember what you were told. Years on, you can recall a conversation in detail, the words and the tone and what it gave away. That is a gift and a weight. Some things are easier to carry when you cannot remember them exactly.

You are sensitive to noise. The same openness that lets you hear deeply leaves you raw in a loud room, and harsh sound can wear you down in ways the people around you simply do not share. That is the instrument you were given, and it is worth looking after.

Strengths

Your first gift is listening of a rare quality. People who confide in you feel heard in a way most listeners cannot manage, and being heard like that is itself a kind of healing. You may have been doing this for people your whole life without once calling it a skill.

Your second gift is preservation. You carry forward what you heard from teachers, from elders, from the family stories, and that carrying is how a culture stays itself. Vishnu's work, on a human scale.

Your third gift is passing it on. What you have taken in, you can give out again, clearly. Teachers, writers and counsellors with a Shravana Moon have an unusual ability to hand over to others exactly what they themselves received.

Challenges

The first challenge is gossip. Listening can turn into collecting other people's material and spending it as social currency. Being confided in is a privilege, and the privilege can be misused without anyone quite deciding to misuse it.

A second is passivity. Endless listening can stand in for living. Some Shravana Moons never properly enter their own life because they are always attending to someone else's, and they can tell themselves this is kindness. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is hiding.

A third is the loop. An ear that hears so well can also run obsessive circuits about an overheard fragment, or about what was said about you in the room you had just left. Not everything you hear is about you, and most of what you did not hear was not either.

In love and work

In love you are the partner who actually listens, which is rarer than it should be and valued accordingly. The risk is that you become the listener and nothing else, the one who receives and never asks. Say what you need. Out loud, in words, to the person who needs to hear it. You of all people know that things left unsaid do not go away.

In work you need content worth hearing and people worth listening to. Your attention is wasted on surface chatter and you feel the waste. You also need quiet. Constant interruption, open plan offices and media that never switches off will wear you thin. Protect the silence the way a musician protects their hands.

The Moon's influence

The Moon in Jyotish is Chandra, the mind, the feelings, the one who receives and reflects. A nakshatra ruled by the Moon with the Moon placed in it is receptivity on receptivity, and that is exactly what Shravana is.

Chandra is a benefic when waxing, and the Moon's gift here is the capacity to take in without being destroyed by what comes in. It also brings the Moon's changeability, which is why your emotional weather can shift with the room you are sitting in. Knowing that is half of managing it.

Across the traditions

Shravana lies entirely in sidereal Capricorn, so the Vedic chart reads this Moon through Capricorn's patience and structure. In your Western chart the same Moon sits about 24 degrees further along, which places it in Aquarius. The Moon in the Signs page covers that Western reading, and the two go well together. The Western Aquarius Moon tells you how you hold a certain distance in your feeling. The nakshatra tells you what you are doing across that distance, which is listening.

Who in your life has never once been properly heard, and what would it cost you to be the one who hears them?
