Mrigashira is the fifth of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 23 degrees 20 minutes of sidereal Taurus to 6 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Gemini, crossing from one sign into the next, and it is ruled by Mars.

The deity and the symbol

Mrigashira belongs to Soma, the god of the Moon's nectar, of inspiration and of the search for what cannot quite be named. Its symbol is the head of a deer, the gentle, alert animal that is always listening and always moving. The word itself means the deer's head.

Soft surface, Mars underneath. That is the whole nakshatra in four words. The deer is not a predator, but it is not a passive creature either. It knows where it is going.

The core signature

Your Moon is a seeker's Moon. You are looking for something. The particular thing changes over a lifetime, a person, a place, an idea, a tone of experience, a piece of truth, but the looking itself never stops. It is the pattern underneath your life.

Your temperament is gentle but driven. People underestimate you because the manner is soft and the direction is hidden. Then they look up and you have arrived somewhere they did not know you were heading.

You are curious about nearly everything. Books, ideas, places, people. You want to taste them all and see what is around the next corner. I have noticed that this curiosity keeps Mrigashira people young in a way that has nothing to do with their age.

The emotional life

Your feelings swing between enchantment and let down. When you find what you were looking for, you are captivated. When it turns out to be less than you hoped, you move on. That is the seeker's cycle, and knowing it is a cycle takes some of the sting out of it.

You are sensitive to your surroundings. Rude tones, aggressive rooms and coarse conversation affect you more than they affect heavier placements. You need some refinement around you to feel well, and there is no shame in that.

You keep a private inner life. A good deal of what moves you, you never say out loud, even to the people closest to you. Much of your searching is done alone, in your own quiet.

Strengths

You keep looking. In a world that rewards people for settling into certainty, you keep asking. Your questions keep a conversation alive and your searches turn things up that nobody else was looking for.

You have taste. What you notice in art, in design, in writing and in people tends to be accurate and finely judged, and whatever you work on is better for it.

You have quiet determination. You accomplish more than you appear to, because the soft surface does not advertise the Mars underneath.

Challenges

The shadow is a dissatisfaction that never quite lifts. The person you married, the job you chose, the life you built can all start to seem insufficient for no better reason than that they are not the next mystery. That is a trick the seeking plays on you, and it is worth naming it when it starts.

The second challenge is shyness about committing. To commit is to stop looking, and looking is your native mode, so the search can quietly become a way of never choosing.

The third is escape. When the present gets demanding, the Mrigashira reflex is to head somewhere new. A mature version of this nakshatra has learned to stay in the room and deal with what is in it, and then go exploring afterwards.

In love and work

In love you need a partner who honours the search rather than one who demands you reach a final conclusion about everything. Someone who will come exploring with you some of the time and let you go alone the rest. Given that, you are a tender, perceptive and surprisingly steady companion, and the gentleness people see on the surface is real.

At work you need variety and some beauty in the surroundings. Fixed routine in an ugly office will suffocate you within a year. Research, writing, travel, design, teaching, anything that involves following a lead and finding something out, suits the nakshatra well. You get a great deal done, quietly, and your results tend to arrive before anyone noticed you were working on them.

The ruler's influence

Mars rules Mrigashira, which surprises people who meet the deer and expect something fiercer. Mars here is the drive under the gentleness, the reason the seeker does not drift. It gives direction, stamina and a capacity for sudden decisive action when the moment finally comes. Anyone born with the Moon here starts the Vimshottari dasha in a Mars period of seven years, and The Dashas page explains how that unfolds.

Across the traditions

Mrigashira straddles sidereal Taurus and sidereal Gemini, so both the Taurus in Vedic Astrology and Gemini in Vedic Astrology pages on The Rashis apply, depending on which side of the boundary your Moon fell. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which puts this stretch of sky almost entirely in Western Gemini, with the very end touching Western Cancer. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western reading, and the Gemini curiosity there will sound familiar.
