Cancer in Vedic Astrology
Karka is the Sanskrit name for Cancer, the crab, the fourth rashi of the sidereal zodiac. The Moon rules it in Jyotish as it does in the West, so a Cancer Moon is the Moon at home, working without another graha's filter. Jupiter is exalted here.
If your Western chart gave you a Leo Moon or a Leo Sun, the sidereal zodiac quite likely moves it back one sign into Cancer. The Sidereal and Tropical page explains the 24 degree gap. The Moon sign comes first in Jyotish, and for this rashi more than any other, because the Moon is reading itself.
Your sidereal Moon in Cancer
Your feelings go all the way down. When something touches you it does not stop at the surface, and emotion is how you know what is real. If it was felt, it happened.
What you need is belonging, safety and care that does not run out. You need to feel held, by family, by home, by tradition, by some source of love that is not going anywhere. When that is missing there is a particular ache that other Moons do not quite understand, and no amount of achievement fills it.
You are permeable. You walk into a room and pick up its weather. You feel what other people are feeling before they have said a word, and often before they know it themselves. You arrived with that sensitivity, and it is both the gift and the exposed nerve of this placement.
Your memory stores events with the feeling attached. Reach for the memory and the feeling comes back with it, which makes your recall vivid and also means an old wound can return with its original force if it has not been worked with. You move in cycles too. Some days you are open, some days you are closed, some weeks you are connected to everything and some weeks you need to withdraw. Honouring the cycle rather than demanding constant availability from yourself is a large part of growing into this Moon.
You dream a great deal, and your dreams carry weight. In my experience a Cancer Moon who keeps a dream notebook learns more about their own inner life in a year than most people learn in ten.
Three things keep this Moon well. A home that is a true refuge, with the textures and sounds and smells that feel right, because without it your nervous system never quite stands down. Family, of birth or of choice, people who know you properly and hold you through the hard patches, because pleasant surface friendships do not reach your depth. And privacy, protected time alone to process, because the openness that makes you available to everyone else has to be closed sometimes or it empties you.
The shadow is flooding, feeling so strong it swamps the ability to act. Learning to contain without suppressing is ongoing work. A second shadow is attachment that becomes clinging, where love of someone turns into fear of losing them and the fear bends the love out of shape. The mature Cancer Moon has learned that what you love has to be somewhat free. A third is moodiness that colours everyone around you, because your weather is strong and it spreads, and that can be unfair on people who were doing fine until you walked in.
In relationship you are loyal across decades and through phases that would scatter a lighter attachment. You want to be known, and you want to be held, and you are at your best with a partner who is steady, patient with the cycles and not frightened of depth. At work you are the one people confide in, the one who reads what a team is really struggling with, and you do your best work where care is part of the job.
Your sidereal Sun in Cancer
The sidereal Sun is the purpose underneath the personality, and in Cancer that purpose is to care.
You are here to hold, protect and provide refuge. Many Cancer Suns are powerful parents, and the role runs deeper than parenting. It is the function of being the one in whose presence other people feel safe and seen. You know who you are through what you feel, whom you care for and where you belong, and a culture that punishes tenderness starves you no matter what else it offers.
People find you available. You notice when someone is struggling, often before they have named it, and you remember the small things. You are protective, and the people you love have your defence when they need it. You do not leave when things get hard. You stay and you carry.
Your path is building a real home, a house, a family, a team, a community, whatever shape it takes in your life. Your path also asks you to learn to receive. The early habit of giving to everyone while quietly going without is something this Sun is meant to outgrow. And your path runs through the past. Family history and inherited patterns matter to you more than to most, and your work often involves carrying forward what was good in a line and ending what needed to end.
The shadow is losing the boundary between yourself and the person you are caring for, until both of you are exhausted. A second is living inside the past rather than drawing on it. A third is moodiness that takes the household hostage, because your weather reaches everyone near you whether you mean it to or not. The mature Cancer Sun manages its own weather without asking everyone else to, and has learned that friends of thirty years and marriages of forty are how this Sun does most of its work.
The Moon and the nakshatras of Cancer
The Moon is Chandra in Jyotish, a benefic when waxing, the graha of mind, memory and the inner life, and the one graha the Vedic chart reads above all others. In Cancer the Moon rules its own sign, so the lunar qualities run undiluted. The Grahas page covers the Moon in full, and The Moon page in the Western section is worth reading beside it.
Three nakshatras fall within sidereal Cancer. The last quarter of Punarvasu opens the sign, Pushya takes the middle, and Ashlesha runs to the boundary with Leo. Each has its own page in The Nakshatras. If your Moon is in Cancer, find out which of the three it sits in, because that is the detail I read first.
Across the traditions
The Western Cancer page in The Signs is the pair of this one. The Western sign is counted from the solstice and the sidereal from the stars, and the two describe the same crab from different vantage points. Most people with a sidereal Cancer Moon were told they had a Leo Moon, and the Moon in the Signs page gives that Western reading. Both belong in the picture, and in my readings they sit side by side.
