Punarvasu is the seventh of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 20 degrees of sidereal Gemini to 3 degrees 20 minutes of sidereal Cancer, crossing from one sign into the next, and it is ruled by Jupiter. The name means good again, or the return of the light.

The deity and the symbol

Punarvasu belongs to Aditi, the goddess of boundless space and the mother of the gods. Its symbol is a quiver of arrows, which is a picture of reserves. The arrow is shot, and then it is recovered and ready to be used again. Nothing is spent for good.

Jupiter as ruler adds faith and breadth. Where Ardra, the nakshatra before this one, is the storm, Punarvasu is the morning after, when the light returns and the ground is still wet and everything is somehow all right.

The core signature

Your Moon restores. Things come back when you are around. Friendships that had lapsed, projects that had died, chances that seemed to have passed. You are hard to stop, because Punarvasu gives you the capacity to start again, and again, and again.

Your temperament is hopeful in a grounded way. You see the bigger frame, the one in which a difficulty is weather passing through rather than the final word on anything. Jupiter gives the faith and Aditi gives the sky it sits in.

You are drawn to meaning. Teaching, the wisdom traditions, the big questions. Your mind wants to know what things are for, and working that out is part of how you process your feelings.

The emotional life

Your feelings have room in them. You do not get stuck in the small rooms of emotion where some placements spend years. Even in a hard patch, some part of you remembers that this is not the whole of what is real.

You recover. A setback that would stop other people holds you for a while and then you try another road. That capacity to keep faith after disappointment is tested and real, and it is the thing people around you come to lean on.

You are kind by default. Aditi's people assume the best of others, extend the benefit of the doubt and offer what they have. It is in the grain of the nakshatra.

Strengths

Your first strength is durable hope. The kind that has been through things and is still standing. For people who have lost theirs, that is medicine.

Your second is bringing things back. Repaired relationships, revived opportunities, projects given a second life. You are the person who makes dead ground green again.

Your third is wise counsel. The philosophical bent and the natural decency together make you the one people come to for perspective, and your advice tends to be both practical and anchored in something larger.

Challenges

The shadow is complacency. The same faith that holds you up can slide into assuming things will work out without the effort that actually makes them work out. Faith without the legwork is the characteristic Punarvasu failure.

The second challenge is trusting people who did not deserve it. The benevolent assumption is a gift, and there are people who will happily take advantage of it. The mature Punarvasu has grown some discernment to sit beside the kindness, without letting the discernment harden into suspicion.

The third is restlessness. The ability to begin again can become a habit of never staying long enough to collect the deep rewards of one thing done for a long time.

In love and work

In love you are warm, forgiving and easy to live with, and you need a partner whose values match yours. Decency is your baseline and you function best where it is the baseline for both of you. Your lesson in love is to stay through the dull stretch instead of refreshing the relationship by leaving it, because the second chance you give yourself can be given inside the same marriage.

At work you need to keep learning. A role with no intellectual or spiritual growth in it will underfeed you no matter how well it pays. Teaching, counselling, ministry, publishing, any field where perspective and the long view are the product, suits you. You also need the freedom to renew yourself through travel, study or a fresh project every so often, and a rigid employer who wants you identical from one decade to the next will lose you.

The ruler's influence

Jupiter rules Punarvasu, and Jupiter is the planet of faith, growth and the teacher. It is the classical great benefic, and it gives this nakshatra its generosity, its optimism and its taste for wisdom. Anyone born with the Moon here starts the Vimshottari dasha in a Jupiter period of sixteen years, a fortunate beginning by most reckonings, and The Dashas page explains how the periods run.

Across the traditions

Punarvasu straddles sidereal Gemini and sidereal Cancer, so both the Gemini in Vedic Astrology and Cancer in Vedic Astrology pages on The Rashis apply, depending on which side of the boundary your Moon fell. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which puts this stretch of sky in the second half of Western Cancer, so most Punarvasu Moons have a Western Moon in Cancer. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western reading, and the Cancer instinct for home and return sits very comfortably beside this nakshatra.
