Capricorn in Vedic Astrology
Makara, the sea creature, a crocodile in most of the old pictures. The tenth rashi of the sidereal zodiac, ruled by Saturn, and the sign where Mars is exalted. Patience and drive in the one place. Nothing gets built without both.
This page pairs with the Capricorn page in the Western section. The two zodiacs sit about 24 degrees apart, so a good many people who read as an Aquarius Sun or Moon in the Western chart land here when the chart is cast sidereally. The Sidereal and Tropical page explains the one sign back rule. If the eccentric, rebellious Aquarius description never sounded like you, this page may be the one that does.
In Jyotish the Moon comes first, so that is where I start.
Your sidereal Moon in Capricorn
The rashi is the sidereal Moon sign, and in Vedic reading it is the deepest description of who you are. The Moon is the mind and the feeling life, the part of you that responds before thought has caught up.
A Capricorn Moon puts that feeling life in an earth sign ruled by Saturn. Your feelings are contained. You hold your inner life and work through it in private, and people often think you feel less than you do. You feel every bit as much. You simply process it through discipline. Very often this Moon comes with early responsibility, a childhood where you were the steady one before you were old enough to choose it, and that shaped a grown up emotional temperament well ahead of time.
What you need is stability, work that matters and respect. The respect does not have to be loud, but its absence wears on you over years. Routine and predictable commitments are scaffolding for you. Chronic instability exhausts you more than hard work ever will.
You are loyal and steady. The people you love get your committed presence across decades, through the rough patches, without drama. I think this is the most underrated quality in the whole zodiac, and the people who have it rarely get thanked for it.
Your mind works through responsibility. What happened, what was my part, what do I need to do now. Those are your default questions, and they make you the person everyone wants in a crisis. They also hand you blame that was never yours. You process slowly. Big events take time to settle, closure comes slowly, and what settles slowly in you settles for good. You can carry emotional weight for a very long time, and the cost is that you often do not notice you are overloaded until you are well past the point where a sensible person would have put something down.
The gifts are the gifts of the dependable adult. People know you will be there and that your word holds. You rarely overreact, you see a situation as it is and respond in proportion. And you carry others through hard seasons. Families and communities lean on this Moon when things go wrong, and it holds.
The work is in three places. The first is shutting down. The containment that protects you can tip into a quiet shutdown where you lose touch with your own feelings and with the people who love you. Watching for that is real self care.
The second is saying it. Years of not naming what you feel damages relationships that would have thrived on a little more openness. The people who deserve to hear it need to hear it from you, in words.
The third is severity, toward yourself first and then toward others. High standards can turn harsh, so that your own feelings get judged as weakness and other people's as self indulgence. Compassion is the counterweight, and you are allowed to apply it to yourself.
You also need permission to rest, planned recovery rather than collapse. In love you want someone who sees past the reserve and stays. At work you are the long game player, the one still standing when the enthusiasts have gone home. Fire elsewhere in the chart adds warmth and expression, water adds feeling, air adds words. The Saturn earth core holds.
Your sidereal Sun in Capricorn
The Sun in Jyotish is the soul and the sense of self, a step behind the Moon in Vedic reading but still the spine of the chart. A sidereal Sun in Capricorn says you came here to build and to hold. You accept responsibility, you make things that last, and you take adult weight on your shoulders without complaint. A life of leisure without serious purpose leaves this Sun unfulfilled however comfortable it looks from outside.
You know who you are through what you have built, led or earned. People experience you as mature, often from childhood. You carry weight well and you are the one asked to handle what others cannot. You think in long arcs, how today's decision compounds over ten years, what structure is worth building for the time you actually have, and that strategic patience is rarer than it should be. You are reserved, and your outer face is more professional than personal, which protects you and also keeps out people who would have loved the whole of you.
Your path is the long build. Careers that span decades, institutions left stronger, families raised, bodies of work that compound. The Saturn road often begins hard, with strict parents or early struggle, and ends, if walked with awareness, in earned authority. The difficulty is part of the lesson. And many Capricorn Suns arrive at middle age with a great deal built and a thin personal life, and the later curriculum is learning to receive the rest, pleasure and closeness the earlier decades postponed.
The shadow is work that eats the life it was meant to support, coldness that becomes a wall, and self worth tied so tightly to achievement that when the achieving pauses, through illness or retirement or failure, the self seems to go with it. The grown up version has built a self that outlasts the CV.
Fire elsewhere in the chart adds warmth and initiative, water adds feeling, air adds range. The Saturn core holds.
The ruling graha and the nakshatras
Saturn, Shani in Sanskrit, rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn is the great malefic of Jyotish, and I want to be plain about what that word means. Malefic means hard working. Shani is the graha of time, discipline, limits and the lessons that cannot be rushed, and in Capricorn it is at home. Mars is exalted here, which gives the sign its drive. Saturn supplies the patience, Mars supplies the push, and the mountain gets climbed.
Three nakshatras fall across sidereal Capricorn. The last part of Uttara Ashadha, ruled by the Sun, runs from 0 to 10 degrees and begins in Sagittarius. Shravana, ruled by the Moon, runs from 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes. The first part of Dhanishta, ruled by Mars, runs from 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees and finishes in Aquarius. Each has its own page in The Nakshatras, and I read the Moon's nakshatra before I read its sign, so if you know your sidereal Moon's degree, start there.
Across the traditions
The Western Capricorn page describes the tropical sign, and the Moon in the Signs page gives the Western Moon in Capricorn. They are the pair of this page. The two zodiacs answer different questions, and I give both in every full portrait rather than asking you to choose between them.
Who has been waiting years to hear how you feel, and what would it cost you to tell them this week?
