Pushya
The one who feeds everybody. The quiet person in the corner of the kitchen making sure there is enough, and there always is.
Pushya is the eighth of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Cancer, sitting wholly inside the sign, and it is ruled by Saturn. The old texts call it the flower, and many of them simply call it the best, the most fortunate of all the lunar mansions.
The deity and the symbol
Pushya belongs to Brihaspati, the priest and teacher of the gods, who is Jupiter in his wisest form. Its symbol is the udder of a cow, which is nourishment in its plainest picture, or a lotus, or a circle of flowers. The word itself means to nourish, to make something flourish by feeding it.
Saturn as ruler is the surprise here, and it is a good one. Saturn gives the nurturing a patient, enduring quality. Pushya does not feed you once and move on. It feeds you for forty years.
The core signature
Your Moon nourishes. You feed people in every sense there is, with meals, with attention, with knowledge, with steadiness. Wherever you go, you quietly make sure the people in your care have what they need, and most of them would name that as the first thing they know about you.
Your temperament puts lunar tenderness and Saturn's reliability in the same person. Warm but dependable. Feeling but grounded. Caring without being swamped by the caring. That combination is rare and people trust it on sight.
You are a teacher whether or not you have ever stood in front of a class. Brihaspati's people explain, guide, mentor and model. The function runs through the whole life, and it is usually done more by example than by lecture.
The emotional life
Your feelings are deep and they are steady. You do not swing wildly. Through storms that scatter other people you hold your ground, and that consistency is what makes you such a reliable partner and parent.
You are protective. Family, chosen family, close colleagues, anyone under your wing gets your watchful provision, and you tend to see what they need before they have worked it out themselves.
You carry a spiritual or philosophical thread through ordinary days. Even peeling vegetables, some part of you is oriented towards what it all means, and it gives your presence a depth that the brighter, busier placements cannot match.
Strengths
Your first strength is care that does not run out. Students, patients, children, clients and friends get looked after across years. That kind of durable giving is uncommon and it changes lives.
Your second is teaching by presence. People become better in your company without being told how. Your example carries what you know.
Your third is the atmospheres you make. Homes, teams and communities you belong to take on a quality of steady nourishment that lets the people inside them grow.
Challenges
The shadow is giving until there is no one left at home. The Pushya capacity to nourish can run entirely at your own expense, and the imbalance drains you slowly enough that you do not notice until you are empty. Learning to receive, and to let people feed you back, is the central work of this nakshatra, and in my experience it is the one its people resist hardest.
The second challenge is needing to be needed. If your sense of who you are becomes bound up with being the carer, you can keep people dependent, without meaning to, when the kinder thing is to let them grow out of needing you.
The third is caution wearing the costume of wisdom. Saturn's patience can quietly turn into an avoidance of every risk, and a Pushya life can end up smaller than it might have been because the adventures were always sensibly postponed.
In love and work
In love you want stability and real warmth, both at once. Your Saturn side needs a structure it can count on and your lunar side needs tenderness inside that structure, and a partner who offers only one of the two will leave you half fed. Given both, you are among the most loyal and sustaining companions in the zodiac. Your lesson is to be looked after sometimes, and to let that be allowed.
At work you need someone or something to care for. Teaching, nursing, counselling, cooking, management of the kind that grows people, running a household, running a practice. Lives with no recipient for the care leave the design idle. You also need to keep learning, through study and contemplation, because without it you can feel stale in the middle of outward success.
The ruler's influence
Saturn rules Pushya, and Saturn is the planet of time, duty and endurance. The classical texts call it a malefic, and I would rather call it hard working, because here it is what turns a soft nurturing instinct into a lifelong practice. Saturn is why Pushya care lasts. Anyone born with the Moon here starts the Vimshottari dasha in a Saturn period of nineteen years, the longest first chapter after Venus, and The Dashas page explains how that shapes an early life.
Across the traditions
Pushya sits wholly in sidereal Cancer, so the Cancer in Vedic Astrology page on The Rashis is its home. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which puts most of this stretch of sky in Western Leo, with the first few degrees still in Western Cancer. So most Pushya Moons have a Western Moon in Leo, and the Leo generosity and the Pushya provision are the same instinct seen from two directions. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western reading.
